Abstract
A display board comprising a support unit (11) with a plurality of apertures (16) therein and at least one card carrier (21) for detachably mounting on the support unit. Each carrier has a frame (22) into which a two dimensional object can be loaded for display and has at least one hinge means (28) projecting from its upper frame portion (23) that is detachably engagable in a respective aperture (16). The carrier has upper and lower frame portions connected by a curved panel (Figure 2), the frame portions having slots to receive a sheet-like object which is curved around the panel.
Description
A DisPlaY Board
This invention relates to display boards for displaying two dimensional objects such as cards, in particular paint sample cards.
Motor vehicle dealers when dealing with customer enquiries regarding the colour range of a vehicle model or models either have a brochure in which the various colours are displayed, or a book of individual cards or pages each of which coated in a different colour paint.
A problem with the brochure is that the colours disclosed are not accurate being colour printed representations of the vehicle paints, and the books of individual painted cards do not allow for display of all the colours simultaneously to customers for comparison, but must be examined page by page.
The present invention is a development of the display board described in the applicants earlier co-pending application
Nos GB9420464.1 in which there is provided a display board comprising a support unit, and at least one cartridge (or card carrier) for detachably mounting on the support unit each cartridge having a frame into which a two dimensional object, preferably a paint sample card, can be loaded.
According to the present invention there is provided a display board of the above type characterised in that the support unit has a plurality of apertures, and the or each carrier has at least one projection that is detachably engagable in a respective aperture.
Preferably each aperture is in the form of an elongated slot which when the board is in use is substantially horizontal.
Preferably the support unit comprises a substantially flat front face having a peripheral sidewall extending rearwardly thereof, said side wall having a rear flange extending outwardly thereof substantially parallel to the front face.
Conveniently each carrier is attached to the support unit by a hinge means projecting from an upper portion of the carrier.
The hinge means may be a drop hinge, and may comprise first a portion projecting normally from the carrier with a second portion extending from the end of the first portion substantially normal thereto and away from the carrier.
Also according to the invention there is provided a method of displaying paint samples using a display board according to the invention.
The invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a carrier for a display
board according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is an end view of the carrier in the
direction of arrow A,
Fig. 3. is a front elevation of a support unit,
Fig. 4 is an isometric view of a support unit and
carrier according to the invention, and
Fig. 5 is an isometric view of a second display
board also according to the invention.
Now with reference to Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, there is shown a support unit 11 which is moulded from suitable plastics material such as high impact polystyrene, or polyacrylonitrilebutadienestyrene (ABS).
The support unit 11 has a substantially flat front face 12, surrounded by a peripheral sidewall 13 extending rearwardly substantially normally of the front face 12. The sidewall 13 has a flange 14 at its rearmost end that extends outwardly of the sidewall 13 substantially in parallel with the front face 12.
The support units 11 each have a plurality of apertures 16 therein that are arranged in horizontal line. Each aperture 16 is in the form of an elongated slot and can be utilised for detachably mounting a display card carrier 21 (sometimes referred to as a cartridge) onto the support unit 11.
The flange 14 can be used for securing the support unit 11 and is an Arken (trademark) frame.
Now with reference also the figures 1 and 2, each display card carrier 21 is substantially rectangular having a frame 22 including an upper frame portion 23 and a lower frame portion 24. The upper and lower frame portions 23, 24, each have an inwardly directed slot 25 therein for receiving the edge portions of a two dimensional object in the form of a card.
Each carrier is a moulded acrylic or polystyrene plastic component and comprises the upper and lower frame portions 23, 24, with a curved panel 26 extending therebetween. The panel 26 is curved out of one plane only.
The carrier 21 presents a completely open face to the front and a solid back face.
The sides of the curved panel 26 are flanked by lips 27 which have a maximum height at the upper and lower end portions fading to substantially no height at the peak of the curved panel. This is so that when a card, particularly a paint sample card, is inserted in the carrier the observed painted curved surface is not interrupted at its peak by the lips 27 which retain the card on the carrier.
A flexible card is insertable into the open slots 25 and is sufficiently flexible to take up a curved shape dictated by the form of the curved panel.
The back face edge of the upper frame portion 23 has a detent in the form of a hinge means 28 extending therefrom.
The hinge 28 is in the form of a drop hinge having a first portion 29 extending away from the carrier 21 at right angles thereto, and a second portion 31 attached to the end of the first portion and extending normally thereof away from the carrier. The hinge means 28 can be accommodated in an aperture 16 in the support unit 11 so as to detachably mount the carrier 11 to the support unit.
The detents 21 are formed integrally with the frame and are pushed through the aperture 16 to lock on the back surface of the front face 12, as can be seen in Fig. 5.
The support unit may have single carrier 21 attached thereto or elongated carriers 31, 41, having more than one hinge means.
The card 18 is preferably a paint sample card, that is a card made of Cromolux 300 micron paper or metal foil which has been sprayed with a paint of the colour to be displayed. Preferably the paint is a car body paint such as an alkyd based paint, cellulose based paint or a two pack acrylic paint.
The curved card displays the colour in a more realistic manner than a flat card because it mimics a car body curved panel and the curved surface catches the light.
Fig. 6 shows a second embodiment of the invention in which the support unit 11 has a plurality of paint cards display carriers 21 mounted thereon in horizontal rows, with an elongated carrier 31 at the upper portion of the support unit 11. A rack 33 is attached to the lower portion of the support unit 11, also by drop hinges. The rack supports a plurality of arms 34 pivoted thereto. Each arm supports a sample of car trim cloth presented for consideration in association with the car paint samples.
