Abstract

A member or package 10 to be hung on a hook 24 includes an upper sheet portion which includes a tab 13 defined by a cut line 18 and a straight score line 14, between the ends of the cut line 18. The tab 13 is arranged to be folded about the score line 14 to provide an aperture to receive a hook 24 to hang the package 10. The score line 14 retains the tab 13 connected to the remainder of the package so that it does not fall away as litter, in use, or have to be removed in manufacture. <IMAGE>

Description

A MEMBER TO BE HUNG ON A HOOK The invention relates to a member to be hung on a hook and relates particularly, but not exclusively, to packages to be hung on hooks in shops.
A known package to be hung on a hook in a shop comprises a card sheet, the lower part of which mounts a plastic package containing a product and the upper part of which includes a line of weakening defining a press-out tab. The line of weakening comprises a line of long cuts leaving only small frangibie connections connecting the tab to the remainder of the card sheet.
The line of weakening is transversely elongate having a straight lower edge, rounded sides and an upper edge which is straight except for a rounded central upwards deviation. The tab is intended to be removed so that the package can be hung on a hook which passes through the aperture left by removal of the tab. The tab may be removed by a person or may be removed by the action of pushing the package onto a hook. The tab must then be disposed of, however, and that may be inconvenient.
According to the invention there is provided a member to be hung on a hook, the member including a portion made from card which includes a tab defined by a cut line or a line of weakening and a connection portion provided between the ends of the cut line or line of weakening, the tab being arranged to be folded about the connection portion to provide an aperture to receive a hook to hang the member, the connection portion being arranged to retain the tab connected to the remainder of the member, the total connection length of the connection portion being 15 to 35mm.
In this way, the tab is permanently retained on the member and so no disposal is required.
The connection portion may include a fold line between the ends of the line of weakening. The fold line may be scored and/or perforated.
The line of weakening may take any suitable form but is preferably a through cut.
The tab may be any suitable shape and may be elongate.
Preferably the tab is transversely elongate.
Preferably, the connection portion comprises a substantial part of an elongate edge of the tab. The connection portion may be at any suitable side of the tab but preferably is at a lower side of the tab. The line of weakening is preferably shaped to define a notch in the aperture opened by folding of the tab.
The notch may be at an upper portion of the cut line or line of weakening. Thus, a hook which is smaller than the aperture can locate in the notch. The notch is preferably arranged centrally of the tab. The tab may be in one piece or may be in at least two pieces.
Where the tab is elongate, the tab preferably includes a central piece.
The said portion may be in the form of a sheet or a plurality of superimposed sheet layers. The connection portion may comprise a continuous connection or may comprise a plurality of connections separated by perforations or cut lines.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a member of the invention in a first embodiment; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the member of Fig. 1 hung on a single pronged hook; and, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the member of Fig. 1 hung on a two pronged hook.
The member or package 10 of the first embodiment as shown in Fig. 1 comprises a card sheet 11 to which a plastics tray 12 is attached. The plastics tray 12 may be clear and hold products to be displayed. At the upper part of the card sheet 11, not overlapped by the plastics tray 12, is a tab 13. The tab 13 is transversely elongate and includes a flat lower edge defined by a score line 14 and rounded semi-circular side edges 15 and a flat upper edge 16 having a smoothly curved bulge 17 centrally, the latter features being defined by a cut line 18. The tab 13 is divided into three parts 19,20,21 by two cut lines 22,23 which run parallel across the tab 13 from adjacent each side of the bulge 17 straight across to the fold line 14.
In use as shown in Fig. 2, the package is mounted on a wire hook 24 by using the hook 24 to push the central part 20 of the tab 13 outwardly folding it about the line 14 so that the hook lies through the aperture formed by movement of the tab 13 out of the plane of the sheet 11 and lies in the notch 25 where the bulge 17 in the tab 13 was. The tab 13 is retained connected to the remainder of the member by the connection through the score line 14. The outer parts 19,21 remain in position.
Fig. 3 shows the package 10 mounted on a two pronged hook 26, which is in common use in the United Kingdom.
The package 10 is mounted on the two pronged hook 26 in the same way as on the single pronged hook 24. The outer parts 19,21 of the tab 13 are pushed out together with the central part 20 and the hook 25 is not received in the bulge part of the notch 25. The tab parts 19,20,21 are retained by connection through the score line 14. Where the package is intended to be hung on a two pronged hook 26 as shown the notch 25 may not be provided and the tab 13 may not include the cut lines 22,23.
The card sheet 11 may be of 200 or 220 gsm coated pulp board and the score line may be scored to a depth of 15 to 20 x 10-' ins (0.38 to 0.76mm) e.g. 0.4mm. The score line 14 may be 15 to 35mm long.
The tray 12 may be made from any suitable plastics material and in other embodiments may be made from other, non-plastics materials.
In a further embodiment, the tray may overlap the tab 13 and a further tab of the same form may be defined therein. In that way to hang the package, both tabs can be bent out about lines of weakness.
