The casing comprises a backplate for fixing to a wall or other surface and from which the mandrel projects horizontally. A cover is attached to the backplate with a locking arrangement which would usually be key operated. Tissue is dispensed through an opening in the underside of the cover.
The roll of tissue is of a size commonly known in the industry as "jumbo" sized.
It is known to provide a braking device for the mandrel to restrain overrun but preferably the dispenser of this invention has an improved braking facility.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a paper tissue dispenser comprising a backplate, a cover for attachment to the backplate in a closed position, support means for carrying a roll of tissue to be dispensed through an opening in the cover, the support means comprising a column projecting forwardly from the backplate, and means for locking the cover to the backplate in its closed position, wherein the lock means comprises a latch mounted on the cover for locking engagement with the column at its free end.
Preferably the column has an end surface at its free end in which a slot is provided, and the latch of the lock means has a cam adapted to pass through the slot and be turned to locate behind engagement means thereby locking the cover in its closed position.
It is also preferred that the engagement means are resilient means engaged by the cam when in its locked position.
In one embodiment of the invention the end surface of the column is provided by an end cap which is attached to the end of the column. Preferably a mandrel is rotatably supported on the column, and the end cap assists to retain the mandrel on the column.
The latch is preferably held captive on the inside of the cover and is operable by a key from outside the cover.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a paper tissue dispenser comprising a backplate, a cover, means for attachment of the cover to the backplate in a closed position, and support means for carrying a roll of tissue to be dispensed through an opening in the cover, the support means projecting forwardly from the backplate, wherein the attachment means comprise first and second latches on the back edge of the cover adapted to pass through apertures in the backplate and to engage behind the backplate when the cover is rotated into its closed position, and a third latch which engages guide means on the backplate, the guide means aligning the cover relative to the backplate.
In one embodiment the first and second latches are a pair of undercut lugs.
The third latch preferably engages behind said guide means when the cover is rotated into its closed position.
Preferably the latches are engageable with the backplate by rotating the cover through an angle. In 0 one embodiment, the angle is about 5 Lock means may be provided for locking the cover on the backplate in its closed position. The lock means are preferably as defined above.
In accordance with a third aspect of the invention there is provided a paper tissue dispenser comprising a backplate, a cover for attachment to the backplate in a closed position, and a mandrel for carrying a roll of tissue to be dispensed through an opening in the cover, the mandrel projecting forwardly from the backplate and being rotatably supported relative to the backplate, wherein the mandrel is deformable to receive different sizes of roll core.
Preferably the mandrel comprises a hub and a peripheral surface for engagement by the roll core, the peripheral surface being formed of T-shaped ribs extending longitudinally of the hub of the mandrel, and each rib being independently distortable.
The mandrel may have a lead-in taper for centralising the roll core on the mandrel.
Preferably the mandrel is rotatable on a column projecting forwardly from the backplate.
According to a fourth aspect of the invention there is provided a paper tissue dispenser comprising a backplate, a cover for attachment to the backplate in a closed position, a mandrel for carrying a roll of tissue to be dispensed through an opening in the cover, the mandrel projecting forwardly from the backplate and being rotatably supported relative to the backplate, and a brake device for at least restraining overrun of the mandrel, wherein the brake device comprises a brake shoe constantly applied by resilient means against a peripheral surface of the mandrel or a member which is rotatable therewith.
Preferably the brake shoe applies a braking force against a larger diameter journal located on the rear end of the mandrel.
It is also preferred that the brake shoe and the resilient means are an integrally moulded member and formed of a suitable plastics material, e.g. acetyl resin.
Preferably the resilient means are anchored on the backplate.
By way of example, a specific embodiment in accordance with the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toilet tissue dispenser; Figure 2 is a front elevation of the backplate and mandrel carrying a jumbo sized roll of toilet tissue shown in dot dash lines; Figure 3 is a rear view of the backplate, partly cut-away to illustrate the brake for the mandrel; Figure 4 is a top elevation of the backplate and the cover in exploded view showing the top locating means of the cover on the backplate; Figure 5 is a side elevation of the dispenser, partly cut-away to show the free end of the mandrel with the key operated latch in its unlocked position; and further cut-away to show the means for locating the cover on the backplate; and Figure 6 is a side elevation of the dispenser, partly cut-away to show the key operated latch in its locked position.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a dispenser 10 for large rolls 17 of toilet tissue which are so-called "jumbo" size rolls. In this embodiment, the dispenser is designed for rolls up to a maximum of 324 mm. The dispenser comprises a backplate 11 and a cover 12 constructed from a hygienic, durable, easy-clean plastics material. The backplate has keyhole slots 13, and for security an alternative set of mounting holes 14 for attachment of the dispenser to a wall surface by screws.
The backplate 11 also has a forwardly extending mandrel 15 which is rotatably mounted on a fixed column 16 for carrying the roll 17 of toilet tissue, and held thereon by an end cap 18. The cap is held on the free end of the column 16 by cold deforming each of four pegs 19 projecting forwardly from the column through holes in the cap. The mandrel is designed to compress its form to accommodate different sizes of roll core 20 which, in this embodiment, can vary between a nominal 56 mm. and 62 mm. in diameter. This variability provides the service operator with the opportunity of obtaining rolls 17 from alternative suppliers who use different core sizes. At the same time, it is common that the core 20 becomes distorted due to the compression load on the rolls during packaging, transport and storage.
