Abstract

A guide to enable a power tool such as a circular saw or router to cut or groove firm material such as wood in a straight line and at a specified angle to the horizontal, comprises a straight edge 1 a cross piece 2 which may be adjustable, as shown in Fig 1, and may have a tail stop 3. Fig 3 shows the guide in use.

Description

POWER TOOL GUIDE This invention relates to a power tool guide and particularly to a guide that will enable a power saw or router to cut in a straight line.
At present, to use a power tool to cut a straight line normally requires the use of a "straight edge", or for narrower cuts, a guide attached to the saw. The "straight edge" usually takes the form of a straight piece of wood. The line to be cut is marked and the "straight edge" suitably positioned and clamped to the material. It may also be clamped to a bench. Using a "straight edge" in this manner can be time consuming since first the line of cut must be determined and marked, and then the "straight edge" suitably attached.
Using a guide attached to the saw only allows for a narrow piece of material to be cut.
Another method uses a guide whereby the work is held in place by PUSHING THE GUIDE against the work and applying downward pressure on the guide.
The present invention is a power tool guide whereby the work is held fast by the hand pressing the guide down whilst at the same time the same hand is used to PUSH THE WORK against the guide.
The present invention is a guide to be used with a power saw or router and comprises an adjustable "T" piece 2 Fig 1, attached to a stock 1 Fig 1, and with an adjustable tail stop 3 Fig 1 The invention has been designed primarily for use in conjunction with a portable workbench but can also be used with any other suitable means of support.
Apart from where specified, all angles, fixed and variable, refer to the angle in the horizontal piane between the "T" piece 2 and the stock 1 as shown in Fig.1.
In its present design the invention is made primarily from "MEDIUM DENSITY FIBRE BOARD" (MDF) but may also be made from other material such as wood, plastic or metal. It may also be manufactured in different sizes.
The guide may be marked with graduations to measure length, and may also be marked with graduations to measure angles.
It may also be marked or have mechanical, electrical or electronic means to enable the "T" piece to be set to a required angle.
It may also be manufactured in such a way as to enable the saw to be used in the left hand and especially when cutting an angle as set by the routed section of the stock shown in Fig.2.
The "T" piece may be permanently secured to the stock at a specific angle and in any position along the length of the stock, or as in the case of this invention, secured at one end and in such a way as to allow the "T" piece to be rotated and/or moved laterally, then locked.
The adjustment of the distance between the tail stop and the "T" piece may be altered by inserting a peg through a hole, or as in this invention, by a sliding adjustment.
In use of the power tool guide according to the invention, the "T" piece is adjusted to the angle of cut and the distance d Fig.1 adjusted to the distance between the edge of the power tool foot and its cutting edge. The tail stop is adjusted so that the "T" piece and tail stock overhang the workbench as depicted in Fig.3. The material to be cut is then inserted under the guide as shown in Fig.3 and whilst holding the material firmly against the "T" piece the power tool is run along the guide to either cut or groove as required.

Claims (10)
