Abstract

A latching apparatus comprises a support 3 for supporting a device 1 such as a vacuum contactor and a latch 4, 5, 6 on the support 3 for fastening the support 3 to the device 1. The latch comprises a spring 4 attached at one end to the support 3 and having a handle 6 at its other end. An upstanding pin 5 on the spring 4 is engageable with a first hole 7 in the device 1 in a first position of the device 1 and with a second hole 8 in the device 1 in a second position of the device 1. The device 1 is guided during movement between the first and second positions by guide brackets 2. <IMAGE>

Description

LATCH The present invention relates to a latch and finds particular, but not exclusive, application to use with a vacuum contactor which is to be removed from its normal operative position with a contactor frame for servicing, for example.
The present invention provides an apparatus comprising a device means; a support means, upon which said device means rests; and a latching means, on said support means, for fastening said support means to said device means.
The apparatus may include a guide means on said support means for aligning the position of said device means and bracing said device means so that said device means may be offset from said support means while remaining braced by said support means.
Preferably, the latching means and device means are configured so that the device means is latchable in a non-offset position and an offset position relative to the support means. This provides, in the case of a vacuum contactor for example, a simple latching mechanism which can be used to hold the contactor in the drawn out position while the contactor is being serviced.
The latching means may have a first side attached to said support means and a flexible second side, comprising a pin means on the second side of said latching means; and an aperture means in said device means for fastening said device means with said support means by inserting said pin means through said aperture means.
Conveniently, such an apparatus has a handle means on the second side of said latching means, for displacing said latching means and thus said pin means.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side view of the embodiment.
A contactor frame 1 is slidably supported within a contactor support 3 so it can be moved from its normal operative position, which is as shown in Figure 1, to an offset position by moving the frame 1 forwards as indicated by the direction arrow in the figure.
Guide brackets 2, of which one is shown, aligns the frame 1 for movement between the offset and non-offset position and also braces the frame 1 in the offset position.
A latching mechanism is attached to the underside of the support 3, in the orientation of the figure. The latch comprises a piece of spring steel 4 attached at a first end or side to the support 3 and an upstanding pin 5 fixed towards the second end or side of the spring steel 4. A handle 6 in the form of a vertically extending plate 6A with a horizontally extending arm 6B projecting forwardly from the top of the plate 6A is also attached to the second end or side of the spring steel 4.
The pin 5 in the normal position of the latch engages with a first hole 7 in frame 1 so retaining the frame in its normal operating position (as shown in Figure 1). When the handle 6 is manually depressed the pin 5 is pulled from the hole 7 allowing the frame 1 to move to an offset position.
A second hole 8 in the contactor frame 6 is located in the frame 1 so as to be engageable with the pin 5 when in a selected offset position, at which point the spring force of the latch pushes the pin 5 up into the second hole 8, stopping the contactor frame 1 from coming out of the enclosure onto the floor. The latch can then be operated again if complete removal of the contactor frame 1 is desired or to move it back to the operating position.
A benefit of this embodiment is that one can take a stationary vacuum contactor (with the holes 7 and 8 already present) and without modification to that contactor further provide the above described two positions latching and bracing by modification to the contactor support 3.

Claims (7)

1. An apparatus comprising a) a device means; b) a support means, upon which said device means rests; and c) a latching means, on said support means, for fastening said support means to said device means.
2. The apparatus of Claim 1 comprising a guide means on said support means for aligning the position of said device means and bracing said device means so that said device means may be offset from said support means while remaining braced by said support means.
3. The apparatus of Claim 1 or 2, wherein said latching means has a first side attached to said support means and a flexible second side, comprising a) a pin means on the second side of said latching means; and b) an aperture means in said device means for fastening said device means with said support means by inserting said pin means though said aperture means.
4. The apparatus of Claim 3 comprising a handle means on the second side of said latching means, for displacing said latching means and thus said pin means.
5. The apparatus of any preceding claim wherein said device means is a vacuum contactor.
6. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim in which the latching means and device means are configured so that the device means is latchable in the non-offset position and an offset position relative the support means.
7. An apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