To allow for varying core sizes and/or distortion of the core 20, the mandrel 15 has a lead-in taper which centralises the core of the roll on the mandrel, and comprises, in this embodiment, three independent T-shaped ribs 21 which extend longitudinally of the hub 22 of the mandrel and will individually deform to take-up the shape and size of the core of the toilet tissue roll. If desired, the mandrel 15 may have a different number of similar ribs, e.g. two or four.
The ribs 21 are preferably moulded integrally with the hub 22 of the mandrel. The material used for the manufacture of the mandrel should be durable and have sufficient flexibility. Therefore suitable materials are polyethylene, polypropylene, acetyl resin and other similar plastics materials.
The mandrel 15 is rotatable on the column 16 in either direction, but a brake is provided to inhibit free rotation of the mandrel thereon. The brake shown in Figure 3 comprises a brake shoe 23 mounted on the backplate 11 and constantly applied against a larger diameter journal 24 on the rear end of the mandrel by resilient means comprising a spring 25 having its ends anchored in sockets 42 in the backplate. In this embodiment, the spring 25 is integral with the brake shoe 23. The spring-loaded brake shoe applies sufficient force to create a binding effect or interference against free rotation of the mandrel, but does not prevent the mandrel from being rotated when tissue is dispensed from the roll. The control provided by the brake reduces the flywheel action which is induced when pulling on a roll of tissue, and thereby prevents over-spinning of the roll 17 and the consequential dispensing of more tissue than required. In practice, without a brake, this flywheel action can be extensive since the roll of tissue can be up to 3kg. in weight. The brake is tensioned by virtue of the material from which it is manufactured which, in this embodiment, is acetyl resin but may be another suitable plastics material.
It has been found that a combination of this type of braking device and the material used can result in a longevity of action which is better than conventional braking devices.
The cover 12 fits over a roll 17 on the mandrel 15 and is removably attached thereto by three latches. Two of the latches are undercut lugs 26 positioned on either side of the back edge of the cover which lock into respective slots 27 in the backplate by relative rotational movement of the cover. The third latch is a spigot 28 at the top of the cover on its inside surface which is guided into position by a fixed cam face 29 provided in an outrigged member 30 projecting forwardly from the backplate 11 (Figure 4). Thereby, when the cover is presented to the backplate, the spigot 28 is guided rotationally by the cam face 29 to locate the lugs 26 in their slots 27.The cover is then turned in a clockwise direction as viewed from the front so that the spigot becomes engaged behind the cam face within the outrigged member 30 and the undercut portion of each lug 26 is trapped behind the backplate. The spigot 28 also has a shallow lip 40 which can ride over the end of the cam face 29 in each direction.
In this embodiment, the cover is turned through an angle of about 5 and is then firmly attached on the backplate. Removal of the cover is achieved by a reverse operation.
For security and to prevent pilferage, the cover 12 is locked in place on the backplate 11, by a locking latch 31 which is held captive on the inside surface of the cover and projects through a slot 32 in the cap 18 holding the mandrel 15 on the column 16 when the cover is fitted on the backplate. The latch 31 has an enlarged head or cam 33 at its leading end for locking the cover by turning the latch through 900 using a key 34 which fits into a hexagonal socket 41 in the outer end of the latch. The socket 41 is accessible from outside the cover 12. The sides of the slot 32 in the cap 18 are defined by inwardly convex resilient members 35 which are depressed from behind by the shoulders 36 of the head or cam 33 of the latch 31, when the latch is turned to lock the cover. The resilient members 35 also provide internal detents 37 (shown in Figure 3) for positively locating the shoulders 36 of the cam 33 when the latch 31 is in its locked position (Figure 6).
With the cover 12 fitted in position on the backplate 11, the underside of the cover provides an access opening 38 through which the tissue is dispensed, which is clear of obstructions and allows easy hand access to the end of the tissue. Two cutting knives 39 are provided by downwardly facing serrated edges on either side of the access opening 38 to enable the dispenser to be fixed on either side of a cubicle.
In operation, the backplate 11 is fixed on a wall surface. A roll 17 of toilet tissue is pushed onto the mandrel 15 with the ribs 21 deforming according to the size of the roll core 20 and holding the roll for rotation with the mandrel. The cover 12 is fitted over the roll of tissue by engaging the three latches 26,28 with the backplate and by turning the cover in a clockwise direction. The cover is locked in position using the key 34 to rotate the latch 31 through 900 so that the shoulders 36 of the head or cam 33 are horizontally located in the detents 37 of the resilient members 35. The dispenser is then ready for use. When the roll of tissue is exhausted, the cover 12 may be unlocked and detached from the backplate 11 to allow the removal of the roll core 20 from the mandrel and its replacement by a new roll of tissue.
It will be appreciated that the braked mandrel allows a smooth and controlled dispensing operation, whilst restraining or even eliminating overrun.
The invention is not limited to the detailed arrangement of the example described above. For example, the dispenser may be adapted for dispensing paper tissue other than toilet tissue.
The brake shoe may also be applied directly against a peripheral surface of the mandrel instead of a journal attached thereto.
