Description
ANGLING DEVICE
This invention relates to an angling device.
More particularly, it relates to an angling device suitable for use in float-controlled angling wherein it is desirable to weight a portion of a fishing line extending between a float and a baited fishing hook in order to control the accuracy of placement of the baited fishing hook within a body of water, such as a lake or a river, during casting of the line, and to control the rate at which the baited fishing hook descends in the water.
Fishing weights for this purpose are already well-known, and are available in a number of shapes, sizes and weights, dependent upon the desired end result required by the angler. In the past, these fishing weights were customarily manufactured from lead, and were known generically as "leads". Such leads ranged in size from relatively large leads used when ledgering down to small lead shot used to produce a gentle descent of 8 baited hook in the water. Nowadays, for environmental reasons, such fishing weights are being manufacturea rom tungsten metal rather than lead. Although tungsten fishing weights are more expensive than lead fishing weights, they do have the advantage of being smaller in volume, for a given weight, than the corresponding lead fishing weights, since tungsten metal is almost twice as dense as lead metal.
Specialised angling devices are also known, such as specialised floats, carp bombs, open-enaed feeders, blocked-end feeders, cage feeders and bait droppers, all of which incorporate a fishing weight in order t function successfully.
A bulk fishing weight manufactured from either lead or tungsten specifically for use in conjunction with a large-bodied fishing float, particularly in competitive angling, is known as an "olivette". Such olivettes are available in a variety of shapes and sizes for the purposes of speed fishing and the holding back or slowing down of the baited hook in the water during angling. The weights of these olivettes range from 0.4 gms (0.014 oz) to l0gms (0.353 oz), depending upon the desired performance required by the angler, but these known olivettes all have the disadvantage of being highly visible on the fishing line. This disdavantage can have marked effects during competitive speed fishing where there is a need to frequently and rapidly place a baited hook in proximity to fish within a fishing zone within the water without frightening those fish away from that fishing zone.
An angling device according to the present invention comprises a device constructed from one or more amorphous, substantially water-insoluble, substantially transparent materials, which device comprises or includes a transparent fishing weight manufactured from an amorphous, substantially water-insoluble, substantially transparent material having a density within the range of 1.24 g/cc to 3.6 g/cc.
Materials suitable for manufacturing an angling device according to the present invention include thermostting synthetic plastics materials such as phenol-foràldehyde resin 'densIty c. 1.537 g/cc); thermoplastic synthetic plastics material such as polymethyl methacrylate (density c. 1.249 g/cc, sold under the trade name of "Perspex"); a glass material such as potash-lime glass (density 2.4 g/cc), soda-lime glass (density 2.65 g/cc), crystal glass (density 2.9 - 3.6 g/cc), flint glass (density 3.3 -3.6 g/ccj, crown glass (density 1.5 - 1.56 g/cc), bottle glass (density 2.73 g/cc) and borosillcate glass (densIty 2.5 g/cc, sold under the trade name of "sirre'); and fused quartz (density 2.20 g/cc).
Preferably, an angling device according to the present invention comprises or includes a transparent fishing weight manufactured from a glass material.
Angling devices according to the present invention which comprise transparent fishing weights range in weight from 0.1 gm (0.0036 oz) to 55.0 gms (1.94 ozs), depending on the angling procedures utilising the devices.
One preferred embodiment of the present invention, in which the angling device comprises a transparent fishing weight, is an olivette manufactured from a glass material and having a weight falling within the range of 0.4 - 10.0 gms (0.014 - 0.353 oz). Such an olivette may be cylindrical, spherical or rhomboidal in shape, and is provided with attachment means for readily and securely attaching the olivette to a fishing line in any desired position between a float on the line and a hook on the line. The attachment means may be in the form of a tubular passage formed through the olivette, whereby the olivette may be threaded on to the fishing line, or it may be in the form of shaped protrusions and/or channels formed in the external surface of the olivette around which the fishing line can be wound and secured.
An olivette according to this preferred embodiment of the invention will be, for a given weight, larger in size than an olivette manufactured either from lead or from tungsten. Nevertheless, because such an olivette is manufactured from a transparent material, it has the marked advantage over the known olivettes of being virtually invisible when immersed in water.
Consequently, when an olivette according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention is used in competitive angling, such as speed fishing, there is very much less risk that an angler casting a line weighted with such an olivette into a fishing zone in the water will disturb or frighten any fish present within that fishing zone.
Other embodiments of the present invention, in which the angling devices comprise transparent fishing weights, can be all types and sizes of plummets, and all types and sizes of ledger weights, depending on the end usage of the devices by anglers.
Embodiments of the present invention in which the angling devices include transparent fishing weights comprise all types and sizes of stick floats, waggler floats and line controllers that contain integrated or removable casting weights; all types and sizes of feeders used in ledgering; and all types of bait droppers.
For example, a crystal-clear stick float according to one embodiment of the invention comprises a hollow elongated tube of a transparent synthetic plastics material such as polycarbonate, one end of which is provided with a highly visible end closure, and the other end of which is closed with a closure means which includes a transparent fishing weight according to the present invention. This transparent fishing weight, which can either be integral with the closure means or removable therefrom, has a size and shape such that the float, when immersed in water, floats in an upright position with the highly visible end closure thereof above the surface of the water, and with the transparent portion of the float, including the transparent fishing weight, below the surface of the water.
