Description

A FIXING STRUCTURE FOR A REAR FENDER OF A BICYCLE The present invention relates to a fixing structure for a rear fender (or mudguard) of a bicycle, and more particularly to a fixing structure which can easily angle-adjustably fasten the rear fender of the bicycle on a beam member thereof. The present invention also relates to fender assembly for a bicycle and to a method of assembly for the same.
A conventional fixing structure for a rear fender of a bicycle is composed of two fixing seats and a fixing projection extending from the rear fender. The two fixing seats are formed with corresponding semicircular recesses and through holes, whereby a thread rod is extended through the through holes to associate the two fixing seats. The associated fixing seats can be first secured on a seat stem of the bicycle and then the fixing projection is inserted into a hemispheric engaging recess of the fixing seat and secured thereon by a thread rod so as to fix the rear fender. The fixing projection and the engaging recess are formed with corresponding insert teeth and the angle of the rear fender can be adjusted. In addition, the fixing projection is formed with a shaft post and the engaging recess of the fixing seat is disposed with a central shaft hole, whereby the shaft post is pivotally fitted in the shaft hole with the engaging teeth thereof engaged with one another.
In the above structure, two fixing seats are necessary to fix the rear fender on the beam member of the bicycle. The two fixing seats must be first associated with each other and then secured on the beam member before fixing the rear fender thereon.
Such procedure is time-costing and cannot facilitate the adjustment of the angle of the rear fender.
The present invention provides a fixing structure which includes a fixing projection formed at an end of the rear fender, a fixing seat composed of a first and a second semicircular fixing members, and several pairs of C-shaped pad members with different thicknesses which enable the fixing seat to be fixed on different diameters of beam members of the bicycle. The fixing projection is formed with a lateral through hole and multiple radially arranged insert teeth. The first fixing member is formed with a rearward extending locking section formed with lateral and upper arch faces each of which is disposed with a through hole and radially arranged insert teeth. The fixing projection is suitable to fit with the arch face of the first fixing member with the insert teeth of the fixing projection engaged with the insert teeth of the first fixing member. A screw is extended through the through hole of the fixing projection and the through holes of the first fixing member to associate with a nut for fastening the fixing projection to the first fixing member and thus fixing the rear fender on various horizontal and vertical beam members of the bicycle. The angle of the rear fender is easily adjustable by means of loosening the screw and nut.
The present invention provides in a second aspect a fender assembly for a bicycle comprising: a fender which has a fixing projection, a first clamp member, a second clamp member, a hinge hingedly connecting the first and second clamp members, fastening means for fastening the first clamp member to the second clamp member which can prevent the first clamp member pivoting about the hinge relative to the second clamp member, and attachment means for attaching the fixing projection of the fender to the first clamp member, wherein the first and second clamp members in use are closed around a frame member of a bicycle and the fastening means engages the first and second clamp members with the frame member of the bicycle.
Preferably the attachment means allows the fender to be secured to the first clamp member at any one of a plurality of inclinations to the first clamp member.

Preferably the attachment allows the fender to be secured to the first clamp member at any one of a first plurality of inclinations which lie in a first plane and also allows the fender to be secured to the first member at any one of a second plurality of inclinations which lie in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.
Preferably the fender assembly comprises additionally a spacer member which in use is sandwiched between one of the first and second clamp members and the bicycle frame.
Preferably the first and second clamp members are each generally C-shaped and define when brought together a generally circular aperture and the spacer member is shaped to conform with the interior surface of one of the clamp members.
Preferably the fender assembly comprises a pair of spacer members each of which is sandwiched between one of the first and second clamp members and the bicycle frame.
Preferably the hinge comprises two pivot supports integral with the first clamp member, a pivot block integral with the second clamp member and a pin, the pin extending in use through both of the two pivot supports and the pivot block, the pivot block in use being located between the two pivot supports.
The present invention in a third aspect provides a fender assembly as described above comprising the steps of: pivotting the first and second clamp members together to surround the bicycle frame member, and fastening the first and second clamp members together using the fastening means, the method additionally comprising the following steps which are executed either before or after the above-mentioned steps: attachment of the fender to the first clamp member using the attachment means provided, adjustment of the fender to a desired angle of inclination.
Preferably the method comprises additionally the steps of selecting a suitably sized spacer member and inserting the suitably sized spacer member between one of the first and second clamp members and the bicycle frame member prior to completing the fastening of the two clamp members together.
