Abstract
A wallpaper stripping solution comprises a gelling agent, an alkaline solution and a wetting agent.
Description
- P56113 Wallpaper Stripping Solution
The present invention relates to wall paper stripping solutions.
Many wallpaper stripping preparations are available and usually comprise a powder or liquid which is diluted with water. The subsequent mixture is applied to the wallpaper to be stripped which can be scored if need be in order to improve penetration of the stripping solution. In practice it is quite common for the stripping solution to have to be repeatedly applied to an area of wallpaper to be stripped in order to be able to release the wall paper from the surface to which it is adhered. Once the stripping solution is applied to the wallpaper it will run down the wallpaper and possibly mark carpets and skirting boards and also may run into electrical fittings such as sockets if protection is not provided.
Also many stripping solutions available do not adequately penetrate wall paper such as anaglypta or wallpapers which have been painted with emulsion paint. In the case of these two types of surface it is usually necessary to score through the paper so that the stripping solution can penetrate to a sufficient degree for the paper to be readily scraped from the wall.
The present invention seeks to provide a wallpaper stripping solution which is easier to use in the sense that it does not tend to run down the wall and which provides adequate penetration through ordinary wallpapers, anaglypta and papers which have been coated with emulsion paint without the need for scoring.
Accordingly the present invention provides a wallpaper stripping solution comprising a gelling agent, an alkaline solution and a wetting agent to which water can be added so as to dilute the solution for use.
For example the gelling agent can comprise a carboxypolymethylene and the alkaline solution can comprise caustic soda. The wetting agent can comprise sodium laurel sulphate.
When these agents are mixed a clear solution is provided which can then be diluted with water to form of a gel. When applied to a wallpaper surface to be stripped the gel adheres the wallpaper and does not run towards the floor thereby avoiding marking of carpets and skirting boards and causing electrical short circuits for example in wall sockets.
It has been found in practice that the stripping solution can be applied to all of the walls of a room releasing the wallpaper from the walls and the wallpaper can be readily removed with the aid of a tool such as a scraper, after the solution has been applied to the whole room. Thus, small areas of wall do not have to be treated and scraped. The whole room can be treated intially, and the wallpaper subsequently removed.
It has also been found that the stripping solution according to the present invention will readily release anaglypta type wallpapers and wallpapers which have been coated with a emulsion paint with a matt or a satin finish without the need for scoring the wallpaper.
One example of a stripping solution according to the present invention comprises 6g/litre of carboxypolymethylene, 0.5g/litre of caustic soda and 4g/litre of sodium laurel sulphate.
A one litre concentrated solution can be made using 70g/litre of carboxypolymethylene, 20g/litre sodium laurel sulphate, and 2.5g/litre of caustic soda. This concentrated solution can then be diluted to make up 5 litres of working solution.
The solution can be provided in liquid or powder form and can be provided in the form of a two component solution so that the two components can be combined by the user and then diluted.
The solution can be in the form of a gel or it can be an aerated gel, ie. a mousse.
