Abstract

A releasable coupling (1) which can grip and retain an object such as a pipe (2) inserted in the hollow body (3) of the coupling, with the gripping effect being releasable such that the object can be removed from the body. A sleeve (6) is movable axially within the body (3) and carries in a plurality of holes (7) around its circumference a number of rollers (9) which are adapted to grip the surface of the pipe (2). As the pipe is inserted the rollers (9) are able to move away from the pipe surface in the body (3) to allow it to enter, but as it is withdrawn, the rollers (9) are entrained and thus brought into contact with the cam surface (5) which forces them towards the pipe axis, thereby gripping the pipe. The gripping effect is released by pushing the sleeve (6) into the body (3) to disengage the rollers (9) from the cam surface (5) thereby permitting removal of the pipe (2). An O-ring seal (14) can be included to provide a fluid-tight seal, if desired. <IMAGE>
