Abstract
A cardboard carton, particularly for housing a gift, includes a cover panel 10 hinged for movement between open and closed positions relative to the carton body, an intermediate panel 13 shaped to represent the carton contents and connected so as to lie between the cover panel and the carton body when the cover panel is closed but to be lifted to a position spaced away from the carton body by opening of the cover panel, and a flap 15 for carrying a message connected to the inside of the cover panel and arranged to lie behind the said intermediate panel when the cover panel is closed but to move out from behind the intermediate panel upon opening of the cover panel. <IMAGE>
Description
"Cartons"
This invention relates to cartons made of cardboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material. Such cartons are often used to carry a gift, and it is an object of the present invention to provide such a carton which is particularly adapted to incorporate a message which is usually required to accompany a gift.
According to the invention there is provided a carton made of cardboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, particularly for housing a gift, including a cover panel hingedly mounted for movement between open and closed positions relative to the carton body, an intermediate panel connected to the inside of the cover panel and to the carton body in such manner as to lie between the same when the cover panel is closed but to be lifted to a position spaced away from the carton body by opening movement of the cover panel, and a flap for carrying a message connected to the inside of the cover panel and arranged to lie at least partially behind the said intermediate panel when the cover panel is closed but to be moved out from behind the intermediate panel by opening movement of the cover panel.
Thus upon opening of the cover panel by the recipient of a gift housed in the carton, the flap for carrying a message automatically comes out from behind the intermediate panel, so as to attract the attention of the recipient. The said flap may be arranged to carry a message in any convenient way. In one form it may simply provide a surface on which a message may be written. Alternatively it could be formed as a pocket for receiving a greetings card.
In use, as the cover panel is being opened, the said flap will be held facing towards the recipient at least for part of its movement out from behind the intermediate panel, by virtue of its continued engagement with the latter. Preferably, indeed, the arrangement is such that when the cover panel is fully open the said flap is still partially engaged behind the intermediate panel, so that the flap faces towards a person opening the cover panel throughout the opening thereof.
Preferably the arrangement is such that, as the cover panel is being opened, the said flap is initially held behind the said intermediate panel by its engagement with the latter but then, upon further opening movement of the cover panel, springs out from behind the intermediate panel. This effect may be achieved by arranging that an edge of the said flap catches behind a corner of the said intermediate panel during the opening movement of the cover panel and is temporarily held by such corner before springing past the same.
In a convenient form of the invention the said cover panel is of double thickness, comprising first and second panel members of which the first is hinged to the carton body and the second is folded back and secured to the first to form the inside surface of the panel, and wherein both the said intermediate panel and the said flap are hinged to the said second panel member at or adjacent its edge remote from the hinge between it and the first panel member. Other arrangements could of course be employed, however, such as forming the said intermediate panel and/or the said flap as separate members glued or otherwise secured in place.
In a preferred form of the invention the said intermediate flap is formed to have the same outline shape as an article to be housed in the carton, for example a bottle.
The scope of the invention also extends to a blank of cardboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, cut and scored for making a carton as set forth above.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cardboard blank for making a carton according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the erected carton, with part of the cover panel broken away;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the erected carton with the cover panel partly open; and
Figure 4 is a similar perspective view but showing the cover panel fully open.
Referring first to Figure 1, a cardboard blank for forming a carton for housing a bottle comprises four side wall forming panels 1 to 4 for forming the side walls of an elongate rectangular carton. Arrays of top and bottom forming closure flaps 5 and 6 are hinged to the ends of the wall panels and are of a conventional nature not requiring further description. A gluing panel 7, adapted to be folded over about a medial hinge line to form a double thickness gluing flap, is provided at one end of the row of side wall panels.
Two panel members 8 and 9 for forming a double thickness cover panel 10 are provided at the other end of the row of wall forming panels, the outer one of these 9 being arranged to be folded over onto the inside surface of the inner one 8 to make up the cover panel.
A locking tab 11 is released from the panel member 9, adjacent the hinge line between the panel members, for engagement with the body of the carton when the cover panel 10 is closed.
Hingedly connected to the outer edge of the panel member 9, by means of an intermediate strip 12, is an intermediate panel 13 having the outline shape of a bottle. Also hingedly connected to the panel member 9, adjacent its outer edge, and by way of a fold line 14 extending at an oblique angle to that edge, is a flap 15 for receiving a message.
To erect the carton from the blank of Figure 1 the rectangular body is formed up in the conventional manner from the wall panels 1 to 4 and the top and bottom closure flaps 5 and 6. The cover panel 10 is then formed by folding over the outer panel member 9 onto the inner one 8 and gluing them together. The intermediate panel 13 is then positioned by folding back the strip 12 and gluing it to the adjacent face of the panel member 9, and the intermediate panel is also hingedly connected to the wall panel 4 by means of a gluing tab 16 released from the latter. As a result the intermediate panel 13 is received between the wall panel 1 and the cover panel 10, and the message flap 15 is similarly received between the intermediate panel 13 and the wall panel 11 as illustrated in Figure 2.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, as the cover panel 10 is opened the intermediate panel 13 is lifted away from the wall panel 1 and at the same time the cover panel pulls the message flap 15 out from behind the intermediate panel until, in the fully opened position of the cover flap as shown in Figure 4, the message flap is fully visible. During this movement there is a period when, as seen in Figure 3, the top edge 17 of the message flap catches behind the top corner 18 of the intermediate flap, the result of which is that the movement of the message flap is temporarily obstructed but then, upon further urging by the opening movement of the cover panel, it eventually springs past the corner 18, to reveal itself to the person opening the carton. It will be noted however that the message flap continues to be partially engaged behind the top end region of the intermediate panel throughout the opening movement of the cover panel so that it continues to face the person opening the carton throughout the opening movement of the cover panel. As a result, a message written on the message flap remains visible to the recipient, even when the cover panel has been fully opened.
Claims (9)
1. A carton made of cardboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, particularly for housing a gift, including a cover panel hingedly mounted for movement between open and closed positions relative to the carton body, an intermediate panel connected to the inside of the cover panel and to the carton body in such manner as to lie between the same when the cover panel is closed but to be lifted to a position spaced away from the carton body by opening movement of the cover panel, and a flap for carrying a message connected to the inside of the cover panel and arranged to lie at least partially behind the said intermediate panel when the cover panel is closed but to be moved out from behind the intermediate panel by opening movement of the cover panel.
