Abstract

A flexible substrate plate 2 carrying a microwave transmitter and directional antenna is bonded to the rear face of a conventional vehicle licence plate 1, 3. Activation of a switch connects the transmitter to a voltage source thereby initiating transmission of an embedded unique identification code issued to the vehicle by the Central Licensing Authority. The switch can be activated remotely or manually and deactivated automatically at the end of a transmission cycle. The substrate plate 2 can be the same or half the size of the licence plate with a thickness of 3 mm. At any traffic check point such as a toll gate, one or more receiver stations, depending on single or multiple lanes, can be installed to record the vehicle identification codes transmitted by passing vehicles. Codes received can be validated and stored in memory along with date and time and site location. Data can be processed for on-site control purposes and data files transferred to a central data base for further processing and archiving. <IMAGE>

Description

ELECTRONIC ENCODED VEHICLE LICENSE PLATE This invention relates to an electronic encoded license plate.
Vehicle license plates embossed with seven or more alpha-numeric characters are mounted at the front and rear of all motor vehicles for identification purposes. Vehicle registration number is issued by a Central Authority who may or may not include the issue of the license plates for the vehicle. It is often not easy or convenient to identity a vehicle license number visually, as in bad weather and in fast moving or congested traffic. Electronically encoded license plates issued by a Central Authority can be a cost-effective method for managing road traffic of the future.
According to the present invention, an electronic encoded license plate is a conventional vehicle license plate bonded with a micro miniature microwave code transmitter and directional antenna. The device is embedded within a slim flexible printed circuit, shielded from electro-magnetic and ultra violet irradiance interference. It takes the physical form of a 3mm thick flat plate bonded onto the reverse side of a conventional license plate. The invention provides a unique identification code to a vehicle in the individual license plate issued by the Central Licensing Authority to the vehicle.
When activated from a battery the encoded license plate will transmit its embedded identificaition code to a tuned receiver situated within a few meters from the near side of the vehicle. It takes fraction of a second for the transmit/receive transaction to be completed.
The code embedded can be up to 32 characters in alpha-numeric or encrypted to include owner's driving license, validity date etc. Code received will be stored in memory for immediate and further processing.

Claims (6)

1. An electronic encoded vehicle license plate comprising a microminiature microwave code transmitter and directional antenna embedded onto a flexible thin substrate material and bonded to the reverse side of a conventional vehicle license plate. When activated from a battery will transmit its identification code to a receiver situated on the near side of the vehicle at a distance up to 10 meters.
2. An electronic encoded vehicle license plate as claimed in Claim 1 wherein an authorized unique identification code of up to 32 characters can be implemented in the form of a read-only-memory [ROM] that is shielded from electro-magnetic and ultra violet interference.
3. An electronic encoded vehicle license plate as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the microwave transmitter when activated from a battery will transmit the identification code with 3 repeats cycle in successions within one half of one second.
4. An electronic encoded vehicle license plate as claimed in any preceding claim whereby a rechargeable battery can be switched on by the driver or remotely activated to start a transmission cycle. The said battery can be connected to the vehicle's battery as a backup.
5. An electronic encoded vehicle license plate as claimed in any preceding claim that permits a travelling vehicle to pass a check point at travelling speed of 10 to 200 km/hour by virtue of the speed its identification code is transmitted, received and verified.
6. An electronic encoded vehicle license plate as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the directional antenna is oriented towards a check point receiver stationed on the near side of the vehicle at a distance of up to 10 meters.
