Abstract

A dedicated portable examination unit for use with addressable alarm systems that can be attached to devices 5e within the system to establish read/write communications. <IMAGE>

Description

ALARM EQUIPMENT This invention relates to Alarm Systems.
In particular addressable fire alarms but is not limited to this alone.
Alarm systems that are able to give a precise location of a fire alarm, rely on the detection devices being able to communicate their position within the system to a control panel via an address located either in the detector or its base or a remote module connected to the device, if a device fails to respond then a fault condition will exist on the system, the fault may or may not be within the device itself therefore a means of interrogating the device at the location has a distinct advantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a portable unit, preferably hand held, primarily for interrogating fire alarm devices consisting of a housing to contain the electronics and a visual display for status information etc., a means of connecting the interrogating unit to the device that is to be examined. The present invention may also have the facility to program/re-program fire alarm devices on a stand alone basis.
A specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the unit attached to a fire detector head.
Figure 2 shows a control circuit for the unit.
Referring to the drawing the unit comprises a housing la preferably made of a plastic material in the form that is easily held in the hand. The unit incorporates a visual display this may be an LCD module 2b situated in a suitable position for ease of viewing, the unit may also incorporate a means to secure the device that is being examined in a user friendly position as shown in Fig 1 this may take the form of a movable arm 3c formed so as to allow different size and shaped devices to be held in a suitable position whilst being worked on, the movable arm 3c preferably folds away when not in use. Devices are connected preferably via a flexible connection 4d which interconnects between the unit fig 1 and the device 5e under examination, this enables differing shapes of devices to be accommodated whilst the examination is taking place. The flexible connector 4d is preferably a polarised coiled lead with three conductors terminated so as to be releasable connected to the device that is to be examined. The various functions of the unit are accessed via switches or alternatively a key pad 6f as shown in Fig 1, some typical operational functions are as follows: Read/Write, display the address/location, this may be the descriptive address (displayed in ASCII characters) as well as the coded address of the device, communications fail, interrogation of set parameters, fault diagnostics, etc. A hard copy facility may be incorporated within the unit or a print out port may be provided for. This list of functions is not exhaustive and the ability to alter the units operation ie. to add functions so that new devices may be examined would be advantageous, in this example, this may be done by re-programing the microcontroller in the unit.
