Abstract
A storage system has two series of spaced parallel members (11, 12), the members of the first series being at right-angles to the members of the second series and at least some of the members of the first series being displaced in the direction of their length relative to the adjacent member of the first series. The arrangement is such as to form a series of rectangular compartments whose sides are formed by two adjacent members of the first series and two adjacent members of the second series. <IMAGE>
Description
STORAGE SYSTEMS
This invention relates to storage systems. A conventional storage system comprises a grid of horizontal shelves provided with supports, the whole forming a generally rectangular outline shape. The present invention differs in providing a storage system in which the general outline is of parallelogram shape in which the angle of the parallelogram is not equal to a right-angle.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a storage system comprising a first series of spaced parallel members, a second series of spaced parallel members, the members of the first series being at rightangles to the members of the second series, at least some members of the first series being displaced in the direction of their length relative to the adjacent member of the first series, the arrangement of the members being such as to form a series of rectangular compartments whose sides are formed by two adjacent members of the first series and two adjacent members of the second series.
Preferably the members of the second series on one side of a given member of the first series are displaced in the direction of the length of the members of the first series relative to the members of the second series on the other side of said given member of the first series. Preferably each member of the second series extends only between two adjacent members of the first series. Preferably the spacing of the members of the first series is uniform.
Preferably members of the first series extend beyond members of the second series at at least one end of the members of the first series. Preferably each member of the first series is provided with fixing means extending at right-angles to the length of the member of the first series, each member of the second series being provided with a longitudinal aperture into which the fixing means may fit. Preferably each member of the second series is provided with gripping means for gripping a fixing means inserted into its aperture.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a storage system comprising a first series of spaced parallel members and a second series of spaced parallel members, at least some of the members of the first series being provided with orthogonally projecting fixing means in spaced rows extending at right-angles to the length of the members in two groups, one on each side of the member, the rows of the first group being displaced in the direction of the length of the first members in relation to the means of the second group, adjacent members of the first series being secured together by means of the fixing means and of members of the second series.
In either aspect the system is modular, in that members can be added to the first or second series to extend the system. The system can therefore be arranged to fit a variety of locations and applications.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a storage system and
Figure 2 is a detail of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of another version of the storage system.
The storage system illustrated in Figure 1 comprises seven equal spaced support members 11, fifteen units in length, eighteen spaced shelving members 12 and fixing means for securing the components together. The members define two staggered rows of rectangular containers 13, each rectangular container being six units long by three units wide, together with open-topped rectangular containers 14 above the upper shelving members. The members can be of any suitable material such as chipboard and timber, but preferably comprise medium density fibreboard (MDF).
Fixing lugs 33 are screwed into each side of each support member 11 (except on the outside of the outside members) in three spaced rows of two fixing lugs to a row at the positions of the shelving members 12, so that for the intermediate support members, the rows on one side are displaced along the length of the support members in relation to the rows on the other side by two units and four units alternately on either side of the support member. The outside support members 11 have fixing lugs 33 on one side only.
Each shelving member extends only between two adjacent support members and is drilled with longitudinal holes 31 to receive the fixing lugs, together with transverse threaded holes 32 extending into the longitudinal holes 31. The lug 31 has a circumferential groove 35 at the position of the hole 32 when the two members 11 and 12 abut. A locking screw 36 is screwed into the hole 32 and engages the groove 35 to prevent the lug 33 being withdrawn from the hole 31. When the fixing lugs are thus locked in position, the assembly becomes rigid. Figure 2 shows the joint of a support member and a shelving member in detail. Suitable lugs and associated components are marketed by Hafele under the name
fo /ifix 15.
The storage system illustrated in Figure 1 can be mounted on a wall extending parallel to the plane of the figure and a particularly useful arrangement would be for the system to be secured to the wall of a stairwell. The illustrated system would particularly suit a stairwell in which the staircase rose by two units for every three units of horizontal extent, since then the relative displacement of the rectangles would keep pace with the rising stairs.
An alternative arrangement for the system would be laid on a horizontal floor with the bottom left-hand corner of the lower staggered row of rectangles extending in a horizontal line as illustrated in Figure 3. Such a storage system is particularly useful for storage of tall floppy objects such as magazines which can then rest against the support members as well as having their bottom edges supported by the shelving members. The locking of the fixing lugs 33 in the shelving members 12 keeps the storage system from collapsing from its rectangular grid pattern under the force of gravity while being supported on the floor from the bottom left-hand corners of the unit as seen in Figure 1.
The particular shape of the rectangular compartments and the relative displacement of adjacent rectangles in a staggered row can be varied according to application and choice. Although it is preferable for every rectangle to be displaced in relation to the rectangles on the other sides of the supporting members which define it, it would be possible for some adjacent rectangles to be aligned on either side of a supporting member and only some adjacent pairs of rectangles to be relatively displaced along the length of the supporting member separating them.
