Abstract

A sealing arrangement for the stem of a gate valve comprises a packing having carbon braided wiper rings 2, 4 and graphite formed sealing rings 3. A load is applied to the packing by a disc-spring arrangement 2, 4. The rings of the packing may have different densities. The rings may be formed by pressing in a die using a hydraulic press. Tests on such a sealing arrangement in a valve rated at 150 psi (1.0MPa) and pressurised to 1800 psi (12.4MPa) did not show any leakage. The sealing arrangement is suitable for valves used in paper mills, ships, oil refineries and steam generators. <IMAGE>

Description

BAY VALVE This invention relates to the stuffing box packing and the action of disc springs to compress the packing on gate valves.
The traditional gate valve has a braided type or asbestos packing in the stuffing box which is held captive by a retaining plate.During use the valve leaks through the packing on average every 6 months.
The new type of packing is under a constant load so as the wear takes place,pressure on the packing causes the re-sealing of the packing stopping the leak.
The packing put into the valve involves graphite die formed rings of specific densities,with carbon braid to act as a wiper.
A keep plate is bolted to the top of the valve with a constant load on the rings and packing by use of disc springs.
The ammount of disc springs,arrangement and specific details depend on the size of the valve.
The specific details of the invention are described by way of example,with reference to accompanying sketches.

The top half of the valve shown in the sketches is new.This comprises of a cast iron body designed to the specific requirements of the valve along with the packing and disc spring arrangement.
A new valve stem or modification to the existing stem must take place prior to the assembly of the valve.
To inspect the condition of the packing the top keep plate can be removed.
To dismantle the valve all the springs must be removed and this is the required method to change the disc springs at the end of their service life.

Claims (4)

1. A gate valve of this type with die cast rings,braided carbon packing under load by disc springs will cut down on maintenance "Down Time"as any adjustments in the disc springs tensions will control the radial expansion.
2. A gate valve as in claim 1 using the graphite rings will have less friction on the valve stem and be subject to less wear due to the graphite proportions.
3. A gate valve as in claims 1/2 has unlimited pressure capabilities subject to the rating on the valve body.
4. A gate valve as in claims 1/2/3 will reduce process and maintenance cost through increased operational efficiency.
