Abstract

An assembly for the drainage of water from a shower tray comprises, in combination, a sensor producing an output signal in response to the detection of a person situated in the shower and a pump for removal of water from the shower tray and means for operating the pump in response to the output signal from the sensor.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SHOWER DRAINAGE The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to drainage of water from showers and similar areas.
Tt is known to provide a pump to assist in the drainage of water from a shower (see our IJK Patent Applications No.
9305875.8 and 9305876.6). It is easy for the user of the shower to forget to turn off the power to the pump after showering. This is particularly a problem with mixer showers which divert water supplied to the bath taps to a shower head (whereas with an electric shower the pump operating switch can be incorporated into the electric shower controls).
Itowever. where a drainage pump is installed where an electric shower has already been installed, a single switch operating both the pump and the shower is not possible and so the same probe as with a mixer shower arises.
According to the present invention there is provided for use in a shower or similar area, in combination. a sensor producing an output signal in response to the detection of a person in the shower, a pump for removal of water froni the shower and means for operating the pump in response to the output signal from the sensor.
Preferably, the output from the sensor is passed to a radio wave transmitter which transmits a signal to a receiver, the receiver then providing an output signal to actual the pump.
The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described in further detail by way of example only by reference to an embodiment of a system in accordance with the present invent ion.
In one embodiment, a complete system in accordance with the present invention includes a sensor, for example an infra-red sensor or photoelectric sensor, positioned in relationship to the shower area such that when the user of the shower enters the shower area their presence is detected by the sensor. In a simple embodiment, the sensor produces an electrical output signal which either directly or through a relay causes a pump connected to the water outlet of the shower to be started.
In a preferred embodiment, the output from the sensor is converted into a radio signal and transmit Led to a receiver, the received signal heiiig converted into an electric signal to actuate the pump, again either directly or via a relay.
By use of relays and/or radio control the electrical components taking a 240 @@@@ mains supply can be installed outside the bathroom or sFltlwer room where contact with water can otherwise be a risk. The sensor and pump need only be provided with a low voltage supply, typically, 24 volts or less, and thus the risk of electric shock in the bathroom is reduced.
The sensor and transmitter components may be battery operated or operated from mains supply, either directly or at a stepped-down voltage.
in use, the sensor continues to monitor the presence of a person in the shower area, the pump continuing to run in response to a continued signal therefrom. When the person showering steps out of the shower or bath, the sensor detects this and the signal to the pump is stopped. Alternatively a delay, typically five to fifteen seconds, may be built in to the system by means of a timer, such that the pump continues to operate after the person has left the shower in order to (nsure that water in the shower or bath is completely drained sway.
The components in the system of the present invention can also he arranged to provide that the output from the sensor.
in add it ion to triggering the operation of the pump. also causes the start up of an electric shower.
The system in accordance with the present invention can either be provided as a complete system or, where certain features of the complete system are already installed, as individual components to complete the system.
