Abstract
An 'N' type plug that is normally used to connect a lighting board on a trailer or the lights on a caravan to the towing vehicle, has been modified so as to test the wiring of the vehicles 'N' type socket. The wiring tester is inserted into the 'N' type socket and the vehicles lights are switched on and off in turn. Three light emitting diodes in the rear of the tester, a panel lamp on top of the tester and a buzzer inside the tester, light up and sound to show the correct operation or malfunction of the wiring upto the 'N' type socket. This tester is easily used and can save considerable time spent in locating faults or in confirming the correct installation of a newly fitted towbar electrics. Also, instead of the person of the towing vehicle having to remember pin allocation's and test each pin individually, they only have to refer to the wiring testers lighting and sounding sequence.
Description
WIRING ALLOCATION TESTER
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A WIRING ALLOCATION TESTER FOR VEHICLE
TOWBAR ELECTRICS AND IS MADE UP USING READILY AVAILABLE 'N'
TYPE PLUG AND OTHER ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS.
VEHICLES THAT ARE USED TO TOW TRAILERS, BOATS AND CARAVANS ARE
ALL FITTED WITH THE APPROPRIATE TOWING BRACKET AND THE
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS FOR SIDE LIGHTS, STOP LIGHTS, INDICATORS
AND FOG LIGHT ARE VIA AN 'N' TYPE SOCKET MOUNTED ON THE REAR OF
THE VEHICLES TOWING BRACKET.
THIS WIRING ALLOCATION TESTER IS A MODIFIED 'N' TYPE PLUG THAT
IS FITTED INTO THE 'N' TYPE SOCKET AND WHEN THE VEHICLES LIGHTS
ARE SWITCHED ON AND OFF IN TURN THE CORRECT OPERATION OR
MALFUNCTION OF THE CIRCUIT IS INDICATED BY THE LIGHT EMITTING
DIODES, BUZZER AND PANEL LAMP FITTED INTO THE WIRING TESTER.
WHEN A TRAILER, BOAT OR CARAVAN IS HOOKED-UP TO A VEHICLE THE
LIGHTS ARE SWITCHED ON AND OFF IN TURN TO CONFIRM THAT THE
LIGHTS ARE OPERATING CORRECTLY. IF THERE IS A MALFUNCTION IN
THE LIGHTING SYSTEM MOST PEOPLE THINK 'IS IT THE VEHICLES
WIRING AT FAULT OR WHAT'! THE WIRING ALLOCATION TESTER ALLOWS
THE VEHICLES 'N' TYPE SOCKET TO BE CHECKED TO CONFIRM IT'S
CORRECT OPERATION. THIS ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S DRIVER TO
CONCENTRATE THEIR EFFORTS TO LOCATE THE FAULT ON THE LIGHTING
BOARD OR REAR LIGHT'S.
THE WIRING ALLOCATION TESTER ALSO ALLOWS ANYONE INVOLVED IN THE
FITTING OF TOWING BRACKETS TO CONFIRM THE CORRECT ALLOCATION
AND OPERATION OF THE WIRING THAT THEY HAVE CARRIED OUT.
THE WIRING ALLOCATION TESTER HAS SEVEN PINS AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2. FOUR OF THESE PINS ARE ISOLATED FROM EACH OTHER WITH DIODES.
TWO OF THESE PINS GO TO TWO RED L.E.D'S AND FOUR PINS TO THE
GREEN L.E.D., BUZZER AND PANEL LAMP VIA THE DIODES. THE L.E.D'S
ARE EARTHED THROUGH TWO RESISTORS TO THE SEVENTH PIN. IT IS THE
WAY THAT THE L.E.D'S , DIODES AND RESISTORS ARE CONNECTED AS IN
FIGURE 4, THAT ALLOWS EACH CIRCUIT TO BE CHECKED WITHOUT
INTERFEARING WITH THE OTHER. THE BUZZER SOUNDS WITH THE FOG
LIGHT, INDICATORS AND STOP LIGHTS. THE PANEL LAMP LIGHTS UP
WITH THE GREEN L.E.D. BUT IS ONLY USED TO DRAW ENOUGH CURRENT
FOR THE TOWING VEHICLES AUDIBLE INDICATIOR RELAY TO SOUND.
