Abstract

A shoe or boot is fabricated wholly or partly from a transparent material which allows the wearer or another person to observe the foot in the shoe or boot to ascertain whether it fits correctly. The invention is particularly advantageous for use with ski boots in which correct fit is very important but difficult to ascertain by wearers who are inexperienced.

Description

TRANS PARENT FOOTWEAR The present invention relates to transparent footwear, such as shoes or boots particularly for use when skiing.
Shoes or boots are used to support and protect the feet. For certain sport and leisure activities special types of shoes or boots have been developed which are adapted to suit the particular requirements of the activity. A prime example is ski boots which are used to give strong support and protection to the wearer's feet and ankles and to connect the wearer to his skis. However, shoes or boots can cause great discomfort to the wearer in the situation where they do not fit correctly. If the shoes or boots are too tight they may press and pinch the feet or if they are too loose the feet may slip inside them. Either situation can lead to abrasion and painful blisters or possibly more serious injury. Moreover, in the case of specialist footwear such as ski boots, an incorrect fit will prevent the boot functioning as it is intended and may increase the risk of the wearer injuring himself in a fall. Problems arise particularly in the case of children whose feet grow rapidly but who may not be able to ascertain and communicate to an adult that their footwear does not fit properly. Ill-fitting footwear is at best uncomfortable and at worst, if worn over a long period of time, can lead to deformities of the feet and poor posture.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to the design or construction of a shoe or boot which allows the wearer to visually observe part or all of the foot to ascertain correct fit of the footwear. It is already known to produce children sandals from colourless or coloured transparent or semi-transparent plastic. However, such sandals are generally flexible and fairly loose-fitting. They do not entirely enclose the foot but have gaps between the various straps and panels and therefore do not provide significant support to the foot and do not require especially accurate fitting. The present invention is primarily directed to much more substantial plastic moulded shoes or boots used to support and protect the feet.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a shoe or boot of a rigid or semi-rigid material which in use provides support and protection to the wearer's foot, wherein the whole or a part of the shoe or boot is transparent such that the foot can be observed in the shoe or boot to determine the correct fit.
In another aspect of the invention one or both of the toe portion and the heel portion of the shoe or boot are transparent.
In a further aspect of the invention the shoe or boot is adapted for use when skiing to support and protect the wearers foot and ankle and which is releasably fixable to a ski.
In yet another aspect of the invention the shoe or boot is fabricated from a transparent plastic material.
Having part or all of the shoe or boot fabricated in a transparent plastic material allows the wearer or persons other than the wearer to ascertain the correct fit of said shoes or boots and to visually observe the points of incorrect fit or points of abrasion which may cause discomfort or damage to the wearer. The invention is especially useful when fitting shoes or boots for the purpose of skiing to allow the hirer or salesperson to determine the correct fit of shoes or boots tried by the wearer in cases where the wearer may not have the experience to determine the correct fit himself. In the case of ski boots, each boot is provided with means which enable it to be releasably fixible to a ski. Typically, this is in the form of a flange protruding from the heel and toe regions around which a ski binding can engage.
The body of the shoe or boot can be entirely fabricated from a transparent plastic material or only partly fabricated from such a transparent plastic material in the areas where correct fit is considered of greatest importance. Two areas where correct fit are particularly important are the toe and heel areas.
The plastic material is preferably rigid or semirigid.
The invention of a transparent shoe or boot is particularly advantageous for fitting children's footwear, when it can be difficult to ascertain the correct fit. The invention can be used in the form of a shoe or boot fabricated as an example of an existing design of shoe or boot, the transparent version being used specifically for the purpose of determining correct fit, or, as a shoe or boot designed to be worn normally whilst still allowing observation of the foot.
Transparent shoes or boots may also have an application for remedial footwear for correcting or overcoming disabilities or deformities.

Claims (6)

1. A shoe or boot of a rigid or semi-rigid material for providing support and protection to the wearer's foot, wherein the whole or a part of the shoe or boot is transparent such that the foot can be observed in the shoe or boot to determine the correct fit.
2. A shoe or boot as claimed in claim 1, wherein one or both of the toe portion and the heel portion of the shoe or boot are transparent.
3. A shoe or boot as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein it is adapted for use when skiing to support and protect the wearer's foot and ankle and which has means which enable it to be releasably fixable to a ski.
4. A shoe or boot as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein it is adapted for remedial use to correct or overcome disabilities or deformities.
5. A shoe or boot as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the shoe or boot is fabricated from a transparent plastic material.
6. A shoe or boot substantially as hereinbefore described.
