Abstract

A mobile station is operable in different modes in different communications systems, for example trunked and direct. When the mobile switches to a new mode it informs the system controller that it is able to monitor call set-up signals from the system controller.

Description

COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM Field of the Invention This invention relates in general to a communications system such as a trunked radio communications system, and more particularly to a method for informing a system controller of a trunked radio communications system of a monitoring capability of a mobile station.
Background to the Invention Trunked radio communications systems are well known in the art. In trunked radio communications systems, a plurality of subscribers share a predetermined number of communications resources. The resources are assigned to subscribers, or mobile stations, by a system controller of the trunked radio system. The system controller may be a central control station or distributed logic at various control stations.
In a trunked communications system, each of the trunked mobile stations is specially equipped with control circuitry to enable requesting and receiving a communications resource and to enable operating on the communications resource assigned by the system controller. Typically, before a trunked mobile station is able to request a communications resource from the system controller, the mobile station must first have registered with the trunked radio system. Registration allows a mobile station to be identified to the system controller and thereby be located by the system controller when needed. Registration is also an important part of security of the trunked radio system. The system controller is able to deny access to a communications resource for a mobile station if the mobile station is not properly registered on the trunked radio system.
Also in a trunked communications system, each of the trunked mobile stations includes control circuitry to enable monitoring a communications resource in order to receive information from the system controller or another mobile station via the system controller. For example, when mobile stations are in idle mode they may monitor a predetermined communications resource that is especially allocated for control messages and not traffic messages.
The mobile stations monitor the control channel in order to receive incoming data signals. The control channel is used to contact any mobile station on the trunked communications system and set up communications on a communications resource other than the control channel. Mobile stations in an idle mode of operation are constantly monitoring the control channel. Mobile stations involved in communications on communications resources other than the control channel must finish with their communications then switch back to monitoring the control channel.
In trunked communications systems it is desirable to have a mobile station be able to operate in a direct mode whereby mobile stations may communicate directly to other mobile units without the benefit of the system controller or the trunking infrastructure. In direct mode, the mobile units communicate over a fixed radio channel and there is no system controller allocating resources.
It is desirable to be able to monitor the control channel of the trunked radio communications system and also monitor communications on a fixed communications resource of the direct mode communications system without switching modes of operation in the mobile station. Thus, in one mode of operation, it is desirable to be able to monitor at least two communications systems at one mobile station capable of operating in the respective communications systems. In order to be able to monitor two communications systems it is desirable to have a method for informing the system controller of at least one of the communications systems of the monitoring capability of the mobile station.
Summarv of the Invention According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for informing a system controller of a monitoring capability of a mobile station. In a preferred embodiment the mobile station sends a message to the system controller to inform the system controller that the mobile station is in a particular mode of operation and is able to be reached according to its first monitoring capability.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, the system controller or another mobile station via the system controller directs the mobile station to change mode of operation and thereby change the mobile station's monitoring capability.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment FIG. 1 shows a coverage area 10 for a trunked radio communications system including a base station 11 and a gateway transceiver 14 within the coverage area and a direct mode mobile 16 outside of the coverage area 10. The gateway transceiver is a radio unit that is able to operate both on the trunked radio communications system and in direct mode. The gateway transceiver 14 provides a gateway between a direct mode mobile station 16 and the trunked radio communications system.
The base station of a trunked radio communications system includes a system controller 12. The system controller 12 controls registration of mobile stations on the trunked radio communications system. The system controller 12 transmits messages over a predetermined communications resource to mobile stations that are monitoring the predetermined communications resource in order to set up communication between mobile stations that desire to communicate. The trunked radio communication system may be of any type known in the art.
The direct mode mobile station 16 is a mobile station operating in a direct mode. The direct mode mobile station 16 is able to communicate directly to another mobile station or gateway transceiver 14 over a fixed or single communications resource. The direct mode may be a selective mode of operation for a trunked mobile station whereby the mobile station may communicate directly with another mobile station without going through the system controller 12 of the trunked radio system. The coverage area 18 of a direct mode mobile station 16 is usually much smaller than the coverage area of a trunked radio communications system 10.
