Abstract

An adaptable box (1) for the mounting of electrical devices is disclosed. The box is constructed of metal and has a wall (6, 7) extending upwardly from a base member (5). A lid (3) is provided to seal the box. A plurality of earth wires from the various electrical devices are connected to an earthing strip (11). The strip (11) is pressed inwardly from one of the side walls. The wires are attached by means such as thread forming screws or nuts and bolts. <IMAGE>

Description

CONDUIT FITTING This invention relates to an adaptable box for mounting electrical devices, such as a terminal box or junction box, of the kind which is constructed from metal and in which a mouth defined by the open end of a wall upstanding from a base is adapted to be closed by a removable metal lid.
Boxes of the kind set forth are provided with an earth wire connection, normally in the form of a bolt screwed through a lug pieced from, or otherwise co-operating with, the base of the box. When several wires are to be earthed, difficulty is experienced in connecting all the earth wires to the single earth wire connection due to the substantial total volume of the wires to be accommodated under a relative small lug.
According to our invention, in an adaptable box of the kind set forth an elongate earthing strip projecting inwardly from the upstanding wall is provided with a plurality of earth connections.
This enables separate earth wires individually to be connected to the box at different locations, thereby facilitating the installation of plurality of earth wires.
When the box is of rectangular outline and of pressed metal the strip may be pressed inwardly from a side or end section of the upstanding wall, and may extend substantially between opposite ends of that section.
Conven'iently the strip is inclined inwardly and downwardly from the outer edge of the said section of the wall.
The earthing connections comprises suitable fastenings, for example nuts and bolts, or thread forming screws, co-operating with the plurality of longitudinally spaced openings in the strip.
One embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the single Figure of the accompanying drawings which is a perspective view of an adaptable box for mounting electrical devices.
The adaptable box illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a pressed metal body 1, suitably of stainless steel having an upper, open, mouth 2 adapted to be closed by an detachable lid 3, also of pressed stainless steel. The mouth 2 is defined by the open outer end of a continuous peripheral wall 4 which is upstanding from an oblong rectangular base 5 and which comprises spaced parallel end wall portions 6, and side wall portions 7. The outer edges of the side wall portions 6 and 7 are contiguous with inturned flanges which define a continuous lip 9 lying in a plane parallel with a plane containing the base 5. Tapped holes 10 in the four corners of the lip 9 are adapted to receive screws by means of which the lid 3 is secured to the body 1 to close the mouth 2.
The flange extending inwardly from the outer edge of one of the side wall portions 7 is also extended inwardly by a further distance to define an inwardly directed portion which is deformed inwardly at an acute angle with respect to the side wall portion 7 to form an elongate earthing strip 11. The strip 11 is provided with a plurality of openings to form earth connections. Conveniently the openings are arranged in three sets, 12, 13, and 14, containing two, three, and two, openings respectively.
Earthing wires, (not shown), can be attached to the earthing strip by suitable fastening means, conveniently nuts and bolts, or thread forming screws, co-operating with the openings. By inclining the earthing strip 11 as described above, screw driver access into the box is not impeded by the presence of the opposite side wall portion 7, and the blade of the screw driver can be applied to the fastening means in an axial direction.

Claims (9)
