Abstract
A ductile locking washer has a flat circular base 11 and a frusto-conical flange 12 whose bore 13 encircles a cap-screw head with clearance, and a formation which engages a component to prevent rotation of the washer, the frusto-conical flange 12 being flattened against its base 11 to cause the bore 13 to deform inwards onto and be indented by axial serrations on the cap-screw head to lock it. The formation comprises a tab 15 which engages in a bore in the component; alternatively the formation is a flat on the side of the washer which engages a ledge on the component. <IMAGE>
Description
LOCKING-WASHER FOR CAP-SEWS.
The invention relates to a locking-washer for cap-screws of the kind where part of the washer is deformed, after the cap-screw has been tightened,to engage with axial-serrations provided on it's head.
According to the invention the locking-washer is of ductile sheet material and of circular-form, having a flat base,an engagement-means to engage it to the bolted-component,and a preformed upper-part of truncated conical-form, which encircles, with clearance, the lower part of the head of the cap-screw ,the upper-part of the washer being flattened hard-down onto its base-part, by means of a suitable tool, after the cap-screw has been tightened, to cause the bore of the upper-part to close in hard-against and, thereby, be indented by axialserrations provided on the head of the cap-screw and thus engage the locking-washer to the cap-screw,to thereby lock it.
The object of the invention is to provide a strong and positive loc]ing-mealls suitable for use in applications where the operating conditions are severe, such as where the operating temperature is lligh and/or where the application is subjected to shaking, shock, reciprocating,or other forces, or where tl,ere is a hi# level of vibration A further feature of the invention is that it c & be inspected after assembly to ensure the locking operation has ben satisfactorily carried out and the locking is securc.
The invention is exemplified by the accompanying dravings,in which
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the locking-washer and Figure 1 is a plan view.
Figures 3 and 4 show the locking-washer in Position,Prior to the upper-part being flattened down to loc the nut.
Figures 5 and 6 show the locking-R.asher ill it's locked form.
Figures 7 and 8 show a nodified for of the means by which the locking-lfaslaer may be engaged to the bolted -coniponent.
Figures 9 and 10 show another modified form of the means by which the locking-washer may be engaged to the bolted-component.
Referring to the drawings , the locking-washer has a flat circular base 11 and an upper-part 12 of truncated conical-form whose circular bore 13 has clearance to the cap-screw head 14, the washer being engaged to the bolted-component by means of tab 15 which engages with hole 16 provided in the component.
Figures 5 and 6 show the washer in its locked form ,with the upper part 12a flattened dovn against the base-part 11 ,with the inneredge 17 of the upper-part engaged with the axial-serrations 18 on the head of the cap-screw to effect the locking-means.
Referring to Figures 7 and 8 which show a modified form of the means by which the lockirg-washer may be engaged to the boltedcomponent ,this is effected by flat 19 provided on the side of the washer which abuts ledge 20 on the component.
Referring to Figures 9 and 10 which show another modified form of the means by which the locking-washer may be engaged to the component, this is effected by a tab 21 formed in the bore of the washer which engages with hole 22 provided in the component.
Claims (3)
1. A locking-washer for cap-screws of the kind set forth, which is of ductile sheet material and of circular-form, having a flat base and a preformed upper-part of truncated conical-form which encircles, with clearance ,the lower part of the head of the cap-screw ,the upper-part of the washer being flattened hard-dolrn onto its base-part ,after the cap-screw has been tightened ,to cause it's bore to close in hard against and thereby be indented by ,to thus engage with ,axial-serrations on the head of the cap-screw ,which, together with an engagement-means provided on the washer which engages it to the bolted-component,thereby locks the cap-screw.
2. A locking-washer,according to Claim 1, wherein a tab is provided on the base-part of the washer to engage with a hole provided in the bolted-component to effect the said engagement-means.
3. A locking-washer, according to Claim 1, wherein a flat is provided on the side of tie washer to abut a ledge provided on the bolted-component to effect the said engagement-means.
li. A lockin-washer for cap-scvewis sibstantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 to 10.
