Abstract
A door or window fitting is attached to a PVC-U frame 10 by pegs 16 that project from a base member 12 of the fitting. The pegs can be deformed to form a flange 27 on the other side of the frame member which clamps the base member 12 to the frame 10. The pegs 16 are hollow and include a portion 19 deformable under an axial load applied to the peg. An axial load may be applied to the peg by tightening a screw inserted through hole 17 to engage with a threaded portion 18 of the peg. <IMAGE>
Description
DOOR OR WINDOW FITTINGS
The invention relates to door or window fittings.
There are a wide range of fittings for doors and windows including hinges, locks, handles and security bolts for both doors and windows and stays for windows. Where the door or window is made of wood or metal, such a fitting is attached to the door or window by a base member provided on the fitting and including holes through which pass two or more screws to thread into the metal or wood of the door or window.
If, however, the door or window is made of a plastics material, the attachment of such fittings is more difficult because screws do not sufficiently securely engage in plastics windows to provide a satisfactory attachment. This is particularly true where windows are made of PVC-U. It has been proposed to overcome this problem by attaching metal mountings to such doors or windows and then engaging the screws through the base member into such mountings.
It is, however, a problem with such mountings that they require a separate set of parts in order to attach the fitting. In addition, the mountings themselves can often be difficult to connect to the door or window because of their tendency to rotate.
According to the invention, there is provided a door or window fitting comprising a base member having two attachment means for connecting the base member to a door or window, at least one of said attachment means being formed by a hollow peg for insertion through a hole in said door or window so that the peg projects from a side of the hole opposite said base member, said peg including a portion deformable under an axial load applied to the peg to form an annular flange projecting outwardly of said peg on said opposite side to clamp the base to the member.
In this way, the means for attaching the fitting to a plastics door or window is formed integrally with the fitting itself. The provision of the two attachment means on the base member resists the tendency of either attachment means to rotate.
Preferably the other attachment means is also formed by a peg having a portion deformable under an axial load applied to the peg to form an annular flange projecting outwardly of said peg on said opposite side to clamp the base to the member.
The or each peg is preferably tubular having an unthreaded portion adjacent the base and a threaded portion remote from the base, a screw being engageable with said threaded portion to apply said axial load and deform the unthreaded portion to form said flange.
The threaded portion is preferably such that the thread is stripped by the screw just after the flange has been formed.
Preferably said base carries a part of a door or window lock.
Alternatively, the base member may carry a part of a window friction stay.
The fitting is preferably made from a zinc-based alloy.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing which is a crosssectional view through a moving frame and a fixed frame of a door or window showing a top plate of a security lock attached to the fixed frame and the bottom plate of a security lock attached to the moving frame, the left-hand side of the drawing showing retaining pegs of the plates in an undeformed condition and the right-hand side of the drawing showing retaining pegs of the plate in a deformed condition.
A door or window comprises a fixed frame 10 of PVC-U and a moving frame 11 of PVC-U. In a window, the fixed frame 10 will be a fixed window frame and the moving frame 11, a glazed leaf. In a door, the fixed frame 10 will be a door surround and the moving frame 11, a door panel.
The security lock has a top plate 12 which is generally rectangular in plan view with an upper surface 13 and a lower surface 14. A central aperture 15 extends through the top plate 12 between the upper surface 13 and the lower surface 14. Two pegs 16 project from the lower surface 14 and are tubular with generally circular cross-sections. Each tubular peg 16 is aligned with a respective hole 17 extending through the top plate 12 between the upper and lower surfaces 13,14 to provide a continuous passage through the plate 13 and each peg 16.
The end of each peg 16 remote from the plate 12 is formed with a threaded portion 18. Adjacent the top plate 12, each peg 16 is formed with an unthreaded portion 19.
As seen in the drawing, each peg 16 projects through an associated drilling 20 in the fixed frame 10. As also seen in the drawing, the unthreaded portion 19 is dimensioned such that it extends through the associated drilling 20 and projects on the opposite side of the fixed frame 10 to the top plate 12.
A screw (not shown) is insertable through the hole 17 and into a peg 16 to engage with the threaded portion 18 of the peg. The length of the screw is such that, as it engages, a head of the screw engages on the upper surface 13 of the top plate 12 so that, as the screw is tightened, an axial load is applied to the peg 16. The characteristics of the peg (wall thickness, material, etc.) are chosen so that this load is sufficient to cause the peg 16 to deform at the junction between the threaded portion 18 and the unthreaded portion 19 and bulge outwardly so forming an annular flange 21 which engages against the fixed frame 10 to clamp the top plate 12 onto the fixed frame 10. This can be seen on the right-hand side of the drawing.
In addition, the thread is chosen so that when the flange 21 is formed the thread strips, so providing confirmation that flange formation is complete. With a zinc based alloy, a thread of 4.76mm (3/16't) BSW has been found to achieve this.
A bottom plate 22 is provided with a central threaded tube 23 projecting from an upper surface 24 of the bottom plate 22.
A lower surface 25 of the bottom plate 22 is provided with pegs 26 formed in the same way as the peg 16 of the top plate 12 and deformed to form a flange 27 in the same way as the pegs 16 of the top plate 12.
In use, a thumb-screw 28 is passed through the aperture 15 in the top plate 12 to engage in the threaded tube 23 of the bottom plate 22 and, acting against a shoulder in the aperture 15 to draw the moving frame 11 towards the fixed frame 10 and hold them locked together.
The fact that the pegs 16,26 are formed integrally with the top plate 12 and the bottom plate 22 means that no separate set of parts is required to attach the window lock to the
PVC-U frames. Further, since there are two pegs 16,26 on each plate 12,22, there is no tendency for either peg 16,22 to rotate as it is deformed.
Of course, there can be cases where a security lock of the kind described above with reference to the drawings has to be fitted to a frame that is partly of a plastics material such as PVC-U and partly to a frame that is of wood or metal. In this case, the part that has to be attached to the plastics material has a peg 16,26 as described above with reference to the drawings while the part that is to be attached to the wood/metal portion is provided with a screw hole so that it can be screwed to the wood/metal part.
Of course, similar pegs could be provided on a wide range of door and window fittings for attachment to plastics doors or windows. These could include hinges, locks, handles and security bolts for doors and windows and, for windows alone, friction stays. There need not be two pegs, there could be three or more pegs.
