Abstract

Furniture, such as a wardrobe 10 having doors 12 and a base 14, is decorated by the provision of lines of routing 16 which may indicate various parts of a cartoon-like character, such as a dragon, with the decorative 3-D effect being enhanced by the provision of one or more add-ons, such as a head 18, which may overlie and extend above both of the doors 12. <IMAGE>

Description

Furniture Decoration The present invention relates generally to furniture decoration and is more especially but not exclusively concerned with a novel form of decoration for children's furniture such as wardrobes, beds and chests of drawers.
It is known for bedheads and the like to be painted with representations of animals or fantasy figures, and it is also known for wardrobe doors and the like to be carved with geometrical designs by way of ornamentation.
An aim of the present invention, however, is to provide furniture decoration which is not only visually attractive but has a 3-D effect capable of being massproduced cheaply and simply by industrial processes.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a method of decorating furniture comprises routing a desired outline in an otherwise generally planar workpiece, with another aspect of the present invention being the furniture decoration produced by said method.
The workpiece is preferably wood, such as 20mm deep pine, and the outline is preferably that of a cartoon-like character, such as a dragon or an elephant.
Advantageously: rough edges of the routing are not only smoothed but could be deliberately curved; one or more add-ons which may themselves be generally planar are fixed to the workpiece to enhance the 3-D effect; handles are attached to the workpiece yet form part of the decoration; and colouring is applied by hand and/or screen printing before lacquering.
A light colouring may allow the grain in the wood to be seen.
An example of furniture decoration according to the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.
The drawing is a front view of a wardrobe 10 having doors 12 and a base 14. Each of the doors 12 is formed with lines of routing 16 indicating various parts of a dragon, such as its body, wings, feet and tail. A head 18 in the form of a separate flat board is secured to the upper right-hand corner of the left-hand door 12 (which must therefore be opened first in use). Handles 20 are provided of complementary colour to painted spots 22.
It will be appreciated that add-ons other than the above-noted head 18 could be applied as appropriate, the add-ons typically representing physical features of a cartoon-like character, and optionally including their own routing 16.

Claims (14)

1. Furniture comprising a generally planar surface in which a desired outline has been routed to give a decorative 3-D effect.
2. Furniture according to claim 1, in which the desired outline is a pictorial representation.
3. Furniture according to claim 2, in which the pictorial representation is of a cartoon-like character.
4. Furniture according to any preceding claim, in which the decorative 3-D effect is enhanced by the application to the surface of one or more additional items.
5. Furniture according to claim 4, in which at least one of the additional items is a generally planar layer.
6. Furniture according to claim 4 or claim 5, in which at least one of the additional items extends beyond a margin of the surface.
7. Furniture according to any preceding claim, in which the desired outline extends beyond a margin of the surface by being routed into an adjacent surface.
8. Furniture according to claim 6 and claim 7, in which the or at least one of the additional items extending beyond the margin of the surface is arranged to overlie the adjacent surface.
9. Furniture according to claim 7 or claim 8, in which the surface and the adjacent surface are movable relatively to one another.
10. Furniture according to claim 9, in which the surface is a drawer and the adjacent surface is a frame.
11. Furniture according to claim 9, in which both the surface and the adjacent surface are doors.
12. Furniture according to claim 11, in which the desired outline extends across the major part of each of the doors.
13. Furniture according to any one of claims 9 to 12, in which one or more parts of the overall decoration is or are such as to allow use as one or more handles.
14. Furniture substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
