Abstract

The compositions formulated as e.g. a mouthwash, spray or a toothpaste comprise an oxidising agent in the form of at least one peroxo complex as its essential ingredient. The compositions may contain a mixture of complexes. Typical peroxocomplexes are persulphates, perborates, carbamate peroxide, percarbonates or peroxosulphates.

Description

Oral Care Products This invention relates to oral care products, a term which includes mouthwashes, toothpastes and oral sprays. Mouthwashes are liquid preparations intended to improve users' oral hygiene. In use they are decanted into a user's mouth, but not swallowed. They are dispersed in the mouth by violent agitation, so that the liquid passes over all the internal surfaces of the mouth, including the teeth and gums. The usual mouthwash contains a disinfecting agent, to cleanse the skin surfaces, and an agent intended to freshen the breath. Toothpastes are particularly employed to clean teeth by application to the bristles of a brush which is then used to remove food debris from between the teeth, and by gently abrading the teeth to remove stains and adherent films, such as of plaque.Mouthsprays are liquids which are sprayed under pressure in a fine spray into the open mouth to become deposited on the exposed surfaces of the cheeks, gums and teeth. The sprays become diluted by the saliva naturally present in the mouth, which saliva acts as a vehicle to bathe all the surfaces with the spray ingredients.
The present invention aims at providing an oral care product which, in addition to cleansing the internal surfaces of the mouth, also has a brightening or whitening effect on the teeth.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an oral care product which includes an oxidising agent in the form of one or more peroxocomplexes. Preferably a combination of at least two peroxocomplexes would be used, one fast- and one slow-acting.
The product in its liquid form may be sold as a mouthwash in such a diluted form as to be ready for use as sold. Alternatively, it may be concentrated to a greater extent, for either dilution prior to being used as usual, or for being sprayed in its undiluted form into the mouth so that the spray becomes diluted by saliva, to ensure that the concentration of the peroxocomplex(es) in the mouth remains below a maximum level. Alternatively, the product may be in the form of a toothpaste.
By a "peroxocomplex" it is meant, a compound or compounds which in use are capable of generating hydrogen peroxide (HzO2). Typical of such peroxide precursors (peroxo acid anims) are the following: perborate, persulphate, peroxomonosulphate, or addition complexes of HzOz with urea (e.g. carbamate peroxide) or sodium carbamate.
It has been found that incorporation of this oxidising agent has a surprising effect on the teeth, in that it results in the teeth becoming whiter. This is thought to be the result of any deposits of dark or yellowish material on or in the teeth, such as organic debris and/or plaque, being removed or bleached, so that the natural colour of the teeth can be seen more easily. The plaque and any food debris in the mouth are thought to be partially removed by the oxidising agent, in either liquid or solid form, by chemical interaction therewith.
In practice the product would contain additional ingredients to give it enhanced properties. In its commercial form, it is envisaged that the product would have the following composition: Ingredient Percentages Rane Preferred Sodium bicarbonate 0 or up to 40 0.2 - 40.0 Sodium fluoride 0 or up to 1.0 0.1 - 1.0 Sodium citrate 0 or up to 4.0 1.0 - 4.0 Bromelain 0 or up to 10 0.1 - 10 Papain 0 or up to 5 0.1 - 5.0 Triclosan 0 or up to 0.6 0.1 - 0.5 Zinc Chloride 0 or up to 1 0.5 - 1 Carbamate peroxide Up to 35 0.1-35 Pyrophosphate 0 or up to 10 0.2 - 10 Sodium peroxodisulphate 0 or up to 15 0.05 - 15 Sodium lauryl sulphate 0 or up to 3% 0-3 gum (e.g. cellulose or xanthum) 0 or up to 5% 0 - 5 When the product is a liquid, the percentages are by weight or volume, whereas when the product is a solid (as a paste), the percentages are weight over weight.
When the product is in its liquid form, as either a mouthwash or spray, then the above composition would have deionised water added to it to bring it to the desired concentration.
In a preferred embodiment, a toothpaste may have the following basic composition: Ingredient Percentage Sodium bicarbonate 0.2 - 40.0 Triclosan 0.1-0.5 Sodium fluoride 0.1-1.0 Sodium citrate 1.0 - 4.0 Zinc chloride 0.75 Bromelain (1600 units/g) 0.1 - 10.0 Papain 0.1-5.0 Carbamate peroxide up to 35.0 Pyrophosphate 0.2 - 10.0 Sodium peroxodisulphate 0.05 - 15.0 The hydrogen ion concentration (pH) value of the toothpaste is about 6.5, to ensure stability before use, and to not demineralise tooth tissue.
In yet a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the composition of a toothpaste may be Ingredient Percentage Calcium hydrogen phosphate 40.0 Sorbitol 10.0 Glycerol 14.0 Inzeredient Percentage Sodium lauryl sulphate 1.0 Sodium bicarbonate 0.3 Pyrophosphate 1.0 Sodium peroxodisulphate 0.2 Sodium saccharin 0.5 Triclosan 0.3 Sodium fluoride 0.32 Methyl paraben 0.12 Sodium citrate 2.60 Citric acid 0.08 Zinc chloride 0.75 Xylitol 2.0 Riboflavin 0.006 Bromelain 0.5 Papain 0.125 Carbamate peroxide 0.3 Titanium dioxide 0.8 Xanthum gum 1.2 Peppermint flavour 2.0 Water balance to 100% The oxidising peroxo complexes are preferably sodium persulphate; sodium perborate monohydrate; potassium peroxomonosulphate; carbamate peroxide, or sodium percarbonate. It is envisaged that it would be particularly advantageous to use carbamate peroxide (which is a fast oxidiser) in combination with the slower-acting sodium peroxodisulphate or perborate adducts. The peroxo complexes of this invention may be used in the form of a mouthwash with disinfectant and cleansing properties, and with the additional advantage of improving the appearance of the teeth significantly, and without brushing. For this purpose the above composition would be dissolved in an appropriate amount of deionised water.