Another similar embodiment is a carp bomb having a bulbous hollow body portion formed from a transparent synthetic plastics material, one end of which is provided with a swivel line connection and a localised zone of highly visible coloured material, and the other end of which is provided with an integrated transparent fishing weight according to the present invention, which transparent fishing weight is provided with an integral line attachment means. Once again, the size and shape of this transparent fishing weight are chosen so as to ensure that the carp bomb floats upright in water with the highly visible zone above the surface of the water, and with the remaining, transparent portion of the carp bomb below the water surface.
An angling device according to another embodiment of the invention is an open-ended feeder used for dispensing ground bait into a chosen fishing zone.
It comprises a flexible, transparent tube of synthetic plastics material such as cellulosic plastics, which tube is open at each end and is perforated at regular intervals along the length thereof. One end of the tube is provided with an attachment means, whereby the feeder can be attached to a fishing line, and an elongated transparent fishing weight according to the present invention is fastened along the length of the tube to provide the necessary weight to maintain the feeder at a desired depth in the water. In use, the open-ended feeder is packed with ground bait and then cast into the water, wherein the ground bait gradually dispenses through the open ends of the tube and through the perforations therein. An alternative embodiment of the open-ended feeder according to the present invention is one in which the open-ended, perforated tube alse forms the function of the transparent fishing weight, being cast from a transparent material such as glass with a tube wall thickness sufficient to provide the desired weight to the feeder.
A similar angling device according to another embodiment of the invention is an blocked-end feeder used for dispensing maggots into a chosen fishing zone. It comprises a transparent, perforated tube of synthetic plastics material such as acrylic, which tube is closed at each end by a perforated transparent cap, one of which is removable to allow the feeder to be loaded with maggots. One end of the tube is provided with an attachment means, whereby the feeder can be attached to a fishing line, and an elongated transparent fishing weight according to the present invention is fastened along the length of the tube to provide the necessary weight to maintain the feeder at a desired depth in the water. In use, the blocked-end feeder is loaded with maggots and then cast into the water, wherein the maggots gradually dispense through the perforations in the feeder. An alternative embodiment of the blocked-end feeder according to the present Invention is one in which the perforated tube also forms the function of the transparent fishing weight, being cast from a transparent material such as glass with a tube wall thickness sufficient to provide the desired weight to the feeder.
An angling device according to a further embodiment of the present invention comprises a bait dropper designed te deposit a chosen bait into a fishing zone in a river or a lake when the bait dropper makes contact with the bed of the river or the lake. The bait dropper of this embodiment comprises a small, transparent perforated bowl, the open top of which is closed by a transparent cover which is attached at one point to the rim of the bowl by a pivotal connection to form a movable flap. The transparent cover iS retained in a closed pcsitio on the bowl by a releasable trigger mechanism.
This trigger mechanism comprises a transparent rod which extends diametrically across the bowl through diametrically-opposed apertures in the wall of the bowl, one of which apertures is adjacent the pivotal connection of the cover to the bowl. This transparent rod is slideably mounted in said diametrically-opposed apertures, and is provided at one end thereof with a hook-shaped latch raetnber which can be slid Into position over a portion of the cover which is dIametrically opposite to the pivotal connection, so as to hold the Cover in a closed position on the bowl. The transparent rod has a length approximating to about twice the diameter of the bowl, and extends beyond the pivotal connection to terminate, at the other end thereof, in a transparent fishing weight according to the present invention. The bowl is provided with an attachment means for a fishing line, which attachment means is located adjacent a point on the rim of the bowl which is diametrically opposite said pivotal connection. Consequently, when the bait dropper is attached to a fishing line, the bowl will hang from the line in a position in which the pivoted cover and the transparent rod are both vertical, and the latch member of the transparent rod holds the cover in the closed position under the load imposed thereon by the transparent fishing weight attached to the other end of the transparent rod.
In use, the bait dropper is first filled with an appropriate bait by disengaging the latch member from the cover and then raising the cover from the bowl to allow insertion of the bait into the bowl. The cover is then placed into the closed position on the bowl and the latch member is re-engaged over the cover. On casting the loaded bait dropper into a fishing zone in a river or a lake, the bait dropper sinks towards the bottom of the river or the lake under the influence of the transparent fishing weight on the other end of the trigger mechanism.
As the transparent fishing weight comes into contact with the bottom of the river or the lake, the resulting impact on the trigger mechanism causes the transparent rod to slide upwards relative to the bowl, thus disengaging the latch member from the cover. The cover then pivots to an open position to relaese the bait from the bowl.
Advantageously, the trigger mechanism, perforated bowl and cover of the bait dropper are all formed from a transparent synthetic plastics material such as polycarbonate, whilst the transparent fishing weight is formed from glass.
Angling devices according to the present invention are improvements over similar angling devices, in that those portions of the angling devices designed to be immersed in water during usage are all made from transparent materials. This ensures that those portions of the angling devices of the present invention, when immersed in water in a fishing zone, become effectively invisible to any fish within that fishing zone.
Consequently, an angler using such an angling device according to the present invention could materially improve the possibility that he could catch fish from such a fishing zone.
