Abstract

An aluminium wheel comprises a centre and a rim joined by adhesive. The two component parts are machined such that they locate together but leave a gap for adhesive application after assembly. The surfaces providing the adhesive gap are machined with the tool allowed to dwell and hence produce chatter marks to help keying of the adhesive. <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION The novelty lies in two facts: 1. That the two components are assembled into their final position and then bonded with a proprietry industrial adhesive. The important fact to note here is that the adhesive is applied after the two components have been assembled. This means there is no messy application of adhesive and no general removal of adhesive which has squelched out at the edges.
2. That the applied adhesive is used as a mechanical key so that when it has cured, the two components of the wheel are locked together as well as glued together. Figure 1 shows the general assembly of the two components before the adhesive has been applied. Figure 2 shows the position of the adhesive after application. The two components are turned from solid bar and it is important to note that the wheel centre has a relief turned on the outside diameter to allow the adhesive to form a mechanical lock when cured, see Fissure 3 . At this stage in the turning of the centre the tool is allowed to dwell for a short period of time. This introduces "chatter" into the relief. This is useful to the mechanical keying of the centre to the rim as the relief diameter is now likened to a many sided polygon rather than perfectly round, see Fissure 4 . It is for this locking feature that the small groove in the rim, see Figure 5 , has some chatter introduced by way of a dwell in the grooving operation. When the wheel has been assembled and bonded, the resulting resin "key" mating surfaces resist torque in use thanks to the polygon groove and relief.

Claims (4)

1. An aluminium wheel comprising two parts fixed together with an industrial adhesive.
2. The components are machined with the tools allowed to 'dwell' at certain points in order to introduce 'chatter' on those diameters which are mating faces in the assembled pr-uct. This ' chstte- ' is an important shape which helps the adhesive to for mechanical key when hardened. The shape of the mating face could be described as many sided polygon.
3. The two parts of the wheel are machined in such a way as to provide a space for the adhesive to freely flow and subsequently harden thereby providing a mechanical key to lock the two components together.
4. The two components are manufactured in such a way as to allow the assembly of the two components to give an assembled wheel before the application of the adhesive.
