Abstract
When fitted to a childs bicycle, the unit 6. seeks to provide, when fitted to the rear bicycle frame 1. and driven by the rear wheel tyre 3. and by mechanical means seeks to imitate the sound of a motorbike engine.
Description
The present invention relates to a toy for a bicycle in the form of an attachement which makes the sound of an engine when the bicycle is moving.
Children often dream of having a motorbike when they reach a suitable age. The invention seeks to provide an attachment for fitment to a childs bicycle which makes the sound of an engine as the bicycle is moving to imitate a motorbike.
According to the present invention there is provided a toy for a bicycle comprising a mechanical noise generating unit for connection to and driven by a moving part of a bicycle.
Preferably the noise generating unit is mounted in a housing, and preferably linkage means connects a moving part of a bicycle to the housing. Preferably the noise generating unit includes a hammer which beats on a membrane, and preferably the hammer is driven by a rotating motion.
Preferably the linkage means is an arm rotated by rotation of a bicycle wheel, and preferably one end of said arm includes a drive wheel for engagement with a bicycle tyre.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of a bicycle rear wheel and part of a bicycle frame with the toy fitted thereon, and
Figure 2 shows a side view of the working parts of a noise generating unit.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown the rear half of a bicycle frame 1, a rear wheel 2 having a tyre 3. Wheel 2 is driven by the movement of chain 4 driving cog 5 connected by a ratchet to the wheel 2 as is known in the art.
A noise generating unit 6 is mounted by means of a bracket 7 to the frame 1. Linkage means in the form of an arm 8 has a drive wheel 9 at one end thereof. Drive wheel 9 may be made of rubber or other resilient material. Arm 8 is biased towards the wheel 2 by means of a spring 10 so that drive wheel is in contact with tyre 3. its tyre 3 rotates when the bicycle is moving forwards, so the arm 8 is rotated by the drive wheel 9. A ratchet device 11 may be provided to connect the arm 8 to wheel 9, so that the arm only rotates when the drive wheel is driven by the bicycle'travelling in a forward direction. Arm 8 may also incorporate a universal joint 12 to accommodate movements of tyre 3. Rotation of the arm 8 causes the noise generating unit to emit a noise of an engine as more fully described in Figure 2.
As shown in Figure 2, the arm 8 is connected to rotate a cog 13 on axis 13a, which in turn rotates a smaller cog 14 on axis 14a. A wheel 15, mounted on and rotated by axis 14a, supports a semicircular cam surface 16. A hammer 17 is pivoted about its centre 18. Hammer 17 has a spring 19 which biases the head 20 towards a stretched membrane 21 mounted over a circular frame 22 (similar to a tambourine). A rounded end 23 of hammer 17 remote from head 20, acts as a cam follower on the semicircular cam surface 16 as wheel 15 rotates. Thus as arm 8 is rotated by the wheel of the bicycle, so the hammer beats against the membrane 21. The faster to wheel rotates, the faster the frequency of the beats.
Membrane 21 is designed to produce a sound similar to that of a motorbike engine.
The invention may be made of any suitable material such metal, wood or plastics.
The noise generating unit may take a different form to that described, and may be driven by a moving part of a bicycle other than a wheel, e.g. the pedal, crank or the chain.
Further modifications of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
Claims (7)
1. A toy for lye with a bicycle, comprising a mechanical noise producing unit adapted to be mounted on a bicycle and operated by a moving part thereof.
