Abstract

A scope leveller comprises a spirit level having a body 11 which is demountable from a mounting block 12 on telescopic sight 15 that is directly mounted on the rifle, pistol or crossbow. The mounting position on the telescopic sight tube is at any available position that the user wishes to use, other than the position occupied by the telescopic sight main mounts. As the body 11 is held by the mounting block 12 and not the telescopic sight main mounts this means that the scope leveller can be used in conjunction with any make of telescopic sight main mounts. <IMAGE>

Description

DEMOUNTABLE SCOPE LEVELLER This invention relates to a demountable scope leveller1 in particular for a telescopic sight fitted to a rifle, pistol or crossbow.
A scope leveller is a fairly recent device which comprises a spirit level fixed directly to the telescopic sight mount which holds the telescopic sight directly to the rifle, pistol or crossbow. There is one known type of scope leveller in the form of a swivel-out scope leveller in which the level is able to swivel out from the side of the scope at an angle of 90 degrees to be seen and moved back again when not in use.
Swivel-out scope levellers are, however fixed directly to the telescopic sight mount which holds the telescopic sight directly to the rifle1 pistol or crossbow. This means that the manufacturers' own brand of telescopic sight mount has to be used, which does not allow ideal positioning of the level along the main tube of the telescopic sight as it is committed to being in the position required by the scope mount holding the telescopic sight at the correct focal distance when fitted to the rifle, pistol or crossbow.
According to the present invention there is provided a demountable scope leveller comprising a spirit level and means for releasably securing a body of the level to a mounting block which in turn is permanently secured to the main telescopic sight tube at any available position that the user wishes to adopt.
This invention allows the user to make use of any existing telescopic sight mounts.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the spirit level with mounting block in position on the telescopic sight.
Figure 2 illustrates the spirit level and mounting block when separated.
Figure 3 is the view of the spirit level when looking through the telescopic sight.
Figure 4 shows the effect that can be achieved by keeping both eyes open when looking through the telescopic sight.
Referring to the drawing the scope level comprises a vial of liquid with an air bubble 10 set in a body 11 releasably secured to the mounting block 12 by, for example, a bolt, clamp, catch, or similar means (not shown). At the rear of the mounting block in the form of split ring the mounting block is permanently secured round the main tube of the telescopic sight.
In order to remove the body 11 from the mounting block 12 as shown in Fig 1 the means securing the mounting block to the body are released and the body is then withdrawn from the mounting block as illustrated in Fig 2.
To remount the body on the mounting block the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.
Fixing the mounting block position on the telescopic sight tube as close to the eye piece 16 as is possible, enables the bubble level to be seen when the eye is held away at the eye relief distance of the scope and still be able to see the reticule 13 as illustrated in Fig 3.
Moreover, when the mounting block position is as near to the eye piece as possible, it is achieved that when keeping both eyes open at the same time, the image seen by the eye looking at the bubble level 10 appears to be superimposed on the vertical reticule 13 seen by the other eye looking through the telescopic sight as illustrated in Fig 4.
It will be appreciated that, as the mounting block 12 remains permanently fixed to the scope tube 15, reattachment of the bubble level body 11 automatically achieves correct alignment of the level relative to the vertical reticule 13.

Claims (7)

1 A demountable scope leveller for a telescopic sight fitted to a rifle, pistol or crossbow comprising a spirit level and means for releasably securing the body of the level to a mounting block which in turn is permanently secured to the main telescopic sight tube.
2 A demountable scope leveller as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the mounting block is adapted to mount to the telescopic sight tube at any available position that the user wishes to use, other than the position occupied by the telescopic sight main mounts.
3 A demountable scope leveller as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the means of securing the mounting block to the scope tube allows for the use of any telescopic sight main mounts that the user may wish to use to mount the telescopic sight directly to the rifle, pistol or crossbow.
4 A demountable scope leveller as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the mounting position on the telescopic sight tube can be on the left-hand side for right-handed users and mounted on the right-hand side for lefthanded users.
5 A demountable scope leveller as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein fixing the mounting block position on the telescopic sight tube as near to the eye piece as possible enables the bubble level to be seen when the eye is held away at the eye relief distance of the scope and still be able to see the reticules.
6 A demountable scope leveller as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5 wherein the mounting block position on the telescopic sight tube is as near to the eye piece as possible to allow that, when keeping both eyes open at the same time, the image seen by the eye looking at the bubble level appears to be superimposed on the image of the reticules seen by the other eye looking through the telescopic site.
7 A demountable scope leveller substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawing.
