Abstract
A buffet plate or tray (1) has a first portion (3) adapted to receive food and a second rim portion (2) extending outwardly from the first portion. The rim (2) has an aperture (4) adapted to receive a glass or other container. The first portion (3) also includes a well (6) adapted to receive either food, e.g. a dip, or the base of a glass or other container. The buffet plate allows the plate of food and glass to be held in one hand. <IMAGE>
Description
Improvements in or relating to plates.
The present invention relates to a plate capable of supporting a container and suitable for supporting food thereon or therein and particularly relates to a plate suitable for supporting a stemmed or waisted drinking container, such as a glass.
At buffets, for example at business and social functions, people eat whilst standing. It is difficult and cumbersome to hold a plate and a glass whilst eating, smoking or holding a conversation in a crowded room. Normally, it is not possible to place the glass on top of the plate because of the presence of food and, even if this were possible, maintenance of the glass in on upright disposition is difficult and spillages of the contents of the glass could occur.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved plate for supporting food and a container, such as a glass.
According to the present invention there is provided a plate having a first portion adapted to receive food, and a second portion extending from said first portion and having an aperture adapted to receive such a glass or other container as has a first upper, in use, element of greater diameter than that of a second lower or intermediate, in use, element whereby the second element may be accommodated within the aperture and the first element may lodge on a rim of the aperture to support the glass or other container, wherein the first portion comprises a well means adapted to receive either food or the base of a glass or other container.
The aperture is preferably provided with a slot connected to an external face of the second portion.
The second portion may be formed in a different plane from an upper surface of the first portion.
The plate may comprise a ceramic material, a plastics material, paper or cardboard.
The plate may be circular, rectangular, or oval.
An embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompany drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view taken along the line A-A of Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view taken along the line B-B of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a plate 1, which may be made of china, plastics material, paper or cardboard, has a rim 2 and a base portion 3.
Within the base portion 3, there is provided a well 6. This may be formed integrally with the base portion and indeed the plate as a whole. The purpose of the well 6 is twofold. It may serve to accommodate a liquid or semi-liquid foodstuff, such as a dip.
If not used for the above purpose, it may serve to help anchor a glass or other container. The dimensions of the well 6 are minor compared to the overall dimensions of the plate but may be sufficient to help anchor a straight sided glass which may be used at buffet style functions.
The rim 2 also forms a second portion extending from the first base portion 3 is provided with a slot and aperture 4, the aperture being substantially circular.
In use, the stem of a stemmed glass or the waist of a waisted glass can be positioned in the recess 4 so that the body of the glass abuts and is supported by that part of the second portion 2 in the region of the recess 4. Because the rim 2 slopes upwardly relative to the base portion 3, the glass tends not to fall from the recess, and food on the base portion 3 is maintained by virtue of the generally dished configuration of the plate, having the first base portion 3 surrounded by the upwardly sloping second portion.
The well 6 is preferably located, as shown in the Figures, at an end of the base portion 3 remote from the glass holdIng aperture 4. However, other locations are possible.
The base portion 3 may be embossed or printed with a desired insignia on its upper surface.
The sides of the well 6 may be parallel or sloped.
Claims (11)
1. A plate having a first portion adapted to receive food, and a second portion extending
from said first portion and having an aperture adapted to receive such a glass or other
container as has a first upper, in use, element of greater diameter than that of a
second lower or intermediate, in use, element whereby the second element may be
accommodated within the aperture and the first element may lodge on a rim of the
aperture to support the glass or other container, wherein the first portion comprises
a well means adapted to receive food or the base of a glass or other container.
2. A plate as claimed in claim 1, wherein the aperture is provided with a slot connected
to an external face of the second portion.
3. A plate as claimed in either claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the second portion is forked in a different plane from an upper surface of the first portion.
