Abstract
A portable drawing board is attachable by clamps at the ends of telescopic foldable support arms to the arms of a tubular chair, and has a telescopic leg (not perceivable in Fig 5) depending from the opposite edge from which said arms proiect. When dismounted from the chair, both arms and leg can be folded to stow away parallel to the undersurface of the board. A sliding ruler is engaged by channels at its ends with the side edges of the board, and may be clamped by a set screw at its centre. The board may bear graduations, and may be provided with a lip along its lower edge for the retention of books or pencils. The board may alternatively be placed upon a table. <IMAGE>
Description
Improvements to multi purpose drawing and painting boards fixed to a folding chair or free standing.
I am aware that the idea of a drawing board fixed to a chair is not new. I myself have applied before for such patents No.8711323,8721838,8725652 but I think my present application has some novel ideas worth consideration.
The idea of a very light weight equipment is to enable any person especially aged or invalid to have the pleasure of using the equipment anywhere, including in the open air.
The board made of plywood or light composite material with measurements printed on its edges.
The board has a lip on its lower front edge along its width fixed at 900 for the purpose of holding something like a book, for example, or a pencil.
The board is equipped with a specially designed sliding ruler along its entire width, held on the board by the ruler's square shaped brackets at the two side edges of the board.
The special construction of the sliding ruler gives it the capacity to be held rigidly fixed on the board whenever it is required, leaving both hands free to go on working.
The "leg" support consists of 3 equal sized flat sections made of any suitable material fastened together one above the other and with the ability to slide and extend. They have narrow slots in them in their centre width position. The upper section is fixed to the board's undersurface by a hinge and has a bolt fixed through it in centre width position, corresponding with the slot in the section underneath it.The same is repeated between the second and third sections. The extension of the leg support is achieved by loosening and tightening the nuts.
The board can be fixed to the tubular framed folding chair by a pair of extendable constructions fixed on one end to the board's undersurface in a hinged manner at the board's lower front edge.
The other end by the intermediary of a clip either to the chair's front leg at its upper end,or to the horizontal front section.
When the board is not in use, the board's leg support as well as the clip constructions are folded back at the back of the board practically parallel with it and held in position by magnets, and the whole construction is parked out of sight at the back of the chair in a quasi vertical position fixed by the clips on to the upper horizontal part of the chair. Near the lower end the board is held safe in position by an elastic rope.
The clip construction together with the board's leg support, both of which are fixed in hinged manner provides the board with an ideal method of changing its position from horizontal when used as a table for eating at a picnic for example or indeed as a card table to practically any angled position according to need, for reading, drawing or painting.
The invention thus consists of the following parts.
Part a) The board
Part b) The special ruler construction
Part c) Tils twtn clip extentione Part d) The board's leg support
Now follows a detailed description of some of the parts, their relationships to each other, their method of construction, assembly and operation.
When neoessary references will be made to the accompanying drawings where:
FIG.1. Shows the tube clip structure in perspective.
FIG.2. Shows the extendable clip structure.
FIG.3. Is the perspective view of the sliding ruler from its
underside.
FIG.4. The sliding leg support.
FIG.5. The drawing board fixed to the folding chair.
Part a) The board is made of thin plywood with measurements printed on its edges in millimetres in black or red ink.
The board has a lip on its near front edge along its width fixed at 90. Its purpose is to hold something like a book for example or a pencil for reading.
Part b.) The special sliding ruler along the entire width of the board and held on the board by the square shaped brackets at the rulers ends and sliding along the two side edges of the board.
Fig.3.
The novelty of the sliding ruler is due to its special construction. At its centre position a nut is embedded. Its matching bolt has a thin round metal disc welded to its tip end.
The head of the bolt is round flat with a milled edge by which the sliding ruler is moved during its work. By practically one simple tightening turn of the bolt, the sliding ruler stops in its track and stays fixed by the pressure exerted on the board'
by the flat disc, leaving both hands free to go on working. By an anticlockwise loosening turn of the bolt, the ruler is again free to slide.
Part c.) The twin clip extensions by which the drawing board is fixed to the chair consists of two equal sized flat strips made of any suitable material fastened together one above the other and with the ability to slide and extend. The underneath strip is fixed to the clip by an angle bracket and has a bolt fixed through it in its centre width position corresponding to the narrow slot in the upper strip. This upper strip is fixed to the board's undersurface near to its front edge by a hinge. The extension is achieved by loosening the nut and bolt and sliding the strips apart. FIG.2.
Part d.) The board's leg support. It consists of three equal sized sections of plywood fastened together with the ability to slide and extend. The sections have narrow slots for part of their length in centre width position. The upper or outer section is fixed to the underside of the board near its far edge by a hinge. The sections are fastened together by nuts and bolts.Extensions is achieved by loosening and tightening of the nuts.
