Description
2292444 1 IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO ROTATABLE CONTROL MEMBERS This
invention relates to hand operated rotatable members for imparting rotational movement to a component connected to the rotatable member to control the setting thereof. More especially, but not exclusively, the invention relates to hand operated rotatable control knobs for varying the setting of a component connected to the control knob through a rotatable cable encased in a sleeve. The component connected to the rotatable member may comprise a rotatable cable of a control mechanism of a vertical blind located within a double glazing unit.
Double glazing units incorporating vertical blinds are known. In such a unit it is cui-jvei-iliutid, to provide an exterior rotatable hand operated control knob connected via a sheaved cable to an operating mechanism for altering the extent to which the individual blinds obscure 2 the glazed unit. One disadvantage is that the degree of adjustment to the blind settings is limited by the control knob being unable to turn through a full 360'.
The present invention sets out to provide a hand operated rotatable control member which overcomes, or at least alleviates, these disadvantages.
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a hand operated rotatable member for imparting rotational movement to a component connected thereto, the member including a casing formed with a central bore for receiving the component or a part thereof, track means positioned about the central bore of the casing into which projects a protrusion carried by one surface of a cap which closes the open side of the annular track, the casing being rotatable relative to the cap, said track means including a track section of increased depth which extends overonly a portion of the overall length of the track means and an intermediate member positioned within the track section of increased depth, the arrangement being such that the protrusion can move freely within the track means as the casing is rotated to cause the intermediate member to move within the track section of increased depth, rotation of the intermediate member being arrested when it makes contact with a stepped end of the track means.
3 The intermediate member is preferably a ball of, for example, steel.
lie component may comprise a rotatable cable to one end of which is secured an annular stud which locates within the central bore of the casing and is rotatable therewith. The casing may be produced from aluminium. The cap is preferably detachable from the casing. The cap may be produced from a plastics material.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a hand operated knob for controlling the setting of a vertical blind of a double glazing unit, the knob including internal track means formed with raised and lowered sections separated by stepped end walls and positioned about a central bore dimensioned to receive an annular stud end of a sleeved cable, and an intermediate member positioned within the lower section of the track and being movable along the length of the lower track by a projection carried by a cap which overlies the raised and lowered tracks.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a section taken through a rotatable member in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an end of view of the member illustrated in Figure 1; 4 Figures 3 and 4 are end and side views respectively of a cap forming part of the rotatable member illustrated in Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 5 is a section taken through the member illustrated when assembled onto a cable.
The rotatable member illustrated in the drawings takes the form of a control knob which includes a casing 1 having a central bore 2. The casing may be formed from aluminium. An annular track 3 is positioned about-the central bore 2. The track 3 includes a lower track 4 which typically extends over one third of the length of track 3. One side of the track is bordered by an upstanding collar 5 located about the bore 2, the other side being bordered by the internal wall of the casing 1. Steps 6 are defined between the lower and upper tracks 3,4 and a ball bearing 7 is positioned within the lower track 4. The ball bearing 7 is trapped within the track 4 by a lip 8 which extends inwardly from the internal wall of the casing.
The diameter of the ball bearing 7 is greater than the height of the steps 6 so that the upper portion of the bearing projects above the level of the floor of the track 3.
The two tracks 3,4 are covered by a cap 9 having a central bore 10 and an inwardly extending protrusion 11. The cap 9 does not rotate with the casing 1. The length of the protrusion 11 is such that, as the casing rotates, the protrusion moves around the track 3 and into engagement with the upper portion of the ball bearing 7.
As will be seen from Figure 5, an annular stud 12 secured to one end of a rotatable cable 14 locates within the bore 2 of the casing 1. The stud 12 is retained in position by a screw 15. The cap 9 locates between the stud 12 and the cable 14.
In use, rotation of the casing of the control knob imparts rotational movement to the internal wire of the cable 14 via the stud 12. As the casing 1 is rotated, so the stationary protrusion 11 makes contact with the ball 7 positioned in the track 4. The casing continues to rotate until the ball makes contact with one of the steps 6 whereupon further movement is prevented. It will be appreciated, therefore, that the control knob is able to turn through an angle in excess of 3600, the extent of such movement being dependent upon the length of the track 4.
For mechanisms such as vertical blinds sited within double glazing units, the ability to turn through an angle in excess of 360' is advantageous.
It will be understood that the foregoing is merely exemplary of rotational members in accordance with the invention and that modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scupe- of the invention.
