Abstract
A self-contained portable carbon dioxide extinguisher filling system has a pump which can transfer liquid carbon dioxide from a reservoir to a fire extinguisher by means of high pressure tubing and various controls. The system is housed in a box with a hinged lid. The pump (11) is driven by a DC motor (13) which in turn is powered by a rechargable battery (14). The reservoir is connected to the pump inlet and the extinguisher to an outlet on the box. The box also contains the necessary pipework, controls and wiring. An embodiment where the filling system is housed in a pair of boxes is also disclosed. <IMAGE>
Description
SELF-CONTINED CARBON DIOXIDE
EXTINGUISHER FILLING SYSTEM
This invention relates to a self-contained and portable COS fire extinguisher filling system.
C02 extinguishers are used widely throughout industry and commerce. When they need refilling the normal proceedure is to call in the companies contracted fire protection engineer, who takes the extinguisher and returns it to his workshop or a refilling centre. When the extinguisher has been refilled it is returned to the customer by the engineer.
This process involves time and therefore money. It also means the original owner of the extinguisher can be without proper fire cover for some period of time.
The invention, with the addition of a resevoir cylinder of liquid C02 and a set of scales, will enable the fire protection service engineer to fill the extinguisher at the time of the initial visit.
The present invention provides a self-contained C02 extinguisher filling system, comprising a box with a hinged lid containing a pump, dc motor and a battery together with hydraulic pipework, electrical wiring and controls.
n specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the system with the control panel fitted and the controls shown.
Figure 2 shows the system in plan view and the reletive position of the major components without the control panel.
Figure ; shows a diagrammatic layout of the hydraulic pumping system
Figure 4 shows the diagrammatic layout of the electrical power and control system.
Referring to the drawings the system consists of a box 1 with a hinged lid 2. Inside the box is fitted a high pressure pump 11 which is driven by a DC motor 13. The DC motor in turn is powered by a 19 Volt DC battery 14.
When the pump 11 is driven, liquid CO2 is pumped from a proprietry resevoir(not shown) connected to the pump inlet connection 8 and passes via the control valve 3 to the fire extinguisher which is connected to outlet connection 7.
Delivery pressure is monitored by pressure gauge 4 and safety is povided by a pressure operated electrical cut-off switch 16 and a pressure relief valve 15.
Electrical current from the battery 14 is controlled by an isolation switch 5 and then passes through relay 17 to run button 6 and then to the DC motor. Current to the relay 17 is via the pressure cut-off switch 16. If the delivery pressure rises above a pre-set level current to the relay is cut and the relay in turn cuts the current to the motor stopping the system.

Recharging of the battery 14 is via terminals 1o.
Nnother version ( not shown ) of the system consists of two boxes with hinged lids. One box contains the pump 11, motor 13 and all the hydraulics including the pressure cut-off switch 16 and the pressure relief valve is. The other box contains the battery 14 and all the electrical wiring and controls. When the system is in use the two boxes are connected by plug-in cables. The system thus split into two seperate parts makes the individual parts lighter and easier to carry. The bo containing the battery can also hold a battery charger if required.
Claims (7)
1. n self-contained C02 extinguisher filling system! comprising a box with a hinged lid containing a pump, dc motor and a battery together with hydraulic pipework, electrical wiring and controls.
2. A self- contained C02 extinguisher filling system as described in claim 1 wherein a pressure operated electrical cut-off switch and relay are provided to control over pressurisation.
3. n self- contained C02 extinguisher filling system as described in claim 1 wherein a pressure relief valve is fitted to control over pressurisation of the system.
4. n self- contained C02 extinguisher filling system as described in claim 1 with a pressure operated cut-off switch as described in Claim 2 and a pressure relief valve as described in Claim 3.
5. n self contained COn extinguisher filling system as described herein with reference to Figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawings.
6. n self-contained C02 extinguisher filling system as described herein but the system contained in two boxes one box to contain a pump, motor and all the hydraulic controls the other box to contain the battery and all the electrical controls. The two boxes to be interconnected by wires when the system is being used. At all other times the boxes are seperate.
7. n self-contained C02 extinguisher filling system as described in Claim 6 but with the addition of a battery charger to be contained in the box with the battery.
