Abstract

A bid indicating device for use in playing bridge comprises two polygonal blocks (A, B) and a holder (C) having a matching polygonal recess to support them side-by-side. Block A carries numerals from 1 to 7 and block B carries symbols for the four suits and "no trumps". The blocks may be separate or connected together for relative rotation about their common geometric axis. <IMAGE>

Description

BID INDICATORS.
This invention relates to a device for indicating bids made in playing the game of bridge.
In the play of bridge, some players, especially novices, sometimes need reminding of the contract being played, and the present device is specifically designed for this purpose.
It basically comprises a pair of polygonal blocks carrying indicia on their peripheral faces, one carrying numerals from 1 to 7 and the other carrying indicia representing the four individual suits (hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades) and an indication for "no trump" usually rendered as NT. The device also includes a base on which the blocks can rest in their chosen relative positions to indicate the contract in play.
One particular form of device in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing,in which: Fig 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig 2 is an exploded perspective view; and Fig 3 is a developed view showing the markings on the faces of the two blocks.
The device comprises two octagonal blocks A and B and a holder or base C recessed in its rear to match the contours of the blocks. One block, A has its peripheral faces printed or otherwise marked with numerals 1 to 7, respectively, with one face blank. Block B has alternate faces respectively marked with the traditional symbols for hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades, with the remaining faces marked NT for no trump. One face for each suit would suffice but it is preferred to mark them all rather than leave three blank faces.
The two blocks simply rest in the holder and could be quite separate from each other, but are preferably connected together for relative rotation about their common geometric axis, for example by means of a simple spigot and recess friction fit.In this case, the user can lift out the pair of blocks, rotate them to bring the desired faces into register and the simply place them back in the holder. The drawing shows the device set for "three clubs".
A further block could be added to remind the player of a "double" or "redouble" of the final contract.
The device could be made in a wide range of materials, but lends itself well to manufacture from woods. A particularly attractive effect can be obtained by choosing one wood for the blocks and a wood of contrasting natural colour for the base.

CLAIMS.
1. A bid indicating device comprising a pair of polygonal blocks of matching profile and carrying indicia on their peripheral faces, one block carrying respective numerals from 1 to 7 and the other carrying respective indicia representing the individual suits and "no trumps", and a base on which the blocks can rest side-by-side in their chosen relative positions to indicate the contract in play.
2. A device according to claim 1, inwhich the blocks are connected together for relative rotation about their common geometric axis.
3. A device according to claim 2, wherein a spigot attached to one block is received with friction fit in a recess in the other.
4. A device according to claim 1, 2, or 3, in which the two blocks are octagonal.
5. A device according to any preceding claim, in which alternate faces of the said other block carry symbols for the respective suits and the remaining faces are marked to indicate "no trumps".
6. A device according to any preceding claim in which the base is a free standing holder having a polygonal recess, open from above,to receive and support in stable manner the two blocks.
7. A device according to claim 6, in which the two blocks are octagonal and the recess is in the form of a half octagon of dimensions to match the blocks.
8. A bid indicating device substantialy as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