FIG. 2 shows the direct mode mobile station 16 communicating directly to a gateway transceiver 14 thereby communicating to the system controller 12 of the trunked radio communications system.
The direct mode mobile station 16 communicates over a fixed communications resource to the gateway transceiver 14. The gateway transceiver 14 then communicates to the system controller 12 over a trunked radio communications resource. The gateway transceiver 14 provides a communication link between the system controller and the direct mode mobile station 16.
FIG. 1 and 2 also shows a dual watch mobile station 15 that is able to operate in either the trunked radio communications system or in direct mode. Preferably, only one mode is selected at any one time but the dual watch mobile station is capable of monitoring direct mode channels while in trunking mode or trunking communication resources while in direct mode.
Dual watch operation allows a mobile station using direct mode service to monitor a communications resource of the trunked radio communications system for any incoming signals. Operating in dual watch a mobile station is capable of being active in a direct mode communication while monitoring a trunking communications resource. In particular, a control channel may be established whereby the system controller of the trunked radio communications system sets up communications for mobile stations. The control channel may then be monitored by the mobile station operating in dual watch or as a gateway transceiver.
Referring to FIG. 3, a potential frame structure for a control channel 20 of the trunked radio communications system and a direct mode channel 25 are shown. In a trunked TDMA communications system a communication frequency or frequencies are divided into time frames and time slots. FIG. 3 shows a structure of a control channel 20 for a trunking system divided into time frames 21, 22.
Typically a trunked mobile station monitors each time frame 21, 22 on the control channel 20. When a mobile station is operating in dual watch or as a gateway transceiver it is apparent that the mobile station is unable to monitor every frame 21, 22 of the control channel 20. Thus, the mobile station has a reduced monitoring capability and may be only able to monitor, for example, every 18th frame 21 of the trunked control channel 20.
Typically when a mobile station monitors a direct mode channel 25 it monitors each time burst 26. However, when a mobile station is in dual watch the mobile station is required to monitor both the direct mode channel and the trunking control channel.
Thus, the mobile station must inform the system controller of its reduced monitoring capability. The system controller assumes that the mobile station is constantly monitoring the down link channel and will page accordingly unless instructed otherwise. If the system controller is not informed of a change in the mobile station's monitoring capability there may be excessive call set up failures and slow call set up times. A mobile station may miss many important calls.
Furthermore, a mobile station operating in dual watch mode and active in a direct mode call is still required to monitor the trunking control channel. However, due to the limited performance of mobile stations it seems likely that a mobile station capability of monitoring a trunking channel could be even further reduced.
Dual watch also allows a mobile station operating in trunking mode to be able to monitor a direct mode communications resource.
In order to operate or monitor more than one communications system the present invention provides an efficient method of informing a system controller of the trunked radio communications system of the monitoring capability of the mobile station.
FIG. 4 shows a state diagram of the different states or modes of operation for a mobile station and information flow exchange between the modes of operation. A mobile station operating in trunked mode 32 may change its mode of operation to direct mode 34. When doing so the mobile station identifies itself to the system controller, de-registers with the system controller of the trunked radio communications system and optionally informs the system controller that the mobile station will be operating in direct mode 42. When changing from direct mode 34 to trunked mode 32 the mobile station must register with the system controller of the trunked radio communications system 44. While the present invention assumes that a mobile station must register with the system controller of a trunked radio communications system registration is not imperative according to the present invention.
When operating in trunked mode 32 the mobile station constantly monitors the control channel of the trunked radio communications system. In trunked mode the mobile station has full monitoring capability and thus monitors the control channel until the mobile station becomes engaged in a communication.
However when the mobile station operates as a gateway transceiver 36 or in dual watch mode 38 the mobile station monitors the control channel of the trunked radio communications system with reduced capability.
In dual watch mode 38 the mobile station is monitoring both the control channel of the trunked radio communications system and the fixed communications resources of the direct mode operation.
Thus, the mobile station is only able to monitor the two communications systems at a reduced capability. For example, the mobile station may monitor the trunked radio communications system at particular time slots if the trunked radio communications system is a TDMA system. The mobile station must inform the system controller of the trunked radio communications system when the mobile station will be monitoring the trunked radio communications system so that the system controller only sends information to the mobile station, particularly information that pertains to the mobile station, during the time periods that the mobile station is monitoring the trunked radio communications system. Thus, the system controller must be informed in order for the system controller to adapt its behaviour accordingly.
