Description
2287875 A Childs Safetv Seat The present invention relates to a childs
safety seat. In particular the present invention is concerned with attaching a childs safety seat in position in the vehicle using a adult seat belt and incorporating means of routing the webbing of the adult seat belt through the safety seat.
The present invention is particularly concerned with a childs safety seat in which a seat member of the safety seat is adjustable so that the seat member can be reclined and in which the adult seat belt is located so as to avoid contact between the adult seat belt, the seat member or the safety harness for the child which is arranged on the seat portion of the safety seat.
The present invention further seeks to provide a means of attaching a childs safety seat in a vehicle so as to avoid contact between the safety seat, the locking tongue belt buckle of the adult seat belt or the anchorage of the locking tongue usually known as the buckle, with the safety seat.
The present invention further seeks to provide a means of locating the adult seat belt as f ar f rom the back of the car seat so that the amount of f orward movement of the saf ety seat is restricted to as small an amount as possible.
Accordingly the present invention provides a childs safety seat comprising a base member and a seat member, the seat member being either f ixed to or adjustably mounted on the base member, the seat being securable in position in a vehicle using an adult seat belt, the diagonal and lap portions of the adult seat belt being located in a channel in the back of the base member, the channel including a first member located between the adult seat belt and the seat member, and a second member located at a distance above the bottom of the base member suf f icient to avoid contact between the locking tongue and the buckle of the adult seat belt and the safety seat.
The first m ember can comprise an upstanding wall extending across a section of the width of the base member.
The second member can comprise a shelf joined to the first member.
The shelf can extend over substantially the whole width of the base member and can have a generally flat central section and slopping section on each side of the central section.
il 1 00.
The channel can include a third member which extends generally across the width of the base member and form together with the second member and the first member a closed channel.
The first member can be narrower in width than the third member.
The height of the second member is at least equal to the assembled length of the buckle and an anchorage f or the adult seat belt.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a childs safety seat in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows the seat of figure 1 in the direction of arrow A secured to the front seat of a vehicle but omitting the seat member; and Figure 3 shows the seat of figure 1 secured to the rear seat of a vehicle.
Figure 1 shows a childs safety seat (10) comprising a base -member (12) and a seat member (14) which is adjustably mounted on the base member. The base member (12) has a back portion (12A) which includes a channel (16) def ined by a f irst member (18) in the form of a wall, a second member (20) in the form of a shelf and a third member (22) which extends generally across the width of the base member and form together with the second and first members a closed channel.
In order to secure the safety seat (10) in position on a seat (24) of a vehicle, diagonal portion (26A), lap portion (26B) and locking tongue (26C) of an adult seat belt (26) are passed through the channel (16), and the locking tongue (26C) is secured to a buckle (28) on a short end anchorage.
As will be seen particularly in figures 2 and 3 the lap portion (26B) rests on the shelf (20) and both the diagonal portion and lap portion are separated f rom the seat member (14) of the childs safety seat by the wall (18). Thus the wall (18) prevents the adult seat belt from coming into contact either with the seat member (14) or the childs saf ety harness which is attached to the seat member (14) in order to restrain the child.
The relative position of the shelf (20) with respect to the back of the seat (24) and the squab of the seat (24) is important.
The height of the shelf above the squab of the vehicle seat (24) is chosen so that neither the locking tongue (26C) nor the buckle (28) is in contact with any part of the safety seat (10). If the 1 v r locking tongue (26) or the buckle (28) were to be in contact then the attachment of the safety seat (10) to the vehicle would be less secure and there would be rubbing between the locking tongue (26C), the buckle (28) and the base member (12), which is undesirable. If the locking tongue or the buckle were to be in contact with the base member then upon tensioning the web would not lie on the shelf and there would be a bending load applied to the connection between the tongue and the buckle.
The position of the shelf (20) forward of the back of the vehicle seat (24) is chosen so as to be as great as possible in order to keep to a minimum any forward movement of the safety seat under load.
Figure 2 shows a base member (12) without the seat member (14) secured in position on the front seat of a vehicle.
Figure 3 shows the base member (12) in position on the rear seat of a vehicle.
In both cases it will be noticed that neither the locking tongue (26C) nor the buckle (28) are in contact with the base member (12). In the case of securing the safety seat (10) on the rear seat of a vehicle the buckle (28) and associated webbing tends to be rather long and therefore the height of the shelf (20) above the squab of the rear seat has to be suf f icient so that the 1 locking tongue (26C) and the buckle (28) are not in contact with the base member (12).
The third member (22) guides the diagonal portion and the lap portion of the adult seat belt away from the vehicle seat to a forward most position. The first member (18) deflects the diagonal portion and the lap portion away from the seat member (14) to avoid contact between the adult seat belt (26) and the rear end of the seat member (14). It will be appreciated that on the back of the seat member (14) there will be buckles, attachments or other fittings of the harness to restrain a child in the seat member. It is important that the adult seat belt and these fixings do not interfere with each other.
