Abstract

A method of forming a repository for radioactive waste comprises locating the waste in a subterranean vault and backfilling the vault with a filling matrial which is water permeable and provides a substantial reservoir of available alkalinity such that any ground water permeating through the filling material to the waste has a pH of at least 10.5.
