Abstract

A hinge comprises two leaf members 1, 2 having knuckles 3, 4 with aligned axial bores. A hinge pin 7 which connects the leaves 1, 2 has a tapered shank portion 17 received in a tapered bore 18 of a bush 8 located in the knuckle 3 of one of the leaves 1. The pin is rotationally fixed to the knuckle 4 of the other leaf 2 and is axially tensioned by means of a spring washer 20 to radially compress the bush 8 to provide frictionally restrain relative rotation of the leaves 1, 2. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO HINGES This invention concerns improvements in or relating to hinges for mounting an opening wing of a door, window or the like in a surrounding fixed frame.
In particular, this invention is concerned with hinges of the kind comprising two leaf members for securing to the wing and frame respectively and pivotally connected for relative rotation by a hinge pin extending through bores in knuckles of the leaf members.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved hinge of the kind set forth wherein relative rotation of the leaf members is frictionally restrained.
According to the present invention there is provided a hinge for mounting an opening wing of a door, window or the like in a surrounding fixed frame, the hinge comprising two leaf members for securing to the wing and frame respectively and pivotally connected for relative rotation by a hinge pin extending through bores in knuckles of the leaf members to pivotally connect the leaf members for relative rotation wherein the hinge pin extends through a bush located in the knuckle bore of one leaf member and is adapted to apply a radial force to the bush to restrain frictionally relative rotation of the leaf members.
Preferably, the hinge pin has a tapered shank portion received in a tapered bore of the bush and is axially tensioned to compress radially the bush within the knuckle bore to create friction between the hinge pin and bush. For example, the hinge pin may be axially tensioned by a spring washer.
Advantageously, the bush is anchored against rotation relative to the knuckle bore of said one leaf member. For example, the bush may have a rib or like projection received in a recess in the knuckle.
Preferably, the bush is adapted to separate the knuckles. For example, the bush may have a flange at one end that is positioned between the knuckles.
Conveniently, the hinge pin is anchored against rotation relative to the knuckle bore of the other leaf member. For example, the hinge pin may have a rib or like projection received in a recess in the knuckle.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: FIGURE 1 is an exploded isometric view of a hinge embodying the invention; FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal section through the knuckles of the assembled hinge; and FIGURE 3 shows, in part section, the hinge mounting an opening wing of a door or window in a surrounding fixed frame.
The hinge shown in the drawings comprises two leaf members 1,2 having knuckles 3,4 with aligned cylindrical bores 5,6 respectively through which a hinge pin 7 extends to pivotally connect the leaf members 1,2 for relative rotation.
A tubular bush 8 is located in the bore 5 of one knuckle 3 and has a flange 9 at one end that is positioned between the knuckles 3,4. The bush 8 is located against rotation relative to the knuckle 3 by engagement of a rib 10 on the underside of the flange 9 in a recess 11 in the knuckle 3.
The hinge pin 7 has an enlarged head 12 at one end from which a cylindrical shank portion 13 located in the bore 6 of the other knuckle 4 extends. The hinge pin 7 is located against rotation relative to the knuckle 4 by engagement of a rib 14 on the underside of the head 12 in a recess 15 in the knuckle 4.
The cylindrical shank portion 13 terminates in a transverse abutment shoulder 16 that seats on flange 9 and leads to a coaxial tapered shank portion 17 located in a complementary tapered bore 18 of the bush 8.
The tapered shank portion 17 terminates in a cylindrical tail 19 that projects from bore 18 through a spring washer 20 such as a Belleville washer and the hinge pin 7 is secured by swaging the tail 19 to flatten the washer 20.
As a result, the hinge pin 7 is axially tensioned and applies a radial force to the bush 8 by means of the tapered shank portion 17 thereby creating friction between the hinge pin 7 and bush 8 that resists relative rotation of the leaf members 1,2.
The knuckles 3,4 are offset from base flanges 21,22 provided with screw holes 23,24 respectively for securing the leaf members 1,2 to an opening wing 25 and surrounding fixed frame 26 respectively of a door or window as shown in Figure 3. In general, the wing 25 is supported by at least two hinges for pivotal movement about a vertical or horizontal axis for controlling frictionally movement of the wing 25 relative to the frame 26.
The wing 25 may be located and retained in any adjusted open position relative to the frame 26 by the internal friction of the hinges alone and secured in the closed position by a suitable fastener. In this way, a separate stay for securing the wing in selected open positions may not be required with resultant cost savings.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment above-described. For example, the hinge pin and bush may be anchored against rotation relative to the associated knuckle by any suitable means. The hinge pin may be secured by any suitable means which may be adjustable to vary the axial tensioning and thus control the level of friction created.
