Abstract

A wall mural kit comprises of a paper (or other material) sheet(s), (1) on which is printed an outline of design (2). The sheet(s) can then be pasted directly onto a wall or some other prepared surface (fig. 1 or 3) and the design outline filled in with paint according to a reduced scale picture guide. Alternative versions include printed sheets where the print is loosened from the sheet by a medium when the sheet(s) is placed against the prepared surface leaving the print ink of the design outline on the prepared surface (figures 3-5). The wall then effectively becomes the substrate onto which paint is directly applied according to the reduced scale picture guide. The kit may also include paints and brushes. Another version include sheets chosen to permit bleeding through of a suitable marker pen which when traced around the design outline bleeds through onto the wall surface (figures 7-8) leaving a facsimile of the design outline.

Description

'DO IT YOURSELF' MURAL KIT The invention relates to a 'Do it yourself mural kit.

Murals (wall paintings) have been practised since the earliest forms of civilization. Murals differ from other forms of painting due to the painting being applied directly onto the wall surface. The wall effectively becomes the substrate for the paint and the mural can be considered to be as permanent as the wall surface itself.

Mural painting, as in any other form of painting, requires great skill. Historically mural artists have been highly competent artists and draughtsmen, good examples being the artists of the 'Rennaissance' period. Today there exists specialist mural artists, usually working by commission - they too, are always competent artists and draughtsmen.

According to the present invention there is provided a 'Do it yourself mural kit comprising a sheet of paper on which is printed an outline of a design. The form of the design outline is similar in appearance to that of 'painting by numbers' kits; i.e. the areas of separate colour which form the design are bordered by lines.

There is also a reduced scale colour picture ofthe,completed mural. This serves as a guide (reference) to enable the user to fill in the design outline areas with the appropriate colours.

'Painting by number' kits use numbers printed into each area which correspond to a particular colour to be filled into that area. This can be considered to be a superfluous detail with this invention as the reduced scale picture guide provides enough information to complete the mural.

Also included in the kit are paints, brushes and adhesive.

The present invention will enable persons of all artistic and draughtsmanship ability to undertake to complete a mural of their chosen design (there will be many designs from which to choose). Once completed the mural would show no evidence that there was assistance from the invention afforded to the user, as the lines that make up the design outline will have been obliterated by the paint.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a view of the paper sheet with the printed design outline pasted to a wall prior to completion.

Figure 2 shows a view of the paper sheet with printed design outline at a partially complete stage of painting.

Figure 3 shows a view of a composite mural design (using in this example 2 printed sheets) being constructed prior to painting.

Referring to the drawings the mural kit comprises a paper sheet which can be made from various forms of paper. it is found, however, that a thin, lightweight paper, (like the type used for newsprint) at around 50 - 75 g/s.m is preferable as this makes the paper comparatively invisible in texture after fixing to the wall. Slightly porous papers are also preferable due to their ability to provide a good 'key' for the paint.

On the paper sheet (1) is printed the design outline (2). The design outline (2) can be printed using printing processes such as lithographic and silk screen. The reverse side of the paper sheet 1. is then pasted with a water soluble form of adhesive, included as part of the kit. The paper sheet (1) is then transferred to and applied to the desired area of the wall (3) in the manner of applying wallpaper.

Once dried and set onto the wall surface (3), the printed side of the paper sheet (1) now forms the substrate onto which the paint is applied according to the outline of the design and to the instructions given in the reduced scale colour picture guide. The process of painting the mural now begins.

The form of the design outline (2) is similar in appearance to that commonly found in 'painting by numbers' kits in the respect that the design outline (2) is made up of distinct areas separated and bordered by printed lines. These distinct and separate areas are filled in by brushing with a designated paint colour given in the reduced scale picture guide.

The size of the printed sheet (1) and hence the design outline (2) can be various. It is thought typically that a suitable size would be approximately (2m x 1.5m). Larger mural designs would comprise more than one paper sheet (1) as described in fig.3. (For example using the above sheet size, a double sided mural design would be formed from 2 (2m x 1.5m) paper sheets (1) making a (3m x 2m) mural or a (4m x 1.5m) mural depending on how the design and the sheets were configured. Datum marks(4) printed on the sheets (1) are used to align multiple paper sheet designs.

In the example in fig.3 where the overall mural comprises 2 printed sheets, (ie in this case a left hand one and a right hand one) it is thought that the supplied kit could comprise 2 identical sheets. The left hand portion of the pattern and the right hand portion of the pattern would both be printed onto each sheet and would be differentiated by textural or graphical differences in the lines. (For example the left hand portion of the design could be printed in chain dotted lines and the right hadn portion in complete lines) - and if that were the case the chain dotted lines would be followed (painted) and the complete lines ignored on the left hand portion of the mural and visa versa for the right hand portion of the mural.

