Abstract
The present invention relates to a device (2) for use in racket sports comprising means for attaching it to the handle (8) of a sports racket and a plurality of markings (6), each marking being indicative of a preferred positioning of a player's hand when holding the racket handle for a specified shot. The present invention also relates to a sports racket having marking means comprising a plurality of markings (6) on the racket handle (8).
Description
A DEVICE FOR USE IN RACKET SPORTS
The present invention relates to a device for use in racket sports. In particular, it relates to a device for use in tennis.
When playing racket sports, such as tennis, squash or badminton, it is important that a player grips the handle of the racket correctly. In tennis, for example, different grips are required when playing shots such as backhand and forehand. These grips are dependent upon the positioning of a player's hand on the racket handle.
The present invention seeks to facilitate the correct positioning of a player's hand when playing a racket sport.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for use in racket sports comprising means for attaching it to the handle of a sports racket and a plurality of markings, each marking being indicative of a preferred positioning of a player's hand when holding the racket handle for a specified shot.
Preferably, the device is shaped to generally correspond to the cross-sectional shape of the racket handle.
In one embodiment, the device comprises four rectangular panels arranged to form a general inverted-Ushape.
The device may be releasably attachable to the racket handle.
According to the present invention there is further provided a sports racket comprising marking means located on the racket handle for use in racket sports; the marking means comprising a plurality of markings, each marking being indicative of a preferred positioning of a player's hand when holding the racket handle for a specified shot.
The marking means may be integral with the racket handle, or may be the attachable device mentioned above.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective top view of a device according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the device;
Figure 3 shows the markings for a right-handed device;
Figure 4 shows the markings for a left-handed device;
Figure 5 shows the device attached to a racket handle;
Figure 6 shows right-handed markings on a sports-racket; and
Figure 7 is a side view of an alternative device according to the present invention.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, a device 2 for use in tennis comprises four rectangular panels 4 arranged to form a general inverted-U-shape when viewed from the side.
On the top of the device are a plurality of markings 6, which are shown more clearly in Figures 3 and 4.
As shown in Figure 5, the device 2 is attached to a tennis racket handle 8, the inverted-U-shape of the device generally corresponding to the cross-sectional shape of the racket handle.
The device is accurately located on the racket handle such that the markings indicate where a player should place the V-shaped notch formed between his thumb and index-finger when playing certain shots. The device is therefore useful for teaching tennis.
The markings shown in Figures 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have the following meanings:
W - Western forehand
SW - Semi-western forehand
E - Eastern forehand
C - Chopper grip
B - Backhand
BH - Double-handed backhand
Thus, to correctly grip the racket handle to play a western forehand shot, for example, a player should align the V-shaped notch formed between his thumb and index-finger with the marking line W.
The device has a top surface which is 71mm long and 22mm wide.
Referring to Figure 3, a device for teaching a right-handed player has a marking W located lmm from the right-hand end of the device; a marking SW located 16mm from the right-hand end; a marking E located 24mm from the right-hand end; a marking C located 41mm from the righthand end; a marking B located 54mm from the right-hand end; and a marking BH located 27mm from the right-hand end. These measurements are of course slightly variable.
Referring to Figure 4, a device for teaching a left-handed player also has these measurements for location of the markings, but measured from the left-hand end of the device.
The device 2 is releasably attached to the racket handle 8 by a releasable strip of a hook and loop fastener such as VELCRO@. As shown in Figure 2, the underside of the device is provided with a fastener strip 10 which releasably attaches to a cooperating fastener strip attached to the handle of the racket. This enables easy removal of the device from the racket handle so that, for example, a device for a right-handed player is quickly and easily replaced by a device for a left-handed player.
Alternatively, a releasable fastener strip could be attached to the device such that it attaches to itself after encircling the racket handle.
Figure 6 shows marking means located on the racket handle 8 and comprising the markings 6. The marking means are integral with the racket handle or permanently attached thereto. If, for example, the markings are provided on a length of adhesive tape, the spacing between markings will vary according to the handle size of the racket concerned.
Figure 7 shows a device 2 having clipping means 12 for attaching the device to a racket handle. The clipping means may be of a resilient plastics material.
It will be appreciated that the device need not be made of four rectangular panels. It could equally be semi-circular or circular in shape, for example.
The device may be of a plastics material.
Alternatively, it may be of a releasable strip having markings 6 thereon. The releasable strip may encircle the racket handle.
Although the embodiments of the present invention described above relate to tennis, the present invention is also useful, with suitable modifications to the markings, for other racket sports such as squash and badminton.
