Abstract

A molluscicidal preparation incorporates low concentrations of bendiocarb in a carrier base. The bendiocarb is used at concentration levels of less than 5 %w/w in the carrier which may be a bait material, such as any farinaceous compound, or an inert dust, such as china clay, chalk or talc. The bendiocarb may be used as the sole active ingredient, or the effectiveness may be improved with the addition of other active ingredients such as metaldehyde. Other compounds may be added for specific purposes, such as surfactants, dispersants, mould inhibitors and animal or bird repellants.

Description

MOLLUSCICIDES The present invention relates to molluscicides, and in particular to molluscicidal preparations incorporating bendiocarb as an active molluscicidal ingredient.
The use of bendiocarb as an insecticide is well known in the art, in particular used in high concentrations of between 20 and 95 46 for use in agricultural and domestic pest control in a number of forms. Typically, compositions of between 13 and 80% bendiocarb include other compounds such as carriers, dispersants and wetting agents to increase uptake by insects and assist application.
The insecticide is generally prepared as a wettable powder, dust or granule with a suitable inert base. In some cases it is diluted with water to produce a product for spray dispersion.
According to the present invention, it has been recognized that bendiocarb can be used in low concentration preparations satisfactorily as a molluscicide, suitable for both domestic and commercial agricultural use. In a preferred embodiment, concentrations of less than 5%w/w bendiocarb are used in both pelletted form with a suitable bait, and in powder form for dusting mollusc infested areas; either may be used to treat a specified locus prior to molluscs being present, or to treat an existing infestation.
The present invention therefore provides a molluscicide preparation comprising less than 5%w/w bendiocarb in a carrier base.
The present invention also provides a dust or powder-based molluscicide preparation comprising between O.SZw/w and 1.0%w/w bendiocarb.
In a first embodiment the present invention provides a pellet-based molluscicide preparation comprising between 3 %w/w and 5 %w/w bendiocarb in a farinaceous bait base.
In a second embodiment the present invention provides a pelletbased molluscicide preparation comprising between 0.1 %w/w and 3 %w/w bendiocarb in combination with between 2w/w and 7w/w metaldehyde or other active ingredient or ingredients in total in a farinaceous bait base.
In a third embodiment the present invention provides a prepressurised container (eg. "aerosol") formulation up to 3% bendiocarb either alone or in combination with any other molluscicide or molluscicides.
In a fourth embodiment the present invention provides a sprayable liquid or paste formulation containing up to 3% bendiocarb either alone or in combination with any other molluscicide or molluscicides.
In a fifth embodiment the present invention provides a powder concentrate up to 100% active ingredient as claimed in any of the preceding claims typically containing wetting agents and dispersants in combination with any other molluscicide or molluscicides.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example.
Bendiocarb is active against molluscs, particularly slugs and snails, alone or in combination with other pesticidal active ingredients. The use of other active ingredients eg. metaldehyde has been shown to be complementary and synergistic The inclusion of other materials can be of benefit in a number of ways, and these may include surfactants (eg.
emulsifiers and wetting agents) dispersants, baits, mould inhibitors and bird or animal repellants. The physical form of the molluscicidal product can be as a dust, a powder, a granule or a pellet containing various proportions of ingredients, generally up to 5 %w/w bendiocarb, or up to 3 %w/w bendiocarb in combination with up to 7%w/w metaldehyde.
In a first example, a molluscicidal preparation is formed as a dust, and comprises 0.5%w/w bendiocarb, and 99.5%w/w filler. The filler is any suitable non-reactive carrier material such as china clay, chalk or talc.
Best results are obtained when the product is composed of particles of small size not exceeding 30 microns diameter.
In a second example, a molluscicidal preparation such as that described in the first example above is improved by the addition of suitable surfactants and dispersants. In a preferred embodiment, the composition is: 0.5%w/w bendiocarb; 0.1%w/w calcium dodecyl benzene sulphonate; 0.05%w/w sodium lignosulphonate; and 99.35%w/w filler. The filler material is chosen in accordance with the first example above.
In a third example, the molluscicidal preparation is formulated as a bait, usually in the form of a pellet or granule. In a preferred embodiment, the composition is 5%w/w bendiocarb and 95%w/w bait base. The bait base may comprises any farinaceous material or other foodstuff, such as wheat, bran, barley, flour, biscuit meal or sugar. The bait may be further improved by the selective addition of yeasts and vegetable extracts.
The molluscicidal preparation need not be restricted to the use of bendiocarb as the sole active ingredient.
In a fourth example, bendiocarb is used in conjunction with another active ingredient such as metaldehyde. In a preferred embodiment, the formulation is: 3 %w/w bendiocarb; 6 %w/w metaldehyde; and 91 %w/w bait base. The bait base may be selected from the materials provided in the third example above.
In a fifth example, the molluscicidal preparation is improved by the addition of any or all of: mould inhibitors to prevent biological degradation; binding agents to improve pelleting; and repellants to deter birds or animals. In a preferred embodiment, the formulation is: 3 %w/w bendiocarb; 6%w/w metaldehyde; 0.25%w/w propionic acid; 0.5%w/w methyl nonyl ketone; 0.5 %w/w carboxy methyl cellulose; and 89.75%w/w bait base.
The product so made can be applied to a specific locus where plants are growing or may be desired to grow in order to provide protection against mollusc pests, or may be applied directly to molluscs which are already present.
In addition to metaldehyde other active ingredients may be used or substituted such as methiocarb, thiodicarb or aluminium sulphate.
It will be understood that all of the above examples are provided by way of illustration and the present invention is not limited by any of the above specific formulations.