If the mobile station operating in dual watch mode receives an incoming call on the direct mode channel the mobile station will probably become active within the call and as a consequence further reduce the mobile station's capability of monitoring the trunking control channel. Thus, the system controller must be informed of the further reduction. Such conditions are discussed in more detail later.
In dual watch mode 38, when the mobile station is not monitoring the control channel of the trunked radio communications system it monitors the fixed communications resources of the direct mode system. Thus, the mobile station is monitoring both the control channel of the trunked radio communications system and the fixed channel of direct mode operation but is monitoring each system at a reduced capability, in order to monitor both systems.
In gateway transceiver mode 36 the mobile station is communicating over both the trunking air interface to the system controller and the direct mode interface so the mobile station is not able to monitor either communications system with full capability.
In FIG. 4 when the mobile station changes from trunked mode 32 to gateway transceiver mode 36 the mobile station informs the system controller of its new mode and of its reduced monitoring capability 62. When the mobile station changes from gateway transceiver mode 36 to trunked mode 32 the mobile station likewise informs the system controller of the new mode and the change in monitoring capability 64.
When a mobile station changes from a trunked mode 32 to a dual watch mode 38 it informs the system controller of its new mode of operation and of its reduced monitoring capability 58.
Similarly, when the mobile station changes from dual watch mode 38 to trunked mode 32 the mobile station informs the system controller of its new mode of operation and its increased monitoring capability 56.
When changing from direct mode 34 to gateway transceiver mode 36 the mobile station must register with the system controller 46 and inform the system controller of its new operating mode and monitoring capability 48. The monitoring capability of the trunked radio communications resource will be an increased capability compared to the direct mode 34 but will be a reduced capability compared to trunked mode 32 since in gateway transceiver mode 36 the mobile station will be communicating in two communications systems, trunked and direct.
When a mobile station changes from gateway transceiver mode 36 to dual watch mode 38 the mobile station informs the system controller of its new mode of operation and of its change in monitoring capability if there is a change in monitoring capability 52. Similarly, when the mobile station changes from dual watch mode 38 to gateway transceiver mode 36 the mobile station informs the system controller of its change of mode and its change of monitoring capability if there is a change in monitoring capability 54. When a system changes from gateway transceiver mode 36 to dual watch mode 38 or vice versa there may be no change in monitoring capability. The mobile station may monitor both the direct mode communications system and the trunked radio communications system in the same manner in both modes of operations.
When a mobile station changes from a direct mode of operation 34 to dual watch mode 38 the mobile station must register with the system controller of the trunked radio communications system, identify the new mode of operation and indicate a reduced monitoring capability 90. Since the mobile station will be operating in dual watch mode 38 it will be monitoring two communications systems and will only be able to monitor the signals from the system controller with a reduced and not full capability.
When a mobile station changes from dual watch mode 38 to direct mode 34 the mobile station must de-register with the system controller and inform the system controller of its new mode of operation 88. In direct mode the mobile station will not directly monitor the control channel of the trunked radio communications system. Although in direct mode the mobile station may indirectly monitor the control channel of the trunked radio communications system via a gateway transceiver.
The mobile station may operate in analog FM mode 40. In analog FM mode 40 the mobile station does not monitor the control channel of the trunked radio communications system nor does it monitor the direct mode communications resources. Thus, if the mobile station changes from analog FM mode 40 to trunked mode 32, dual watch mode 38, or gateway transceiver mode 36, the mobile station must register with the system controller of the trunked radio communications system and identify its new mode of operation 76, 72, 68. If the mobile station changes to dual watch mode 38 or gateway transceiver mode 36 the mobile station must further inform the system controller of the monitoring capability of the mobile station 72, 68. The mobile station may also simply switch into direct mode 34.
When the mobile station changes from trunked mode 32, dual watch mode 38 or gateway transceiver mode 36 to analog FM mode 40 the mobile station must de-register with the system controller and inform the system controller of its new mode of operation 78, 74, 66. The mobile station may simply switch from direct mode 34 to analog FM mode 40.
