Abstract

The spacer alignment sight is an instrument for the accurate alignment of cable spacers in a square and vertical pattern across a power line. The arms 3 are adjusted until the clamps 2 are the correct distance apart, the clamps being set square on the cables before fixing in place. Mounting brackets (5, Figure 2) are adjusted until a level (6) is central, locked in place and the sight removed. The sight can be adjusted to suit all known conductor cable diameters and sets of conductor cables at varying distances apart.

Description

SPACER ALIGNMENT SIGHT This invention relates to the alignment of conductor cable spacers and conductor cable spacer dampers, in the overhead power line industry.
Conductor cable spacers and conductor cable spacer dampers are both means of separating or keeping apart two or more conductor cables, which are hung together in a parallel formation. These formations or sets of cable are suspended from masts or towers which carry them over land, this is called a power line.
The sets of cables are carried from one tower to the next this creates what is known as a span of cable which could be several hundred meters long and would require a number of spacers throughout its length. Although there is a known method, and instrument for measuring the distance between each spacer, this invention however is for the accurate alignment of conductor cable spacers and conductor cable spacer dampers from a single measured position on one set of cables.
With this invention a spacer chair operator can now accurately line up all the spacers, without assistance from the ground.
This invention provides an instrument for the accurate alignment of conductor cable spacers and conductor cable spacer dampers. It comprises of a rotating alignment sight which is connected to an adjustable mounting bracket with fitted level. The mounting bracket is connected to the base and can be located in one of several positions along its length. At each end of the base are adjusting arms which can be locked in any position.
At the end of each adjusting arm there is a securing clamp which is fitted with changeable soft jaws.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a front view of the spacer alignment sight.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the spacer alignment sight.
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the spacer alignment sight.
Refering to the drawing, a spacer alignment sight, as shown in fig 1, 2 and 3. In order to secure the spacer alignment sight, fig 1, 2 and 3, to a set of cables, first select the appropriate set of soft jaws 1 and fit them into the cable clamps 2. Adjust the adjusting arms 3 until the cable clamps 2 are the correct distance apart. Open the cable clamps 2 and secure one of them to one of the cables at the measured position. The second cable clamp 2 is secured in position by way of set square, not shown, this ensures the rotating sight 4 is square to the set of cable. Now adjust the mounting brackets 5 until the level 6 is in a central position, and lock in place. The rotating sight 4 will arc square and vertical to the set of cables, that the spacer alignment sight, shown in fig 1, 2 and 3, is secured to. The correct position of the remaining spacers can now be accurately sighted from that one measured position. The spacer alignment sight shown in fig 1, 2 and 3 is removed from the cables and the proceedure is repeated at the next measured position.
