Abstract

A stretch sleeve 6 is to be applied to a section 5, between upper and lower sections 3 and 4, of a container. The sleeve 6 has one or more strips of adhesive material 7 applied to the inner surface of the sleeve and extending along the sleeve. The or each strip of adhesive material was covered by a membrane 8, free from adhesive on its face remote from the material 7. The membrane or membranes 8 was or were peeled off the adhesive material 7 immediately before stretching the sleeve so that its width increased and passing it over the upper section 3 of the container until it surrounded the section 5. Then the sleeve was released and allowed to revert substantially to its original size and engages on to the section 5, to which it was stuck by the adhesive material 7. The sleeve bears information about the intended contents, e.g. liquid or powder, of the container. <IMAGE>

Description

Covering an Article with a Sleeve.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a device which is suitable for use in covering an article, the device comprising a stretch sleeve having on its inner surface at least one area of adhesive material covered by a membrane which is free from adhesive on its face remote from said adhesive material and can be peeled off said adhesive material.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a process for covering an article in which there is employed a device comprising a stretch sleeve having on its inner surface at least one area of adhesive material covered by a membrane which is free from adhesive on its face remote from said adhesive material and in which the membrane or membranes is or are peeled off the adhesive material, the sleeve is stretched and caused to surround the article and then released so that it reverts substantially to its original size and engages on to the article and is stuck to it by the adhesive material.
The article may be a container, for example one intended to contain a liquid or a powder, or a solid article.
An example in accordance with the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a container covered by a sleeve, and Figure 2 shows diagrammatically a cross-sectional view of the sleeve taken as indicated by the arrows II in Figure 1.
The container shown in the drawings has a handle 1, a pouring spout 2, an upper section 3, a lower section 4 and an intermediate section 5. The sections 3 to 5 are circular or approximately rectangular, as seen in plan view, and the section 5 is slightly narrower than the sections 3 and 4 and is to be covered by a sleeve 6.
The sleeve 6 is a stretch sleeve, i.e. it can be stretched, so that it becomes wider, and reverts substantially to its original size when the stretching force is removed. Originally the sleeve 6 was part of a device which can be taken to the site where the sleeve is to be applied to the container, the device comprising, in addition to the sleeve itself, four elongate and rectangular strips 7 of adhesive material (although there could be more than four) uniformly spaced around the inner surface of the sleeve and extending along the sleeve, the length direction of the sleeve and strips being the same.
Each strip 7 is covered by a membrane 8 which has along one side a portion 9 which projects laterally beyond the adhesive and, proceeding towards its outer edge 10, becomes progressively further away from the sleeve 6.
There is no adhesive on that face of the membrane 8 which is remote from the sleeve 6.
Parts of a machine for applying the sleeve to the container grip the portions 9 of the membranes 8 and the membranes are then manually peeled off the strips 7. The sleeve is then stretched and passed over the section 3 of the container until it surrounds the section 5 and then the sleeve is released so that it shrinks on to the section 5 and is stuck to it by the adhesive.
The sleeve bears information relating to the product intended to be put in the container. The adhesive material 7 can be such that the sleeve is damaged if it is pulled off the container or such that the sleeve remains stuck to the container in normal handling but can be peeled off intact.
Instead of having four or more narrow strips of adhesive material in the device there could be less than four areas of adhesive material, not necessarily in the form of a narrow elongate strip or strips and there could only be one such area.
It will be appreciated that the present invention is a device where one has the practical integration of a stretch sleeve and adhesive at the time of manufacture of the sleeve. The device as supplied to the user is a single unit of stretch sleeve and adhesive.

Claims (8)

1. A device which is suitable for use in covering an article, the device comprising a stretch sleeve having on its inner surface at least one area of adhesive material covered by a membrane which is free from adhesive material on its face remote from said adhesive material and can be peeled off said adhesive material.
2. A device according to claim 1 in which the or each area of adhesive is elongate and extends along the sleeve.
3. A device according to claim 2 in which there are at least four elongate strips of adhesive material spaced uniformly around the inner surface of the sleeve.
4. A device which is suitable for use in covering an article, the device being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. A process for covering an article in which there is employed a device comprising a stretch sleeve having on its inner surface at least one area of adhesive material covered by a membrane which is free from adhesive on its face remote from said adhesive material and in which the membrane or membranes is or are peeled off the adhesive material, the sleeve is stretched and caused to surround the article and then released so that it reverts substantially to its original size and engages on to the article and is stuck to it by the adhesive material.
6. A process according to claim 5 in which said device is in accordance with any one of claims 2 to 4.
7. A process for covering an article, the process being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A container to which a covering has been applied by a process according to any one of claims 5 to 7.
