Abstract

A battery charge condition monitor displays the charge state of a rechargeable battery, using indicator lights. The battery terminal voltage is compared with predetermined voltages on a potential divider and indicator lights are used to display the charge condition. A Hall sensor determines the direction of current through the battery leads and controls a MOSFET transistor to switch the divider resistance values in accordance therewith. <IMAGE>

Description

VERY SIMPLE . HIGHLY ACCURATE - BATTERY CHARGE CONDITION MONITOR FOR SMALL YATCHS DESCRIPTION MONITORS BATTERY VOLTAGE AT THE BATTERY TERMINALS USING A SPECIAL LEAD PAIR, WHICH CARRY HIGH CURRENT WITH BUILT IN VOLTAGE MONITORING CAPABILITY.
THE INVENTION RELIES ON THE FACT THAT THE BATTERY TERMINAL VOLTAGE CAN BE SHOWN GRAPHICALLY AS A MULTIPLE OF THE CELL VOLTAGE: Needs to be prototyped to check functionality.

Claims (5)

1. Displays the charge condition of a rechargeable battery eg. a lead acid battery, using a measurement of the battery terminal voltage and measurement of the direction of current flow through the battery. (see page I of application).
2. Measurement of voltage is carried out by use of a series of comparators, comparing the battery voltage with predetermined voltages on a potential divider, which are used to operate indicator lights displaying battery charge condition. The graph (page 2 of application) shows how battery voltage varies according to the charge state and whether the battery is being charged or discharged.
3. Measurement of current direction is carried out by using a Hall effect sensor on the battery lead.
4. The output of the Hall effect sensor is used to switch potential divider resistor values, such that one set of values is used when the battery is being charged and another set when the battery is being discharged. In this way different thresholds are set for the 2 conditions. (see page 3 of application).
5. The resistor potential dividers are used to set the voltage thresholds for the 2 conditions during an initial calibration. In this way the indicator light for say 60% charge should be illuminated if the battery is 60% charged, regardless of whether the battery is being charged or discharged, although the battery terminal voltage is different for the 2 conditions.
