An extension (30) to extend the width and/or height of a channel section frame member for a security door or cover, comprises a channel section having a base (34) and opposite side walls (31, 35) with returned edges providing a narrower opening to the channel member than the width of the channel member and hook-like connecting means (32) projecting beyond one side wall and adapted for cooperating engagement with a returned edge (15/17) of said channel section frame member 1. <IMAGE>

Description

TITLE: Improvements in and relating to security covers for door or window openings DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to improvements in and relating to security covers for door or window openings.
In our co-pending European Patent Application No.
94300228.7 we describe how one or more extension pieces may be attached to a side frame member for a security door in order to increase the overall width of the frame to suit the opening into which it is to be fitted. We describe how the frame members and extension pieces are provided with mutually engagable formations on edges thereof, preferably so that the extension may be slid onto a formation of a side frame member or of another extension piece and at that time described how a dovetail formation was considered preferable for that purpose.
The advantage of using mutually engagable formation, especially ones permitting slidable engagement, is that it avoids the need for bolting exterior pieces in place. However the proposed dovetail formation increases the cost and the present invention proposes a simpler alternative.
Accordingly one aspect of the present invention provides a means of extending the width and/or height of a frame for a security closure, the frame comprising at least one channel section member with returned edges providing a narrower opening to the channel section member than the width of the channel section member, and wherein an extension piece has hook-like connecting means which are adapted for cooperating engagement with one of said returned edges.
The preferred channel section comprises a base and opposite side walls and the side walls are returned to define the opening. Conveniently the extension comprises a box or channel section member. Where the extension is a box section, it is conveniently relieved to receive the hook-like formations of another extension.
The hook-like connecting means may comprise a continuous longitudinally extending formation, but more conveniently comprises two or more longitudinally spaced hook-like formations.
Conveniently the extension comprises a channel section member comprising a base and opposite side walls with returned edges providing a narrower opening to the channel member than the width of the channel member.
With such a construction an extension can be fitted to an extension.
The hook-like connecting means project beyond one side wall. More conveniently still the hook-like formations are secured to at least one of said returned edges and preferably to both. The formations may be releasably secured, but are preferably secured fixedly, for example by welding.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided an extension for a frame for a security door or cover, the extension comprising a channel section member comprising a base and opposite side walls with returned edges providing a narrower opening to the channel member than the width of the channel member, and hook-like connecting means projecting beyond one side wall and adapted for cooperating engagement with a returned edge of said channel section frame member.
The frame for the security door is preferably a channel member as described hereinbefore.
In extending the width or height of the frame, the side wall of the extension is placed up to the side wall of the frame.
The afore-described channel section frame may be used for opposite upright sides of the frame for the security door and/or for horizontal top and/or bottom security door frame members. Thus wherever a channel with a returned edge is used the afore-described extension piece can be fitted to extend the width or height as the case may be.
The present invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a partially exploded perspective view of a frame for a security door and extensions therefor, and Figure 2 is a fragment from one embodiment of extension to an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawings, a frame 1 for a security door is constructed in the illustrated embodiment from channel section members forming the two sides and the top and bottom. The preferred section has a base and opposite side walls 11, 13 with returned edges 15, 17 providing a narrower opening than the width of the channel member. The frame receives a security closure, not illustrated in further detail.
The frame is secured using two clamps shown generally at 21 and each comprising an elongate member 23 apertured to receive threaded bars 25 having end plates 27. The end plates are rectangular and in one orientation can enter the opening in the channel member, and after rotation through 900 are held by the returned edges against pulling out. Usually the clamp mechanism is engaged with the top and bottom members. Thus the frame can be clamped to a door frame or structural opening in a wall.
However door openings are of non-uniform size and the invention proposes a simple way of extending the width and/or height of the frame by the addition of one or more extension pieces 30 as required.
The extension pieces comprise an elongate member and have hook-like formations 32 for cooperating engagement with the outermost returned edge of the frame channel member.
Preferably, a plurality of said hook-like formations are disposed at spaced locations along the length of the elongate extension member. Thus, the extension piece may be hooked onto the edge of either a horizontal or vertical channel section frame member.
Slidable engagement is envisaged.
A fragment of one preferred embodiment is illustrated in figure 2 and it will be seen that the extension is a channel section having a base 34, opposite side walls 31, 33 and returned edges 35, 37.
It will be seen that the hook-like formation 32 comprises a tab which extends beyond side wall 33 and has its free end 36 returned to form the hook-like end.
The distance is dimensioned to accommodate returned edge 15. The tab is welded to returned edges 33, 37 to thus increase the strength of the extension pieces.
It is convenient for the channel section of the extension to be the same as that or the frame since it could then, if necessary, receive the afore-described clamp mechanism or more particularly another extension piece. In practice this can be achieved by providing that the returned edge 35 is dimensioned similarly to the returned edge 15.
Cooperation of the extension piece with the frame by way of the hook precludes removal once the frame is clamped in position.

Claims (11)