It may be optional to inform the system controller of a new mode of operation when changing modes of operation in FIG. 4 but it is necessary to inform the system controller of any change in monitoring capability in order to insure receiving all possible communication signals at the mobile station.
Monitoring capability depends upon the particular communications system. For example, monitoring capability could be expressed in frame and time slots in a TDMA system.
Referring to FIG. 5, a flow diagram showing a method of changing from a trunked mode, gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode 300 to direct mode or analog FM mode 320. When a mobile station changes from a trunked mode, gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode 300 to direct mode or analog FM mode 320 it exits a mode of operation that communicates with the system controller and enters a mode of operation that does not directly communicate with the system controller. Thus, the mobile station stops directly communicating with or monitoring the system controller.
Specifically, the mobile station may be instructed by the system controller to change its mode of operation as in step 302. If so, the mobile station acknowledges the mode change instruction as in step 304 by either transmitting a message back to the system controller or by simply de-registering with the system controller by sending a de-registration request to the system controller, step 316.
The mobile station then switches into direct mode or analog FM mode (or equivalent) as in step 320.
The mobile station may be instructed to change mode from another mobile station or fixed line station, via the system controller as in step 308. Once again. the mobile station acknowledges the mode change instruction, step 310, either by transmitting a message back to the system controller or by simply de-registering by sending a de-registration request to the system controller as in step 316.
The mobile station then switches into direct mode or analog FM mode as in step 320.
The mobile station may be instructed to change mode of operation by a means other than the system controller, another mobile or fixed line station as in step 312. For example, the mobile station user may desire to change modes. If so, the mobile station informs the system controller that the mobile station is about to enter either a direct mode of operation or an analog FM mode of operation as in step 314. This information could be passed to the system controller using the de-registering signalling of step 316.
The mobile station then switches into direct mode or analog FM mode as in step 320.
FIG. 6 shows a flow chart for a method of changing from a trunked mode, gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode as in step 400 to a gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 415. When a mobile station changes from a trunked mode, gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode as in step 400 to a gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 415 the mobile station changes from a mode of operation that monitors a communications resource of the system controller to another mode of operation that monitors a communications resource of the system controller. The communications resource may be the same communications resource in all cases but does not need to be the same communications resource in all cases. Thus, the mobile station continues to monitor the system controller of the trunked radio communications system but possibility with a different monitoring capability.
If a mobile station is instructed by the system controller to change its mode of operation as in step 402 the mobile station acknowledges the mode change instruction and informs the system controller of its new monitoring capability as in step 404. The mobile station then switches into gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 415.
If a mobile station is instructed by another mobile station or fixed line station, via the system controller to change its mode of operation as in step 406 the mobile station acknowledges the mode change instruction and informs the system controller of its new monitoring capability as in step 408. The mobile station then switches into gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 415.
The mobile station may be instructed to change mode of operation by a means other than the system controller, another mobile or fixed line station as in step 410. For example, the mobile station user may desire to change modes. If so, the mobile station informs the system controller that the mobile station is about to enter either gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode. The mobile station must also inform the system controller of its new monitoring capability as in step 412. The mobile station then switches into gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 415.
FIG. 7 shows a flow chart for a method of changing from direct mode or an analog FM mode as in step 500 to gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 512. When a mobile station changes from direct mode or an analog FM mode as in step 500 to gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 512 the mobile station changes from a mode of operation that is not monitoring the system controller of the trunked radio communications system to a mode of operation that does monitor the system controller. Thus, there is a change of monitoring capability.
The mobile station may be instructed to change mode of operation by another mobile station as in step 502 while operating in direct mode or analog FM mode. If so, the mobile station acknowledges the mode change instruction as in step 504. In the alternative the mobile station may be instructed to change mode by a means other than another mobile station such as in step 506. For example the mobile station user may decide to operate in gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode.
In either way the mobile station must then register with the system controller as in step 508. After registration, the mobile station informs the system controller of its new monitoring capability as in step 510. Such information may be passed with the registration signalling. The mobile station then switches to gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode or trunked mode as in step 512.
