Abstract
A sink assembly comprises a first basin (10), a second basin (12) and a third basin (14). Advantageously, the sink assembly is also provided with a splash guard (22) located between the second (12) and third basin (14) to prevent contamination of adjacent basins during hand washing. The present invention is particularly suitable for the catering and licensing trades since it provides facilities for washing and rinsing articles and hence meets the requirements that the relevant legislation imposes upon these trades. <IMAGE>
Description
Title: Washing Facilities
DESCRIPTION
This invention concerns washing facilities, particularly washing facilities for use by catering services and especially in connection with the licensing trade.
Food and hygiene legislation, specifically in the
United Kingdom in the Food Protection Act 1990 and the
Food Hygiene (General) Regulations of 1970, lays down certain requirements for washing facilities for the catering and licensing trades In particular the
Regulations require the provision of "suitable and sufficient wash hand basins" "which shall not be used for any purpose other than the personal cleanliness of the user". Owners of premises and tenants or licensees are equally responsible for compliance with the
Regulations.
Licensed premises commonly have a double sink unit (sometimes just a single sink unit) installed in the bar plus a glass washing machine. On the basis that one sink is reserved and used solely for hand washing such equipment meets the requirements of the
Regulations. However situations occur when the glass washing machine is not available for use.It may become temporarily inoperative or it may be removed by the licensee, as his/her personal property when management changes hands and the new licensee, for financial reasons, may delay acquisition of such equipment Apart from the rather unsatisfactory possibility of there being a separate hand wash basin elsewhere on the property the premises then operate in clear breach of the Regulations
An object of this invention is to provide in a single compact unit, which would be a fixture when installed, suitable washing facilities for the catering and licensing trades which would meet the legislative requirements for hand wash basins to be used solely for purposes of personal cleanliness.
According to the invention there is provided a washing facility suitable for the catering and licensing trades comprising
(1) a first basin suitable for washing
articles;
(2) a second basin suitable for rinsing articles; and
(3) a third basin suitable for hand
washing.
Preferably the facility should incorporate a splash guard between the second and third basins to prevent contamination of adjacent sinks during hand washing.
Water supply to the first basin will preferably comprise both hot and cold water supplies. Water supply to the second basin will preferably comprise hot water supply only. Water supply to the third basin will preferably comprise both hot and cold water supplies
In a preferred arrangement of the invention, the first basin is situated intermediate the second and third basin. Then hot water supply for the first and second basins may be common, say by means of a swivel tap and cold water supply for the first and third basins may also be common, again say by means of a swivel tap.
The third basin preferably has its own hot water supply
Preferahly the temperature of the hot water supply to the first and second basin is controllable other than by mixing with cold water. For example, a thermostatically controlled water heater may be included for supplying hot water.
Each basin will be provided with a waste outlet which may link up with the waste outlets from the other basins to form a single waste outlet for the facility as a whole. The basins and surrounding working surfaces are preferably formed of a material whose surface is relatively easy to keep clean. Stainless steel is believed to be a suitable material from which to form the basins either individually or as a single pressing.
Other materials may be suitable for the invention such as plastics material possibly reinforced with glassfibre. The third basin is preferably of a smaller size than the first and second basins.
The preferred arrangement of the present invention allows washing and rinsing of articles such as glasses, crockery and cutlery in the first and second basins, whilst personal washing can be carried out in the third basin free from contamination of or by the water in the first or second basin
The facility according to the invention could be of particular interest to breweries owning tenanted houses. Once installed there would be no risk or fear of the premises being in breach of the regulations regarding wash hand basins. It would give peace of mind similarly to licensees. It would be economical of space and at times when business was slack the equipment would allow all washing operations to be carried out both satisfactorily and legally without use of a glass washing machine.
The invention would be useful and appropriate not only for licensed premises but throughout the catering trade and throughout Europe as well as in the United
Kingdom. Market outlets could initially be small but if the invention became commercially available public health services dealing with a problem of inadequate equipment might be expected to press for its installation under provisions of the Food Protection
Act 1990 stipulating the general duty of care and due diligence.
This invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic diagram OI a washing facility according to the present invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, a washing facility suitable for the catering and/or licensing trade comprises a first basin 10, intermediate a second basin 12 and a third basin 14. The first basin 10 and the second basin 12 have a common hot water supply 16 for which the temperature of the water supplied may be thermostatically controlled. The hot water supply 16 is in the form of a swivel tap. The first basin 10 and the third basin 14 have a common cold water supply 18 in the form of a swivel tap. The third basin 14 has its own hot water supply 20. A splash guard 22 is located between the first and second basins.
The basin and surrounding work surfaces 24 are preferably pressed in one piece from stainless steel.
Each basin has conventional waste outlet and overflow.
The third basin 14 is smaller than the first or the second basin.
The first basin 10 is intended for washing articles, the second basin 12 for rinsing articles that have been washed in the first basin. The third basin 14 is intended for solely for hand washing so as to avoid contamination from or of wate:c in the other basins
