Abstract

The device creates an infinitely variable output by bending or deflecting the device in relation to its ends. It comprises a hollow, flexible tube 2, one end of which contains a light source 1, a light detector 3 being provided at the other end. As the tube is bent, the amount of light detected varies in proportion to the amount of bending. The device may be provided on a glove finger for use eg. in video games, robot commands or disabled persons controls. <IMAGE>

Description

This invention relates to a device for generating a variE .~ Sue electrical output.
The requirement exists for a variable electrical output with infinite increments between set parameters. Devices to do this are usually expensive and not always reliable.
This invention is a cheap and reliable way of generating such electrical outputs.
According to the present invention there is a hollow cylinder or tube of a flexible material Fig 1 number 2, with a length dependant upon the exact application. One end of which contains a light source Fig 1 number 1, preferably Infra Red, emitting a signal into the tube/cylinder. At the other end is a receiver for the emitted signal Fig 1 number 3.
As the tube is deflected the amount of emission received by the receiver is infinitely varied in proportion to the deflection in the tube\cylinder.
A specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described as follows: An arrangement for giving variable signals from hand & finger movements.
The device or a number thereof are fastened to the fingers of a glove & therefore when the glove is worn and the fingers are bent a variable signal is received from the receiver of each device which can then be used for operations specific to the amount of bend for each device, for example : video games, robot commands, disabled persons controls, etc.
The device can also be used for a measurement of bending in any mechanism that has a moving joint or bending section.

    A cheap and reliable means of providing a variable analogue electrical output by applying pressure or bending forces to the body.