FIG. 8 shows a state diagram and representative information flows from a mobile station to a system controller when switching between the internal states of a dual watch mode of operation. A dual watch mobile station may be operating in idle mode 1001 and then become active in a direct mode call 1002. If so the mobile station informs the system controller of its reduction or change in monitoring capability and optionally of its new mode of operation which is dual watch active in a direct mode call 94. Similar information flow 94 occurs when the mobile station is active in a trunked call 1004 and becomes active in a direct mode call 1002.
When the mobile station is active in a trunked call 1004 or in a direct mode call 1002 and switches into idle mode 1001 the information flows 58 from the mobile station to the system controller includes the mobile station change in monitoring capability. When a dual watch mobile station which is active in a direct mode call 1002 switches into active in a trunked mode call 1004 or switches from idle 1001 into a trunked mode call 1004 the information flow 92 includes informing the system controller of the new capability which may vary dependent on the mobile station and optionally informing the system controller of the mobile station's new mode of operation 1004.
FIG. 9 shows a state diagram and representative information flows from a mobile station to a system controller when switching between the internal states of a gateway transceiver mode of operation. A gateway transceiver mobile station may be operating in idle mode 1006 and then become active in a direct mode call 1008. If so the mobile station informs the system controller of its reduction or change in monitoring capability and optionally of its new mode of operation which is dual watch active in a direct mode call 98. Similar information flow 98 occurs when the mobile is active in a trunked call 1010 and becomes active in a direct mode call 1008. When the mobile station is active in a trunked call 1010 or in a direct mode call 1008 and switches into idle mode 1006 the information flows 58 from the mobile station to the system controller includes the mobile station change in monitoring capability. When a dual watch mobile station which is active in a direct mode call 1008 switches into active in a trunked mode call 1010 or switches from idle 1006 into a trunked mode call 1010 the information flow 96 includes informing the system controller of the change in monitoring capability and optionally informing the system controller of the mobile station's new mode of operation 1010.
FIG. 10 shows a flow diagram for a dual watch or gateway transceiver mobile station that becomes active in a trunked mode call or a direct mode call. According to an embodiment of the present invention a dual watch or gateway transceiver mobile station may have a change in monitoring capability when the mobile station becomes involved in a direct mode call or a trunked mode call and thus must inform the system controller of the mobile station of its change in monitoring capability.
Referring to FIG. 10, a gateway transceiver or dual watch mobile station monitoring the trunked radio communications resource and the direct mode channels 1101 may be instructed or invited to enter a trunked mode call 1102. If so, the mobile station then informs the system controller of the trunked radio communications system that it is about to enter a trunked mode call and may enter full trunking capability without the ability to monitor the direct mode channel. However a gateway transceiver mobile station may be capable of assuming full trunking capabilities while still monitoring the direct mode channel. In both cases the system controller must be informed of the change in monitoring capability 1104. At the completion of the trunked mode call the mobile station returns back into gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode and assumes the respective monitoring capabilities 1110.
Alternatively, a dual watch or gateway transceiver mobile station 1101 may be invited or instructed to enter a direct mode call 1106. If so, the mobile station informs the system controller that the mobile station is about to enter a direct mode call and that its monitoring capability of the trunked radio communications resource is about to be reduced 1108. At the completion of the direct mode call the mobile station returns back to gateway transceiver mode or dual watch mode and assumes the respective monitoring capabilities 1110.
FIGS. 11 and 12 summarise the information flows of FIGS. 4, 8 and 9 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention as described in the above descriptions of FIGS. 4, 8 and 9. For example in FIG. 4, when a mobile station changes from a trunked mode of operation to a direct mode of operation 42 (FIG. 11) the mobile station de-registers with the system controller (registration and de-registration are dependent upon the particular trunked radio communications system and therefore may be optional) and informs the system controller of its new mode of operation in this case being direct mode. The mobile station identity must also be known or passed to the system controller. Similarly as described above for the rest of the information flows of the tables of FIGS. 11 and 12 corresponding to the information flows of FIGS. 4, 8 and 9.
The present invention provides a method that facilitates monitoring communications resources of more than one communications system for a number of different operating modes for a mobile station capable of communicating in at least two different communications systems. Particularly, the present invention provides a method for informing the system controller of the monitoring capability of the mobile station.
