Description

- -. 'I 1 2288444 PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PLAIN BEARING BUSHES The
invention relates to a process for the production of bonded-fibre plain bearing bushes.
US 3.361.502 discloses a plain bearing bush which can be loaded both radially and axially. Plain bearing layers are applied to a supporting material which is at first flat, the layers then being processed and moved into their operational configuration by the deformation of the supporting material. That process is expensive and it must be expected that the plain bearing layers will be damaged during deformation.
It is also known to produce preferably radially loaded plain bearing bushes by the winding of plastics fibres which are impregnated with bonding agent and then cured.
It is an object of the invention to provide a process for the production of plain bearing bushes by which the bushes can be cheaply provided with radially- and axially-facing bearing surfaces without excessive rejects during manufacture.
According to the invention there is provided a process for the production of bonded-fibre plain bearing bushes having a bearing layer with radiallyand axially-facing bearing surfaces and a supporting structure bonded to the bearing layer, characterised by - winding fibres for the bearing layer so as to form an axiallyextending sleeve-shaped winding for providing the radially-facing surface; winding said fibres so as to form a flange-shaped winding for providing the axially-facing surface; winding fibres for the supporting structure over the bearing layer fibres; and curing the whole winding, impregnated with a bonding agent.
Production is performed, for example, on a mandrel having the diameter of the subsequent sliding surface. An axially extending sleeve-shaped winding of a sliding fibre impregnated with epoxy resin is applied to the mandrel, whereafter a narrow axial zone of the same fibre is wound rising radially 2 upwards, the immediate result being a sleeve-shaped winding having a flange attachment. Then in the same manner the supporting layer of a resinimpregnated glass fibre is wound which supports both the radial and the axial sliding layer. The sliding layer and supporting layer can be further processed after curing.
Advantageously, the plain bearing bush according to the invention need no longer be deformed, so that the sliding layers remain undamaged. The steady transition between the axial and radial sliding layers and the uniform transition-free connections to the supporting layer produce an overall stable and particularly durable construction.
These and further features will now be described merely by way of example with reference to the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, which show:
Fig. 1 - the winding of a semi-finished product of a number of succeeding plain bearing bushes having axial and radial sliding layers; and Fig. 2 a separated plain bearing bush as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 shows a mandrel 1 on to which a two-layer composite fibre tube is wound which in a further step is divided into individual plain bearing bushes, as shown in Fig. 2.
First of all an axially continuous winding 2, 3 of epoxy-impregnated sliding fibre is applied to the mandrel 1. The winding consists of sleeveshaped portions 2 of small wall thickness and flange-shaped portions 3 of small axial width. The entire winding is continuously wound on to the entire length of the mandrel 1. The flange-shaped portions are of tapering or beadshaped cross-section having a relatively wide base so as to give satisfactory support to the radially-outer windings of the flange-shaped portions.
In a further operational step a supporting layer 4 of epoxy-impregnated glass fibre is wound on. The winding technique is so controlled that more material is applied to the sleeve-shaped portions 2 than to the flangeshaped portions 3. In this case also winding is continuous.
The result is an intimate bonding of the layers 1, 2, 3 which, more particularly in the transition zone 5 to the flange-shaped portions 3, forms the C_ 3 necessary stability for the subsequent axial sliding layer.
When the semiAnished product has cured, individual plain bearing bushes are separated at the places 6 bound by chain lines. The result is an axial sliding layer in the form of a radial end face 7 of the individual plain bearing bushes which remains after separation, as shown in Fig. 2. The remainder 6 of the flange-shaped portion between the chain lines is removed by machining.
As shown in Fig. 2, the supporting layer has also been removed, the overall result being an L-shaped cross-section.
Each feature disclosed in this specification (which term includes the claims) andlor shown in the drawings may be incorporated in the invention independently of other disclosed andlor illustrated features.
The appended abstract as filed herewith is included in the specification by reference.
