Abstract

229,379. Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Ltd., and Lloyd, J. Nov. 19,1923. Strut and tie-rod connections.-Sleeve-like clips encircling a tubular member for the attachment thereto of ties and struts in aircraft and other structures are secured in position by fasteners, adapted to flex under load, passing right through the joint, one or both ends of each fastener having a screwed nipple with a head bearing on the outside of the joint and a cylindrical body extending into the interior of the tubular member. The heads and nipples tilt and exert a pinching action upon the joint as the fasteners flex under load. Figs. 1 and 3 show a portion of a tubular member A to which are secured various struts F, J, K, L and' ties. The tube A is surrounded by a split sleeve B which is encircled by a two-part clip C, C<2> having lugs C<3>, C<4> provided with holes for the attachment of ties and of the struts J, K. Further strengthening pieces H<5>, H<6> are riveted through the lugs C<3>, C<4> where the struts are attached. The sleeve B and clip C, C<2> are secured to the tube A by members D having screwed ends which are engaged by nipples E having cylindrical portions E<2> engaging corresponding holes. The heads of the nipples are non-circular and look nuts or other locking means are provided. Any bending of the members D results in the nipple heads exerting a pinching action on the joint. The strut F is secured to an evebolt H and the strut L has a shank L<2>, both the eyebolt and shank passing right through the joint, the shank L<2> clamping a wiring lug M against a boss on the member H<5>. The strut F has a liner F<2> and socket G secured by members similar to the members D, the liner being omitted from the other struts. Fig. 6 shows a simpler joint in which a flanged clip N surrounds a sleeve B, strengthening- plates 0 being riveted thereto to reinforce the strut connection. Fig. 8 shows a tube end having a sleeve B, hollow plug Q, and clip U secured by members D, a strut T and a wiring lug S being secured to the plug Q by an eye bolt R. A screwed stem W may secure another strut in position. The members D may each have a permanently fixed head at one end.
