Abstract
Apparatus for supporting and moving around an incapacitated or partially incpacitated person includes a frame 1 on which the person can be supported when the frame is in an upright position and a curved section 5b at the bottom of the frame, with wheels 11 spaced forwardly and apart from this curved section. From the rest position of the apparatus with the wheels off the ground the frame can be rotated forward about the curved section 5b in a rocking motion to bring the wheels in contact with the ground for moving the frame around (Figure 3 not shown). Knee supports 8, a trunk support 9, head support 16, and handles 17 are provided for the person. A foot plate 19 enables the operator of the trolley to tilt the trolley from the rest position. <IMAGE>
Description
Patient Support
This invention relates to apparatus for moving incapacitated or disabled patients, particularly from one location to another.
Hand operated and power operated lifting devices are known which involve physically lifting the patient but these are cumbersome and expensive and, if manually operated, labour intensive.
US Patent 5,093,944 discloses a mobile lift and transport apparatus for lifting and moving an incapacitated or partially incapacitated person from one place to another in a forwardly leaning and supported position. This apparatus is provided with a frame which has wheels mounted at the bottom around which it can pivot. The person to be moved is supported by suitable feet and trunk supports.
In use, the apparatus is placed near the incapacitated person and his feet placed on the feet supports and his legs and trunk placed against their supports. A brake has then to be applied to the wheels to prevent them moving and the apparatus is then pivoted around the wheels and the person is then supported by the apparatus and can be moved round.
It has been found in use that, unless the brake is applied properly, the apparatus will move whilst the person to be moved is being placed on the apparatus; also, it can be difficult to apply the brake and simultaneously pivot the wheels. This problem can be a hazard, as any release of the brake will cause the apparatus to move whilst not being properly balanced, i.e.
when the person is being lifted out of a seated position and over the fulcrum of the pivot.
I have invented apparatus which reduces these difficulties.
According to the invention, there is provided apparatus for moving an incapacitated or partially incapacitated person, which comprises a frame or column incorporating means to support a person when the frame is in a forwardly and downward leaning position, there being at the bottom of the frame or column a pivotal base section in contact with the ground about which the frame or column can rotate, there being at least two wheels spaced forwardly apart from the pivotal base section so that the frame can be rotated forwardly about the pivotal base section to bring the wheels into contact with the ground.
The terms forwardly and backwardly when used in this specification in relation to the apparatus, refer to the position relative to a person being supported on the frame or column.
The means of support for the patient is preferably comprised of feet, leg and trunk supports mounted on the frame at a comfortable position and capable of taking the full weight of the patient. The patient's feet are placed in the feet supports and the leg and trunk supports can then take the weight of the patient. Straps, securely anchored to the apparatus, pass around the patient and hold him in position.
The support means are positioned so that a patient can be placed on the apparatus with his feet, legs and trunk on the relevant supports; the patient is then substantially in the same position as if he were seated, so that when the apparatus is in a forwardly leaning position, his weight is supported by the various support means.
The pivotal base preferably contains one or more curved support sections and is mounted like a "rocker" on a rocking chair, so that at the bottom of the frame it can easily pivot or rock about these curved supports.
Preferably the pivotal base also has a section on which the apparatus can rest in a stable position, this section can be substantially flat or concave or can consist of two or morw spaced apart contact points so that the apparatus can rest stabily.
The wheels are spaced forwardly apart from the pivotal base at a distance and angle so that when the frame or column is in the 'rest' position, the wheels are off the ground and cannot move. When the frame or column is then forwardly rotated about the pivotal base, the wheels come into contact with the ground with the patient fully supported in the forwardly leaning position and the pivotal base then comes off the ground. The apparatus can then be wheeled around on the wheels.
In practice, a distance of 300 to 450mm between the axis of the wheels and the point of the base, has been found to be convenient.
Preferably there is a handle at the top end of the frame or column so that the apparatus can easily be moved and controlled by the operator.
Optionally, there can be separate supports for the patient's hands, i.e. in the form of handles which can be gripped.
Some disabled and partially disabled patients need to be placed in a different position from sitting or lying down, in order to exercise internal organs and to relieve pressure on certain parts of the body which normally support the patient. With the present apparatus, the patient can be supported on the frame and, with the flat portion of the pivotal base in contact with the ground and the weight taken on the base, the patient can be left in a relatively comfortable and supported stable position.
A further support for the head can be incorporated in the apparatus, if desired, to aid patients who require such support.
Preferably all the relative positions of the various supports can be adjustable to adapt the apparatus for the different sizes and weights of patients.
If desired, a work surface or tray can be attached to the frame or column at hand level, so that a patient in the apparatus can work or manipulate equipment placed there and thus remain occupied.
It is a feature of the apparatus of the invention that the apparatus is stable in use without the assistance of brakes or other motion preventing means, so that if the handle is inadvertently released in use, the apparatus automatically assumes a stable position.
The invention is further described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a side view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 shows a frontal view ofthe apparatus.
Fig. 3 shows the apparatus in use.
The apparatus consists of a central frame or column (1) having a sliding portion (2) fitting within it. The sliding portion (2) has handle (3) attached to it and can slide in frame or column (1) to adjust the height of the handle.
At the lower end of frame or column (1) is a base (4) attached to frame or column (1) by fixing (6a) and (6b). The base (4) has curved sections (5a) and (5b) and flat section (12) and end section (15).
Mounted on frame or column (1) are feet supports (7) which can be moved up and down on (1). Knee supports (8) and trunk support (9) are positioned as shown to take the weight of a patient. These supports are preferably padded. Support bar (10) has head support (16) and handles (17) attached to it.
The base (4) has wheels (11) mounted on it so that, in its 'rest' position, the base supports the apparatus and the wheels (11) are clear ofthe ground. In this position the apparatus is inherently stable. There is an operator's foot plate (19) - Fig. 2 - to enable the operator to tilt the apparatus and there are straps (20) - Fig. 3 - to hold the patient in place.
In use, a patient seated on a chair is placed in front of the apparatus and the apparatus is tilted forward about point (5a) so that position (15) of base (4) is in contact with the ground and the frame or column (1) is substantially vertical. The patient's feet are then placed in feet supports (7) and his knees placed against knee support (8), his chest placed against chest support (9) and head against head support (10). The patient is then strapped in by straps (20). The apparatus is then lowered back so that the flat portion (12) of base (4) is on the ground and the wheels (11) are clear of the ground.
In this position the apparatus is stable and the patient supported. The apparatus is then rotated about point (5b) by pressure of the operator's foot on footplate (19) until the weight is transferred to the wheels (11) and so can be moved about. If the handle (3) is released the apparatus automatically returns to its stable 'rest' position.
It can be seen that, whilst the apparatus is being rotated from its rest position, it is quite stable and the operator does not have to be concerned with braking the wheels as the base is in contact with the ground until the apparatus is in position to be moved.