Alternatively the two printed sheets in this example would be separately printed and be distinct left hand and right hand sheets.

The colour of the design outline (2) can be various although it is deemed that white lines on an off white paper sheet (1) are optimum in terms of the paints, which may be slightly translucent, being able to obliterate the lines.

Another embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 4 shows the paper sheet with design outline prior to being placed against a wall.

Figure 5 shows the paper sheet being removed from the wall leaving the design outline print on the wall surface.

Referring to the drawings, the mural kit comprises a paper sheet (5) on which is printed a design outline (6) in reverse. In this embodiment the print side of the paper sheet (5) is pasted to the wall as in fig.4 with a medium which partially loosens the ink from the paper sheet After a period of time, but before the medium dries, the paper sheet (5) is peeled away from the wall and discarded leaving traces of the ink design outline (8) now no longer in reverse, on the wall (7) as in fig.5. The wall is now effectively the substrate onto which the paint is applied and the mural design is then completed in the same manner as the previous embodiment.

Another embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with the reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 6 shows the paper sheet with design outline fixed to wall.

Figure 7 shows the design outline being 'traced' or followed with a marker ink pen.

Figure 8 shows the paper sheet having been partially removed from the wall leaving the design outline (in marker pen ink) on the wall surface.

Referring to the drawings the mural kit comprises a paper sheet (9) on which is printed a design outline (10). The design outline (10) is printed onto a thin paper sheet (9) by a printing process such as lithographic or silk screen. The type of paper sheet (9) in this embodiment has been selected to permit the 'bleeding' through of a suitable marker ink pen (11). The paper sheet (9) with the design outline (10) is fixed to the wall (12) in position, temporarily, by means of thumb tacks (13) or some other temporary method such as sticking tape.

The user then follows the design outline (10) with the marker ink pen (11) exactly as in fig.7.

Due to the porous nature of the paper sheet (9) the ink from the marker ink pen (11) bleeds through the paper sheet (9) and onto the wall surface (12) thus leaving a facsimile (14) ofthe design outline (10) in marker pen ink (14) on the wall surface (12). The paper sheet (9) is then removed from the wall surface (12) and discarded. The mural design is then completed in the same fashion as described in the first embodiment.

Claims

1.A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit comprising a sheet(s) of paper on which is printed the outline of a given design. The sheet(s) are then transferred to the wall or other prepared desired surface and by various outlined means, the design outline is left on the wall or other surface. The outline is then filled in with paint according to a reduced scale picture guide (key) which is normally part of the packaging, in order to complete the mural.

2. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claim 1. wherein paper sheet(s) printed with the design outline is pasted onto a wall or other prepared surface in the manner of applying wall paper. Thereafter, and once set, painting takes place directly onto the surface of the paper sheet.

3. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claim 1 where paper sheet(s) are printed with the design outline in reverse. When pa sted to the wall or other prepared surface (with the design outline ink against the wall surface) with a medium which partially loosens the ink from the sheet, leaves the ink outline on the surface of the wall. The wall surface then effectively becomes the substrate on which the paint is applied directly (the printed sheet being discarded).

4. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claim 1. where the printed paper sheet(s) are temporarily fixed to the wall or other prepared surface. The sheet material has been selected to permit the bleeding through of a suitable marker pen which after being traced around the design outline bleeds through the sheet and onto the wall or other prepared surface leaving a facsimile of the design outline on the surface. The wall then effectively becomes the substrate on which the paint is applied directly (the printed sheet being discarded).

5. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claims 1,2,3 or 4 wherein larger mural designs would comprise a multiple number of printed sheets.

6. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claim 5. where multiple sheets are aligned according to datum marks printed on the sheets.

7. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claim 5. or claim 6. where the overall design comprises of more than one identically printed sheets. The portion of the printed pattern to be painted would be differentiated from one sheet to another by textured or graphical differences in the printed pattern outline.

8. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in claim 5. where the mural would comprise of a multiple number of non-identical printed sheets.

9. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claims where the printed design outline is of a colour whereby when overpainted is obliterated by the paint.

10. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claims whereby a colour reduced scale picture (usually part of the product packaging) is used to assist the user in determining which colour to apply to a particular part of the mural.

11. A Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claim whereby the kit will comprise the printed sheet (s) and the reduced scale picture guide only.

12. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claim whereby the kit will comprise the printed sheet (s), adhesive medium, paints, brush and reduced scale picture guide.

13. A Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claim whereby the design outline is made up of imdividual areas bordered by lines which are subsequently filled in individual fashion with a single paint colour.

14. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claim where the printed sheet may be of a material other than paper.

15. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit as claimed in any previous claim where the printed sheet is sufficiently lightweight and thin so that it can be folded many times so that a large mural can be packaged into a size approximately 100 times smaller.

16. A 'Do it yourself wall mural kit substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-8 of the accompanying drawings.
