Abstract
A plurality of fitments (4, Figure 2) are supplied on a flexible tape to a form fill seal pouch making machine where they are detached by a cutting knife 22 to pass down a track 25 to be welded individually to the inside of a pouch. An indexing wheel 21 may be used to guide the fitment strip 3 from a box 10. The tape and fitments may both be formed of linear low density polyethylene. <IMAGE>
Description
TAPED FITMENTS
The present invention relates to devices for attaching fitments to the inside of pouches formed from thermoplastic material in a (usually vertical) form fill seal pouch making machine. With the prior art vertical machine the fitments are provided in a hopper which feeds the fitments to a feed bowl which is vibrated so that the fitments are progressively fed to the top of a track positioned on the outer edge of the inside of the bowl, and are oriented in the same direction. The fitments are then fed down the track into the form fill seal pouch making machine in an ordered and controlled manner. The fitments are arrested at the exterior of a central column of the vertical form fill seal machine and then welded to the inside of a tube (surrounding that column) to be used to form the pouches which are then filled with the material to be packaged.
The pouch is then sealed and passed out of the machine.
The prior art presents several problems in respect of the fitment feeding operation. Firstly, there is a requirement for the fitments to be manually loaded into the hopper which is higher than the welding part of the machine to allow the fitments to be gravity fed. The flow of fitments from the hopper to the vibrating bowl has to be controlled to prevent too many fitments being in the vibrating bowl at any given time which would prevent it from working correctly. Control of the flow of fitments from the hopper is difficult because of their shape.
Consequently, the mechanism for controlling the flow of fitments is prone to jamming requiring frequent supervision by an operator standing on top of the machine. The vibrating feed bowl portion of the fitment supply apparatus suffers from similar jamming problems again due to the shape of the fitment parts. If too many fitments are fed into the vibrating bowl from the hopper or if one of the fitments enters the track portion of the bowl in an incorrect orientation, a jam may occur. There are also disadvantages in the number and complexity of parts involved in the hopper and feed bowl apparatus.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to overcome the problems of the prior art discussed above, and to provide a way of supplying fitments to the welding portion of the machine at a controllable rate and in the correct orientation, in a more reliable way.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for attaching fitments to the inside of a pouch comprising: means for receiving fitments attached to a continuous tape and feeding the fitments into the apparatus; means for separating a portion of the continuous tape with a single fitment or set of fitments attached thereto from the continuous tape; attachment means for attaching the fitment to the pouch; and means for feeding the portion of the continuous tape with the single fitment attached thereto, to the attachment means.
The fitments may be supplied in boxes which can be positioned on or near the floor adjacent to the fitment attachment machine. The taped fitments can then be fed into the machine without the need for complex apparatus such as that used in the prior art. By feeding the fitments direct from their packaging boxes into the machine, the risk of contamination of dirt or bacteria is minimised in comparison to the prior art where fitments are received from the packaging into the hopper, then from the hopper into the bowl of the apparatus and then into the machine.
A second aspect of this invention provides a fitment strip having a tape of flexible material to which is attached a plurality of fitments.
A third aspect of this invention provides the method of supplying articles to a device comprising the steps of:
attaching the articles to a tape;
feeding the tape, with the articles attached thereto, into the device; and
separating the articles from the rest of the tape.
The present invention will be further described hereafter with reference to the following description of an exemplary embodiment and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an individual fitment used in the strip of the present invention;
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the fitment strip of the present invention;
Figure 3 shows the method of packaging used for the fitment strip according to the present invention;
Figure 4 shows how the fitment tape strip according to the present invention is used in a form fill seal pouchmaking machine;
Figure 5A shows the pouch produced by the form fill seal pouch making machine with the fitment in place;
Figure 5B shows an enlarged portion of the pouch of
Figure 5A, showing the fitment and tape in position in the pouch; and Figure 6 shows an enlarged view of the fitment sealing head and the fitment track in the central column of the machine.
In the drawings like parts are indicated by like reference numerals.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the fitment strip of the present invention. Fitments 1 are attached to tape 2, by welding or by moulding them directly onto or integrally with the tape, to produce the fitment strip 3. The fitments are attached to the tape at a spacing sufficient to allow clearance between the outer diameters of the flange on the fitments so that as the taped fitments are fed into the packaging machine, they do not interfere with each other. In order to provide sufficient strength and flexibility, a tape made of a plastic material such as
LLDPE (Linear Low Density Polyethylene) of approximately 100 microns in thickness is preferably used.
The fitment strips 3 are provided in continuous strips held in supply boxes 10 capable of carrying several thousand fitments. Consequently, an operator is only required infrequently to change the boxes when the taped fitment is exhausted. The fitment strips are preferably layered into the box to allow easy and tangle free automated removal into the packaging device.
Alternatively, the fitment strips can be stored in other ways, e.g. by winding onto cores or rolls.
Figure 4 shows how the fitment strips are processed through the packaging device to produce the completed pouch. An index wheel 21 engages the fitments on the tape and removes them from the packaging box 10. A fitment strip is then raised to the top of the machine, passed around the index wheel and fed towards the mouth 29 of a fitment track 25 where the tape 2 is cut by a cutting knife 22, separating the fitments from each other.
Flange portions 4 of the fitments are then fed into the guides of the fitment track 25 which extends down a central column of the form fill seal machine. However, each fitment still retains the portion of the tape to which it was attached when part of the taped fitment. The fitments are then passed down the fitment track through the film forming collar 27 at which the flat web 23 of packaging film, which is used to form the walls of the pouch, is fed onto the forming collar 27 to be formed into a tube 26 which surrounds the fitment track and the central column of the machine. A fitment sealing head 24 is then used to weld the fitment onto the tube of packaging film to attach it thereto. Finally, the pouch-forming segment of tube 26 is sealed at one end, filled, and then sealed at the other end to complete the pouch.The product to be packaged is introduced into the partially completed pouch by way of a passage down the inside of the central column of the machine. The pouch, still attached to the tube 26 after sealing its upper edge, then descends to a second sealing station where it is then separated from the rest of the tube 26. The resultant pouch 28 is shown in Figure 5A.
The circled portion of Figure 5A shown enlarged in Figure 5B, shows the wall of the pouch formed by the packaging film 23 attached to the fitment 1 with the section of tape 2 sandwiched therebetween.
If desired, a further tape, to be stripped off the fitments before they enter the pouches, may be attached to the other ends of the fitments 1 in order to reduce the risk of tangling in the box 10 or during extraction therefrom.
The tape(s) can comprise an adhesive strip to facilitate attachments to the fitments.
In one embodiment, the adhesive strip can be progressively peeled away from the fitment track 25. This allows each fitment to be sealed to the wall of pouch 28 without an intervening section of tape 2 being present between the wall and the fitment.
If desired, for example, if one pouch is to have more than one fitment therein, there may be groups of more than one fitment each (for example pairs of fitments side-byside) attached at the appropriate intervals along the tape.
