Abstract
A window unit in which the edge of the glazing unit 12 is recessed into an internal peripheral recess 18 in a PVC frame 10 comprising a main extrusion 20 and a glazing bar 22, and the glazing unit is sealed in place on both the interior and exterior sides by glazing gaskets 16,36, in the form of extruded strips, which are wholly accommodated within the recess 18 in the frame in which the glazing unit is located so that they do not protrude over the main extrusion 20 or glazing bar 22.
Description
Window Glazing
This invention relates generally to window glazing and in particular to the glazing of PVC window units.
According to the invention, there is provided a window having the glazing carried by a PVC frame having an interior peripheral recess in which the outer peripheral edge of the glazing unit is located, wherein the glazing unit is sealed in place by sealing gaskets in the form of extruded strips wholly accornrnodated within the recess in the PVC frarne in which the glazing unit is located,
Assuming the glazing unit is sealed in place by gaskets in both the interior and exterior sides of the unit, extruded sealing strips in accordance with the invention are used on both sides.
Conventionally, glazing units in PVC frames are sealed in place by gaskets, usually black in colour, which have a barbed rib engaged into longitudinal undercut slots in the side walls of the recess in which the glazing unit is located, one side wall typically being formed on a separately extruded glazing bar which locks to the principal frarne extrusion. On the side of the gasket opposite to the barbed rib, the gasket is extruded with a deformable lip and, above the first deformable lip, a wider second deformable lip connected to the main body of the extrusion, from which the barbed rib projects, by a flexible stem.
When the glazing unit and sealing gaskets are properly located in position, both deformable lips seal against the glass, the upper and wider lip being deformed to assume a steeply inclined position in which it projects inwardly over the glazing by about 0.75 cm from the inner periphery of the PVC frame.
Characteristically, therefore, in PVC windows, often having a white frame, a black border is apparent around the glazing. The present invention eliminates this black border, but without sacrificing the efficiency of the seal made between the glazing unit and the sealing gaskets.
This is achievable with a modified sealing gasket which is co-extruded with a foamed main body having an impervious skin from which a solid barbed rib projects on one side, whilst the other side is faced with a longitudinally ribbed wall. This gasket can be wholly contained within the recess in the frame in which the glazing unit is located, with the ribbed flat face in engagement with the glass. The foamed backing behind this ribbed face ensures that efficient sealing is obtained.
However, the use of this coextruded sealing gasket is not essential. Efficient sealing can be maintained with a modification of the conventional gasket hitherto described, wherein the upper lip and the stem which supports it are omitted, and the lower deformable lip is made wider.
The window glazing system in accordance with the invention is further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows part of a conventionally glazed window having a PVC frame;
Figure 2 shows part of a glazed PVC framed window in accordance with the
invention;
Figures 3 and 5 respectively show, in cross-section, the form of two possible
sealing gaskets for use in the arrangement of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a partial transverse cross-section through a PVC framed glazed
window showing the gasket of Figure 3 in use.
Referring first to Figure 1, a conventional window having a PVC frame 10 has the glazing unit 12 sealed and located in place, both on the interior and exterior sides, by sealing gaskets 14. The gaskets 14 project inwardly over the glazing from the inner periphery of the PVC frame 10.
ln contrast, Figure 2 shows a window in accordance with the invention, wherein the sealing gaskets are concealed. A clear view through the glazing unit 12 is obtained right up to the inner periphery of the PVC frame 10.
A preferred sealing gasket 16 by which this effect is obtained, without compromising the effectiveness of the seal against the glazing, is shown in Figure 3. Gaskets 16 are shown located in position in Figure 4.
Typically, the outer edge of the window unit 12 is located in a recess 18 in the
PVC frame 10, which frame comprises the assembly of a principal extrusion 20 with a glazing bar 22. The side walls of the recess are formed with undercut, longitudinal slots 24 for location of the sealing gaskets.
The sealing gasket 16 is a co-extruded rubber strip having a foamed main body 26 having an impervious skin 28. From one side of the foamed main body 26 projects a longitudinally extending, solid barbed rib 30. The opposite side of the main body has a flat wall 32 except for two longitudinally extending ribs 34.
When the window unit has been assembled, the barbed rib 30 of the sealing gasket is located in the undercut slot 24 in the recess in the frame 10. The foamed main body 26 of the gasket is substantially compressed, which ensures an efficient seal with the glazing at the longitudinally ribbed wall 32 of the gasket. The dimensions of the gasket 16, together with the positioning of the barbed rib on the gasket, are such that this efficient seal is obtained wholly within the recess 18 in the PVC window frame 10. No part of the gasket 16 projects over the glazing inside the inner periphery of the PVC frame 10.
However, use of the preferred gasket shown in Figure 3 is not essential. The same effect is obtainable, and an adequate seal with the glazing maintained, with the extruded, solid gasket 36 shown in Figure 5. This gasket again has a barbed rib 38 and, on the opposite side of the main body 40, an inclined, relatively wide lip 42 for prirnary sealing against the glazing unit. When the gasket is located in position, the lip 42 is deformed into a more steeply inclined position but, owing to the positioning of the barbed rib 38 relative to this lip 42, the lip does not project outside the recess 18 in the PVC frame 10.
