Description
TWO SPEED ELECTRICAL MOTORS
This invention relates to a method of providing two different speeds from one electrical drive motor in such way that either of the two speeds may be selected by operation of an electrical switch.
By use of said invention the power available from the electrical drive motor is substantially the same at both of the two selected speeds. The electrical drive motor may be of any type that can be reversed by means of an electrical reverse switch.
Consider the electrical motor shown in Fig 1 that is provided with electrical power via. a reversing switch. It may be considered that this motor is capable of two speeds i.e. N r.p.m.
and -N r.p.m. where the negative sign represents reversal of the output speed direction. It is the function of this invention to convert this reversal of output speed direction into another output which is in the same direction as the other output speed but which may have a value which is the same as or higher or lower than this other output speed.
Such function may be achieved by incorporating two drive trains between the motor and an output shaft one of which provides a reversal of sense of the motor shaft rotation and the other one not. It is arranged that only one of these drive trains may be operative at any time by the incorporation of one way clutches in each of the drive trains. These one way clutches are variously called Sprag clutches,Roller clutches or Reversible clutches.
Fig 2 shows one possible arrangement of a motor and drive trains so that the desired result may be obtained of providing two output speeds from one motor that may be electrically reversed.
This invention is of particular benifit when using either single or multi phase induction motors which are easily reversed but are normally of constant output speed.
The drive trains may employ gears,belts,toothed belts or chains whichever is suitable for any particular application.
This invention may be of benifit in the driving of machine tools,transport applications and servo mechanisms.
Claims (7)
- TWO SPEED ELECTRICAL MOTORSCLAIMS 1. A two speed electrical motor system whereby either of the two speeds may be selected by means of an electrical switch.
- 2. A two speed electrical motor system as claimed in claim 1 whereby the electrical switch is used to select either the foward or reverse direction of the motor output shaft.
- 3. A two speed electrical motor system as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 whereby the motor output shaft is connected to another output shaft via two seperate drive trains.
- 4. A two speed electrical motor drive system as claimed in claim 1, claim 2, and claim 3 whereby each drive train imparts the same direction of rotation to the common output shaft for each direction of rotation of the motor shaft.
- 5. A two speed electrical motor drive system as claimed in claim 1, claim 2, claim 3 and claim 4 whereby each drive train contains a one way clutch so configured that one drive train is operative for foward direction of the motor output shaft and the other drive train is operative for reverse direction of the motor output shaft.
- 6. A two speed electrical motor drive system as claimed in claim 1, claim 2, claim 3, claim 4 and claim 5 whereby the speed of the common output shaft may be either of two values determined by the ratio of each drive train,the output speed of the electric motor and the direction of the electric motor output shaft.
- 7. A two speed electrical motor drive system as claimed in claim 1, claim 2, claim 3, claim 4, claim 5 and claim 6 where the speed of the common output shaft may be selected to either one of two values by operation of an electrical switch.
