Description
Title - Rowing Machine
The present invention relates to a rowing machine.
Several types of rowing machine are known and have been marketed.
For example, US Patent No. 4,606,538 discloses a physical exercise device which comprises a base having a bracket at one end, a seat member detachably engaged with the base, a supporting frame having one end detachably engaged with the bracket, a handling means having a connecting plate, pivotally engaged to the other end of the supporting frame, and a hydraulic cylinder having one end pivotally connected to the supporting frame and the other end detachably connected to the connecting plate for producing hydraulic resistance. This structure of physical exercise device is not satisfactory in function because the user must bend the body heavily and then erect the trunk again during each stroke of rowing causing the user to tire quickly.
US Patent No. 4,621,623 discloses a multi-function gymnastic device which consists of a pedestal capable of being erected and two rocker components installed on the two sides of the pedestal and capable of being assembled horizontally when the pedestal is in an erect state so that the rocker components can be pushed and pulled to-and-fro for boat-rowing sports, up-and-down for chestexpanding sports, and moved for 3600 so as to be in keeping with each other to change the mode of sports and to achieve the effect of multi-function sports. The gymnastic device further comprises two hydraulic cylinders connected to the rockers to give hydraulic resistance. One drawback of this device is its complicated structure and high cost. Another drawback is that the hydraulic cylinders may produce different hydraulic resistance causing the player difficulty in moving the rockers evenly and smoothly.Still another drawback of this structure of gymnastic device is that the player must bend his/her trunk within a big angle during exercises, causing the belly to ache.
Chinese Patent No. 78,200,017 discloses a rowing machine which uses a flywheel to produce resistance. This structure of rowing machine is complicated and expensive, and does not eliminate the aforesaid drawbacks. Furthermore, the flywheel produces noise during the operation of the machine.
An object of the present invention is to provide a rowing machine which is simple in structure.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a rowing machine which is inexpensive to manufacture.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a rowing machine which is orientated in a sloping position to help the player exercise the body smoothly without causing the belly to ache.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a rowing machine which uses a first rope and a second rope respectively wound round a rotary wheel in reversed directions for boat-rowing sports, and a hydraulic cylinder to provide even hydraulic resistance to the rotary wheel.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a hydraulic cylinder holder to hold the rear end of the hydraulic cylinder which can be adjusted to move the hydraulic cylinder in either direction so that the tension of the first rope can be adjusted.
According to the present invention there is provided a rowing machine having an inclined seat comprising an elongated base frame supported between a front stand and a rear stand in an inclined position, a sliding seat mounted on said base frame, two foot boards bilaterally mounted on said front stand, a rotary wheel received in a slot on said elongated base frame and turned on an axle being fastened in said slot, a hydraulic cylinder holder mounted on said rear stand, a hydraulic cylinder the rear end of which is connected to said hydraulic cylinder holder and an actuating rod coupled at a front end moved to produce a hydraulic resistance, a first rope connected between said rotary wheel and said actuating rod, a second rope having one end connected to said rotary wheel and an opposite end coupled with a handle for pulling wherein said rotary wheel has a peripheral groove around the periphery thereof, two tubular flanges longitudinally aligned in the centre at two opposite sides and respectively mounted around said axle, a first through hole and a second through hole respectively disposed in parallel with said tubular flanges at two opposite locations, a wire hole imparting communication between said peripheral groove and said second through hole; said first rope is inserted through said first through hole, having two opposite ends respectively wound round said tubular flanges in the clockwise direction and then connected to said actuating rod; said second rope has one end inserted through said wire hole and retained in said second through hole, and an opposite end wound round said peripheral groove in the counter-clockwise direction and then coupled to said handle.
The invention will now be described further by way of example with reference to the annexed drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a rowing machine having an
inclined seat according to the preferred embodiment of
the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of part of the rowing machine
shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cutaway of the rotary wheel part shown in Figure
2;
Figure 4 is an exploded view of a link used in the rowing
machine of the present invention; and
Figure 5 is a side view in plain of the rowing machine shown in
Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, the rowing machine comprises an elongated base frame 20 supported in a sloping position on two stands 22 and 24 of different heights, a sliding seat 21 mounted on the elongated base frame 20 and releasably fixed at the desired location, two foot boards 26 bilaterally mounted on the front stand 22, an adjustable hydraulic cylinder holder 60 (Figure 4) mounted on the rear stand 24 to hold a hydraulic cylinder 30 below the base frame 20, and a rotary wheel 40 mounted on an axle 41 being transversely disposed within a slot 28 on the elongated base frame 20 near the foot boards 26.
Referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4 and Figure 1 again, the rotary wheel 40 has a peripheral groove 46 around the periphery thereof, two tubular flanges 42 and 43 longitudinally aligned in the centre at two opposite sides and respectively mounted around the axle 41, a first through hole 44 and a second through hole 45 disposed at two opposite locations, a wire hole 47 imparting communication between the peripheral groove 46 and the second through hole 45. A first rope 50 is inserted through the first through hole 44, having two opposite ends 52 and 54 respectively wound round the tubular flanges 42 and 43 in the same direction (the clockwise direction) and then connected to the actuating rod 32 of the hydraulic cylinder 30 through a link 60.
There is provided a second rope 70 having one end inserted through the wire hole 47 and retained in the second through hole 45, and an opposite end wound round the peripheral groove 46 in the counter-clockwise direction and then coupled to a handle 23.
Referring to Figure 5 and Figure 4 again, the hydraulic cylinder holder 60 comprises of a U-shaped mounting frame 61, a connecting frame 62, a pivot pin 63, and an adjustment nut 64. The mounting frame 61 is welded to the rear stand 24 at an inner side, having two elongated slots 67 alinged on two opposite ends thereof and spaced by a gap 65, and a through hole 66 alinged with a through hole (not shown) on the rear stand 24. The connecting frame 62 comprises a screw rod 68 at one end inserted through the through hole 66 on the mounting frame 61 and the aligned through hole on the rear stand 24 and screwed up with the adjustment nut 64, and two through holes 69 aligned on the forked front end thereof. The hydraulic cylinder 30 has an eye end 31 connected between the through holes 69 within the elongated slots 67 by the pivot pin 63.The actuating rod 32 of the hydraulic cylinder 30 is coupled to the two opposite ends 52 and 54 of the first rope 50. By turning the adjustment nut 64 in either direction, the position of the hydraulic cylinder 30 is adjusted relative to the rear stand 24 and therefore the tension of the first rope 50 is adjusted.
Referring to Figure 5 again, when the user sits on the seat 21 with the feet rested on the foot boards 26 and the hands holding the handle 23, the handle 23 is then pulled backwards toward the seat 21 to pull the second rope 70. When the second rope 70 is pulled backwards, the rotary wheel 40 is turned clockwise causing the tubular flanges 42 and 43 to take up the two opposite ends 52 and 54 of the first rope 50, and therefore the actuating rod 32 is pulled out of the hydraulic cylinder 30 (see Figure 5). When the handle 23 is released, the actuating rod 32 is moved back to its former position, causing the rotary wheel 40 turned counter-clockwise, and therefore the second rope 70 is wound back.
While only one embodiment of the present invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that various modifications and changes could be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
